    Amazon.com Review

Computers you notice. They sit on your desk and hum, ever smaller, ever faster, and always obsolete if bought longer ago than last week. But the equally impressive technology that turns millions of terminals into a global network is less obvious. The phone line that comes into your house probably still pushes electrons through metal. But not far away, the signal will join millions of others relayed down fiber optic cables by laser. Jeff Hecht's fascinating account of this undersung technology goes back 150 years to find the origins of fiber optics. Then he chronicles the many ingenious and determined engineers who fashioned it into a technology that festoons the globe with cables carrying pulses of photons. It was harder than pioneering copper links because supplanting an existing technology needs more persuasion than establishing the first one. And there was competition from the satellite industry, as well as unexpected setbacks, such as sharks who ignored copper but chewed fiber optic cables. Hecht tells a good tale, combining a light journalistic touch with a scholarly knowledge of the industry he has covered for over two decades. The story is not over yet, but this is a rich account of how we got this far in a technology that really has fueled a revolution. --Jon Turney, Amazon.co.uk

    From Publishers Weekly

The first underwater telegraph cable was laid between England and the Continent in 1850, with the cable from America to Europe following in 1858. But for the next century, improvements in transcontinental communication came slowly. By the 1940s, Americans could talk to Europeans via a static-plagued radiophone. By the early 1980s, satellite transmissions had improved conversation clarity significantly, but callers were still annoyed by delay and feedback. Those who have made a transcontinental call recently, however, know that the wonders of fiber optics have made it possible to hear a pin drop on the Champs-Elysees. In this deft history, Hecht, a writer for the British weekly New Scientist, shows how the illuminated fountains that thrilled crowds at the great 19th-century exhibitions convinced scientists that light can be guided along narrow tubes. In our century, scientists used these tubes of light first to look inside the human body and then, as the physics of wave transmission were better understood, to transmit audio and optical information. Hecht explains which technological advances have made fiber optics the backbone of our telephone system in the last 10-15 years and how everyday applications should increase exponentially once fibers are connected directly to our homes. Already optical fibers are used in many surprising ways: guiding laser light in life-saving surgery; embedded in concrete to monitor stress in bridges; wound into gyroscopes to improve airline safety. Hecht's latter chapters are bogged down slightly with details that will mainly interest readers working in related areas, but general science buffs should enjoy his account of the development of the technology that will change our lives in many unexpected ways in the next quarter century. I worked on R&D of fiber optic communication system and device since 1976. Thus, I worked for period as same as the latter 1/3 of this book. I attended OFC from 1999 to 2013 and felt the bubble's up and down by myself. I found several (or more) familiar names with whom I worked and who wrote papers I read again and again. Many technologies are described in the book, but also many people who devoted their time and efforts for fiber optics are introduced. Good book to summarize my own R&D experience in the technical field.

Just like the title says, it is a story/history of optical fibers narrated like a thriller with suspense! It is well detailed and I learnt a lot about science/scientist (and beliefs) by reading this book. Nothing is impossible at the end.

Well written, fascinating and surprising history.

    love it!

This is the book which I always recommend to anyone wanting to learn the rich story behind optical fibre communication. Those of us who helped develop the technology tell differing stories, usually ones with much greater emphasis on the significance of our own research communities. Jeff managed to interview all the key players and then wove their different stories into a single exciting tale. This is not a text book, it is an adventure. The more recent history is not included, but don't let that put you off. Recent history is always distorted in the telling. If you are interested in more information about the UK lab where pioneer and Nobel Laureate Charles Kao began the fibre story, see [...]

Fiber optics, the backbone of local and international communications and of the Internet, seems like a new technology, but in this comprehensive history of the field Jeff Hecht describes the Victorian origins of light guiding via jets of water. In the first half of the 20th century a number of researchers independently discovered flexible glass fibers, and with the introduction of the laser in the 1950s long-distance optical communication became a possibility. The main section of the book focuses on the work of researchers in Britain, Japan, and the United States from the 1950s through the 1980s as they overcome many technical problems and develop the beginnings of modern fiber optic cables, documenting the failures, the dead-ends, and the ultimate success in the early 1980s. Extensively researched and annotated, with much material from primary sources, City of Light is accessible to the non-technical reader, yet has enough detail and links to additional sources to satisfy students of engineering history.

This is book has a wealth of information on the early years of fibre optics that I have not seen anywhere else. It is full of names and brief explanations of their contribution. But overall I thought this was a dull, slow moving book with little insight. More of an ongoing collection of notes that have been put together for another better book on the history of fibre once the real story finally emerges. There is very little science here. You won't learn much about light physics or why the technology works -only that it does and who patented it. (But the science may be reserved for Hecht's other book.) Also , for those who are trying to keep up with Gilder this book will be disappointing. There is nothing on DWDM (one brief, unexplained mention) or nothing that maps out the current players, companies, or technologies. (I can tell that Gilder has read it because some of the historical facts have been mentioned in the GTR) But there are only a few pages at the end that try to update where the technology has been in the last 10 years, where it is going or why. Huge gaps where a technology is mentioned but not even defined, much less explained. I wish there was a better book on the subject, but for now this is it, and maybe it is worth reading for that reason alone. Sorry to be so critical, but if you like Burke's "Connections" this will only get you lost. It probably would not have been published but for the sudden surge in tech stocks. I hope the Slone series is not all like this.

The author has an easy narrative style, even though clarity is obstructed by poetic wax in a few places.I am amazed out how much information about fiber optics I have absorbed without study. If you like techie stuff, you'll love this book. If you like Dilbert, you'll love this book.Read it!

    Review

"An immensely thought-provoking book. In his sophisticated reconsideration of late-medieval European characterizations of sub-Saharan Africans, Herman L. Bennett troubles the traditional account of the rise of the West."—David Wheat, Michigan State University"African Kings and Black Slaves centers the histories of peoples of African descent in the grand tale of imperial conquest and power and thereby challenges the dominant narrative that colonial slavery has timelessly been about freedom. Herman Bennett is especially sensitive to the multisited nature of the contests set in motion by colonial encounters."—Antoinette Burton, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign"Herman L. Bennett's indispensable study alerts us to the political and intellectual consequences of flattening the history of Europe's relations with Africa by overlooking the Iberian experience. He ably shows how recuperating the notion of African sovereignty, abundantly recognized in early exchanges, can fundamentally change our understanding of African polities and African subjects."—Barbara Fuchs, University of California, Los Angeles

    Review

“Magisterial...Kelly brings the horror vividly and importantly back to life.” ―USA Today“A moving account of the famine...Kelly has produced a powerful indictment of the British mind-set in the nineteenth century, and of the British policy that resulted from it.” ―The New York Times Book Review“An accessible, engrossing history of horror...Cogent and forceful.” ―The Washington Post“An engrossing narrative of the famine, vividly detailing Victorian society and the historical phenomena (natural and man-made) that converged to form the disaster.” ―The Economist“Though the story of the potato famine has been told before, it's never been as thoroughly reported or as hauntingly told.” ―New York Post“John Kelly gives heartbreaking detail to the Great Famine that seared itself into the memory of the Irish people, and sheds fascinating new light on the policy decisions that made it even worse. The Graves Are Walking is a cautionary tale for all who would risk calamity--human, economic, or ecological--in the name of scoring an ideological victory.” ―President Bill Clinton“This fine book is sourced largely from contemporaneous accounts and is thoroughly documented. It is a witheringly bleak portrayal, extraordinarily detailed and gracefully written. Everyone who holds a policy-making position in government today or tomorrow should study this book.” ―The Washington Independent Review of Books“Kelly intersperses the nitty gritty of the shifting Irish economic situation with horrific glimpses of its human toll.” ―Laura Miller, Salon“In humanising the complexities of the Great Famine, John Kelly's emotional history of the time makes for a compelling and heartbreaking read...Kelly doesn't shy away from the kind of vivid descriptions and heightened language more often associated with poetry than historical writing.” ―The Irish Times“An incredibly well-researched analysis of the Great Famine...The book reads like a novel, making the reality of this particular bit of history all the more haunting.” ―Shelf Awareness“Mr. Kelly's moving, powerfully narrated account of the tragedy and its aftermath brings it alive in all its horror.” ―The Washington Times“An upsetting, enlightening, necessary book that deserves multiple, durable audiences [and] stands as a testament to the resilience of a people under some of the greatest duress the world has ever seen.” ―History News Network“This is a wonderful book about a terrible event. It's also a rare combination of compelling writing, excellent scholarship, and insightful analysis that ranges over the full scope of--and goes beyond--the potato famine itself, from agricultural science, through the English politics that contributed so much to the death toll, to the impact of Irish immigration in America. A truly outstanding book.” ―John M. Barry, author of The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history and Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul: Church, State, and the Birth of Liberty“Kelly (The Great Mortality) traces a path of misery and devastation as he documents one of the 19th century's worst disasters, a nightmarish six years that left twice as many dead as the American Civil War...[Kelly's] exhaustive research covers every aspect, threading the gruesome events into a huge panoramic tapestry that reveals political greed lurking behind the pestilence.” ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)“The Graves Are Walking is compelling reading. Once again John Kelly illuminates a dark time, removing it from the shadows of legend and hearsay into the bright light of history. Even among the graves of Irish famine, he finds vivid life.” ―Richard Rhodes, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb and John James Audubon: The Making of an American“John Kelly is one of America's great historians and storytellers. He has a new one out now: the essential The Graves Are Walking. It's a brilliantly rendered account of the Great Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. The prose sizzles with deep intelligence, hard research, and an inspiring compassion for the millions who died of hunger. It was an honor to read such first-rate nonfiction. Highly recommended!” ―Douglas Brinkley, author of The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America and The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast“I wish more people wrote history like this: fast-paced but carefully documented, lively as a novel but tackling, head on, one of the great human catastrophes of nineteenth-century Europe. Kelly's portrait of a tragedy rooted in a superpower's imperial arrogance has echoes for the world we are still living in today.” ―Adam Hochschild, author of the New York Times bestseller To End All Wars“The Graves Are Walking is an engrossing chronicle of an historic tragedy that forever changed Ireland, Britain, and America. Kelly conveys the rawness of Irish suffering with a powerful intimacy--an entire nation reduced to a single wish: survival.” ―Amanda Foreman, author of the acclaimed A World on Fire: an Epic History of Two Nations Divided and the international bestseller Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire“John Kelly vividly writes the compelling story of the horror of Ireland's potato famine, with intimate portraits of those who died and those who fled. Most illuminating is how he captures, in devastating detail, British leaders, who, imbued with religious fervor and ideological blinders, decided to use the plague as an occasion to teach the Irish good work habits, responsibility, and to rid them of their dependence on government. An extraordinary book, and a lesson for our times.” ―Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, founder of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, and author of Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches Mixed God with Politics and Lost Their Way“Kelly deftly conveys the enormity of what was at stake. The Graves Are Walking seeks accountability for those responsible for the human toll from a shortage of everything–even coffins.” ―Booklist“Kelly's work is written with the verve of a good novel... his powerfully argued conclusion is that the British were guilty of neglect rather than malice, allowing religion and ideology to overrule their common humanity. ...At the height of the famine, a British official received a report of the latest casualties and scribbled a single word underneath: why? This book provides as good an answer as we are likely to get.” ―Daily Business Post (Dublin, Ireland)

I had not read a book on the Famine since I read Cecil Woodham-Smith's "The Great Hunger" 20 years or so ago. While that was considered definitive in its era, it is good to see a more modern telling of this horrible tragedy available for the 21st century. This book is exceptionally vivid and haunting, to the point where I wondered how did the majority of Irish people survive the Famine? Kelly has definitely chosen to write a memorable story, rather than a classic historical tome, and he succeeds in that aim. It is quite horrific. That might scare some people off but it is wonderful to see 75 reviews and 11 formats and editions, so clearly not too many people are turned off by the grimness of the tale, which the title fairly conveys.Notwithstanding the authorial preference for vivid and graphic accounts, there does seem to be solid historical research behind the book. The author does not devote a great deal of the book to analyzing the famine, but does make clear that in his view the English were largely responsible for the severity of its impact on Ireland. They exercised dominion over Ireland politically, economically and militarily, but when the famine hit, they hypocritically framed it as a local problem, as if the Irish were a different nation. As others have brought out over the centuries, many leaders in England also took the Rahm Emanuel approach ("Never let a crisis go to waste") to the Famine, seizing it as an opportunity to impose radical changes in agricultural habits that they believed would improve productivity of Irish agriculture in the long run -- tragically turning a blind eye toward the short-run humanitarian disaster the reforms engendered. And Kelly also points up the bureaucratic ineptitude and paralysis that hampered famine relief even when the English were moved to humanitarian efforts.Overall, a powerful account of what, as far as I can see, was the greatest peacetime humanitarian disaster in the Western world in the last 400 years.

John Kelly has written a very readable book about a very traumatic time in Ireland’s history. What makes Kelly’s book good is because he looks at all the factors that led to the years of starvation at the end of the 1840s. Of course no book on the famine would be complete without addressing the United Kingdom’s central role in setting the local policies and social structure that exacerbated many of the factors that caused the famine and increased the suffering. From the UK leaderships’ philosophies on government and their opinions of the Irish, to mismanagement, to incompetence, to an inability to understand the extent of the problem, and to deliberate action and inaction that led to more starvation than would have been otherwise, Kelly addresses all these issues. At the same time Kelly examines the issues of the effects of bad weather, not just in Ireland but across Western Europe, which had the effect of reducing crop yields in other countries thereby increasing the demand for food around the world. This lead to increased demand and pressure on existing grain sources of all types, which, given the potato blight that affected all of Europe, caused nations to turn to alternative foods. Of course, Kelly also examines the potato blight and the fact that Ireland virtually, although not totally, relied on a single crop, the potato, and when the crop was destroyed year in and year out, the major source of food for Ireland disappeared. Naturally there was an international trade in food, but even that last grain crops in America had disappeared and there were periodic shortages of available shipping. At the same time, the distribution system within Ireland was archaic with many parts of the country virtually unreachable. Railroads had only been developed in the previous decade and had not yet become the major way to move goods overland they would later become. This meant the nation relied on poor roads that were greatly affected by the weather. As long as enough food could be produced locally, that wasn’t really a problem, but when the potato failed for several years, the lack of infrastructure made it difficult if not impossible to supply some towns. And, again, underlying all of these integrated problems was poor British policy. The government failed to understand, or deliberately ignored the extent of the problem. This meant they failed to follow through on successful policies, usually because they didn’t want to fund them, or they refused to implement solutions at all. This was because of philosophical beliefs on government, or racist beliefs about the Irish as a people. While the government as a whole may not have pursued ethnic cleansing as a policy, certainly the effect of their policies was to cause Ireland to lose one million dead and two million to flee the country, causing Ireland to lose approximately one-third of its population. What makes this book is that Kelly examines all these issues and paints a more complex picture of the famine years. All these issues came together in an almost perfect storm of suffering.

So many factors contributed to the Irish potato famine in the 1840s. Weather, geography, government, religion, and the class system all played a role in making a terrible situation worse. In The Graves Are Walking, we get a brief overview of Irish history before the 1840’s and how the landed gentry played a role in exacerbating a horrible situation. This is the first book I’ve read on the Irish potato famine, so I have nothing to compare it to. Because I know little of Irish history, I learned a lot, and its made me excited to learn more about Ireland and her people. The weak sentence structure and inconsistent time line detracted from my otherwise enjoyment of the book, hence the 3.5 stars.

As a History student whose focus is on how changes in relgion, politics, and culture under Tudor kingship/queenship has impacted the modernization of Ireland, I found this book quite interesting. Kelly provides relevant, interesting detail such as excerpts from newspaper stories and direct quotes from individuals living in Ireland during the famine. Although I disagree with his argument that the famine was not genocide, I believe that the author presents a fairly objective insight to Ireland during the great hunger in a manner that allows the reader or scholar to form their own opinion on the matter. More importantly, I found that Kelly presented the information in a manner that introduces those with little understanding of the famine to the topic, but the book also provides intricate details for those who are more familiar with this short period of Irish History.I initially came across this book when it was assigned as a reading for one of my courses a few years ago and will be incorporating it into my thesis research.

I followed earlier editions of this book through various incarnations of Windows. Its main problem used to be timeliness: by the time the book was finally published, some content would be rendered obsolescent by a new version of Windows. Now it's in two volumes. (The second volume is vaporware, ostensibly scheduled for publication in April 2019).Don't look here for details about basic OS mechanisms such as spinlocks or pushlocks. Microsoft Press cleverly relegated those things to Volume Two (which hasn't even been published). That would be understandable if Volume One were filled entirely with important information about *other* basic mechanisms. It isn't. Dozens of pages are dedicated to the spewage of systems tables, whether or not all the data have special relevance to the reader [illustration: Chapter 6, p.522]. I rather wish they had put that stuff in an Appendix to Volume Two.Since this is the *only* current official guide to Windows internals, I have to give it three stars. But I don't have to like it.

A must have for anyone who troubleshoots in a Windows-based environment on a daily basis. Couldn't ask for a better reference.

I was very excited to have received this book. The timing of the book was so perfect as it is up to date with the latest windows 10 build. I checked my new computer and it matched exactly. The book opens up chapter 1 with an overview of what is to come and then goes into the details chapter by chapter. I have received the earlier editions of this book and was surprised to note that this one is a much easier read. It is extremely well written and introduces a number of tools that allow you to experiment and actually follow along with the information presented. A number of references were made to volume 2 of this book but unfortunately volume 2 has not yet been published. I can't wait until I can preorder this book.I purchased both the hard copy and the electronic versions of this book. What I truly enjoyed about the kindle edition is that it comes with highlighted reference links that allow you to click to the reference and then click to go back to where you left off reading. I am and IT specialist and my company will soon be moving to windows 10 OS; this book has given me a much more thorough understanding of how things work. The book provides an expert view of the foundation upon which all windows applications are built. I very thankful to the Authors for all the time and effort they put into this book to make it comprehensible to a layman like myself.

A good book in a series of great books. None can compare to the first edition that gave us the backstory of Windows NT, but this book is a great resource. I can not wait until the second part is made public.

    highly recommended

    Excellent internal OS information.

    A wealth of knowledge.

Grear info. A good knowledge source.

Crochet Patterns For Babies (2nd Edition): 41 Adorable Patterns For Baby Hats, Blankets, & Clothes!Pictures that are clickable don't match up to what they should be.Cute and usable ideas, car seat blanket, hats for infants with ears.Very easy instructions and list of materials needed.Very confusing as there are lots of ads and other things the author wants you to sign up for, in the middle of the patterns.

The patterns in this book are so cute! There are options for basically everything you could think of. I really liked the pattern for the little bear ears. If you love to crochet and you've got a baby coming to winter, this book is a really great tool to make some nice winter things easily. And they're small so you don't have to worry about a huge time commitment to see a finished product.

I found my new hobby, why not? I purchased this Crochet Pattern for Babies wanting to do something unique for my girls which they can keep until they grow up, and it also is made by their mother. The patterns and instructions are simple to follow, as a first timer in crochet making, I made my first Hat Flower. Thanks Kitty Moore for coming up with this brilliant book, I am sure a lot of mothers will like this book too.

A very nice book that presents a collection of items appropriate for newborns and anyone who likes to crochet. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow.I have a seven-month-old baby and I plan to try some of the ideas.

While I have no interest in crocheting myself, my fiance does and my boss just had a new baby girl. The patterns in this book turned out incredibly cute in skilled hands and the clothes are just adorable. My boss and his wife were very pleased. My fiance is excited to use some of the designs when we have our own children. She has also taken some of the items inside and used the patterns to create other items around the house.I'm sure she will be referring to this again and again.

I’ve been thinking on what to do this summer with my son. So I’ve been searching the right book for our new hobby together. Then I found this book which is totally unique, stylish, useable and affordable stuffs for our child. We’ll my son won’t like doing crochet but he will like the result for sure! This is not just ideal for your own child but we can make one as gift. Really nice work!

Cute patterns, with easy-to-follow instructions. I found this book well-written and useful. Highly recommended for new moms and grandmoms everywhere.

I love this book. This book has easy to follow direction, examples and pictures that will help you to complete your crochet project. I usually do adult scarfs and hats but I wanted to try something different and this was just the book to make my change. I would recommend this book to anyone because the patterns are easy to follow. Thanks!

I'm a guy and I am just now getting into crocheting after reading a couple of Kindle books on the subject. I know the basics of this art but have yet to make anything that actually resembles a piece of clothing for instance. Fortunately all the women in my life crochet, so I know where to turn for help. I picked a pattern which is included in this book called Baby Sweater With Hood and I've gotten the materials and about to start the step by step direction which seem pretty thorough. My only decision since this will be for one of my grand babies who have yet to arrive on the planet is should I use the pink or the blue yarn?
