I've read several books on the war. I spent two years in Germany during the 1970s, with help from the U.S. Army. And this is one of the few books that truly brought out the sights, the feelings, the smells of what the 92nd dealt with. For me, the hardest part was the arrival at Dachau. I could visualize every bit of it, as I had been there almost 35 years to the day that Sacco and his troops arrived. I could see the wall around the camp, the river that ran through it, I remembered walking across the bridge, and seeing the ovens. I cried like a child that day and after reading the descriptions here, the tears returned again.I am thankful that Jack Sacco did such an amazing account of his father's tour into hell, and I pray we may never again relive such horror on this earth.Blessings to Joe Sacco and the rest of the 92 Sig. And to every other hero who was part of WWII. This peacetime soldier honors each and every one.

I visited Dachau in 1986. I was astounded by the silence of the place, no insect, animal or bird life. This book tells about some of the men who landed on Omaha Beach, fault the Battle of the Bulge, followed General Patton, liberated Dachaau, held onto their humanity and returned to the United States to their homes and families. I didn't want to put it down. I was sorry when I finished it. I wanted there to be a sequel, Joe's life after his return to Alabama. I highly recommend this book.

This was a book I just could not put down. I am not a lover of books about war, but this one grabbed my attention and would not let me go until the very end. It is an exceptionally well written book that is easy to read. It is written from the heart as though the author had been there himself, even though it was his father's experiences he was telling about. I recommend this book to any mature adult.

Jack Sacco brilliantly tells the story of his father, Joe Sacco, through his father’s eyes. “Where the Birds Never Sing” reads like a novel. It flows easily and expresses emotions in a manner that makes it perhaps the finest war journal I’ve ever read. It also made me feel guilty for not having written my father’s World War II memoirs. My father proudly served in the Navy in the South Pacific during the war. Like Jack Sacco, I feel a great deal of pride in my dad’s service.Thank you, Jack Sacco, for sharing your father’s story. It is a truly inspirational account!

A few years ago I had the honor to sit in the living room of Gen. Felix Sparks and spoke to him of the war (his story is the subject of the book The Liberator: One World War II Soldier's 500-Day Odyssey from the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau by Alex Kershew - awesome book). Felix was the commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry from the 45th Division, the first combat unit to enter Dachau, and he experienced it all. His story about the event was shocking. I had to buy this book to learn what another GI experienced and how it compared. Their stories of horror and sick rage match up exactly.Felix said that nothing in his life, from being almost killed at Salerno to becoming a Justice on the Colorado Supreme Court, approached the impact of Dachau. He spoke of it because the story had to be told and not because of his role. Are these guys part of The Greatest Generation? You bet your ass!

I am reminded again, of this greatest generation, as I read this book and watched the events surrounding the funeral of a hero of a later war, Senator John McCain.Readers of this book may know a lot of the information written about being drafted, basic training, shipping out and D Day. Sections describing the fight across Europe into Germany and especially Dachau were especially good. Having visited Dachau in 1966 I remember the smells, Sacco describes, are still there, as is the crematorium, barracks etc. actual photographs may be found throughout the book. Also included is a story of romance.Highly recommend for those interested in WWII.

This book, written by Jack Sacco, follows his years as he is enlisted in the 92nd Signal Battalion during World War II. His friendships and training acquired during basic and following him through Europe detail that coming of age during a horrific War.For any who are history Buffs, or for so many of our younger generation who have not had the opportunity to speak with someone who served during World War II, this is a glimpse into the horror as well as the tedium of army life. While the liberation of Dachau is a major point in the book, it is the relationships between family, his lovely Monique, and his brothers in arms that carry the book. I felt as if I would be able to go up to any of them and talk to them personally about their lives, expressing my appreciation for the sacrifices they made. This book was difficult to put down. I wanted to know what happened next. Even knowing that he must have lived through the war in order to be able to write about it, I felt myself tense up at times and concern for Jack. These people are part of the greatest generation of our country and should never be forgotten.

I have read dozens of these types of memoirs and this is the best told one that I have encountered. A vivid depiction of an Army signalman from training in the US, embarkation to England, and the battles from Normandy to final victory. Highlights include his interactions with Patton, loss of close friends, and his depiction of entering Auschwitz. Highly recommend this book to any interested in this genre.

    Review

Praise for A People's History of the United States: "Zinn has written a brilliant and moving history of the American people from the point of view of those who have been exploited...the book is an excellent antidote to establishment history....While the book is precise enough to please specialists, it should satisfy any adult reader."--Library Journal"In many years of searching, we have not found one history book we would recommend to them--until [the] just published "A Young People's History of the United States." This is the edition of A People's History that we have all been waiting for."--Deborah Menkart, executive director, Teaching for Change"Zinn's work exemplifies an approach to history that is radical, regardless of its subject or geographical location. He tells us the untold story, the story of the world's poor, the world's workers, the world's homeless, the world's oppressed, the people who don't really qualify as real people in official histories. About the Author

The visionary historical work of professor and activist HOWARD ZINN (1922–2010) is widely considered one of the most important and influential of our era. After his experience as a bombardier in World War II, Zinn became convinced that there could no longer be such a thing as a “just war,” because the vast majority of victims in modern warfare are, increasingly, innocent civilians. In his books, including A People’s History of the United States, its companion volumeVoices of a People’s History of the United States, and countless other titles, Zinn affirms the power of the people to influence the course of events.REBECCA STEFOFF is the author of more than 100 nonfiction books for children and young adults, and she has adapted several best-selling history books for younger readers.

#12,399 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

As this book explains at the beginning, most history books, especially textbooks, look at history from the point of view of power – kings and presidents, scientists and writers and other noteworthy names. Therefore, much of this history is about the struggle over power – wars, coups, electioneering and other means of transferring power, whether peacefully or violently. Most of these books make claims to “objectivity” without acknowledging that in fact, they are all, of necessity, biased. Writing history is a matter of what gets written and what gets left out. Who gets to tell the story and who is silenced.Howard Zinn’s THE PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, on the other hand, has no pretensions about “objectivity. Zinn states up front that he is writing the history we don’t learn in school or read in the newspapers. He is telling the history of the people who have been affected by power and the struggle for power. In the Friedman/Thatcher/Reagan vision of “trickle-down economics”, Zinn is concerned about those getting trickled on and, more importantly, what those people have done and are doing about it. The original, adult version of this book is over seven hundred pages long. Zinn, along with co-writer Rebecca Stefoff, wanted to bring a more accessible version of the book to younger audiences, hence, THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, which is roughly two-thirds as long with significantly less writing per page. The young people’s version pretty much follows the adult version of the book, starting with debunking the myth of Columbus and continuing until about the date of publication, including information on the September 11 attacks, the war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq. The book ends with the Democratic resurgence at the midterm elections during Bush 43’s second term. Although Zinn makes it repeatedly clear that he doesn’t have significantly more love for the Democrats than the Republicans, he did seem to view this as a positive sign that Americans had had enough of abuses of executive power, foreign wars and empire building and federal overreach at home. Sadly, he lived just long enough to probably realize his hopes may have been overly optimistic.Of necessity, the young people’s version is significantly less detailed and more simplistic than the adult version, which can be a bit of a drawback as it exacerbates accusations of bias and inaccuracy. As noted, Zinn never pretends to be un-biased, but the simplification in this book does away with a degree of nuance that seems to lead to a number of statements that have been simplified to the point of generalization, and generalizations almost always carry a degree of inaccuracy. As simplified as this book is, I don’t recommend it for high school students (most of whom can handle the adult version). This book would be good for late elementary and middle school kids with adult guidance. I would like to see this book used in conjunction with a supposedly “objective” text book and maybe even an explicitly right-wing focused book. It would be a slow process, but a worthwhile exercise to have students comb through equivalent chapters and look for information among the texts that is outright contradictory versus information that is simply a matter of perspective. For instance, the view of Columbus as a “great” explorer who “discovered” America isn’t necessarily incompatible with the view of him as a conqueror and slave master of the Indians – it’s just a matter of whether you look at it from a European or an Indian point of view. Students should pay attention in each text to see whose voices are included and whose are not.But other sections, such as the Civil War, may present contradictory information among the texts. For instance, was the Civil War fought over slavery or not? Who was the aggressor? In these cases, students should be helped to find primary sources which may support one position or another. In this way, students will begin to understand how we know what we know about history and to understand the limits of objective “truth” in history, which really makes up a large chunk of what studying history is really all about, rather than simply memorizing names and dates. One of the biggest drawbacks to both this version and the adult version of this book is the lack of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography or other references. Some sources are mentioned in the text itself and there are many quotes from ordinary people’s letters to the editor or elected officials or interviews with the media. But without adequate information to trace those sources for one’s self, the book suffers a small loss of credibility, even for those who support Zinn’s message and perspective. Students especially need to understand where historical information comes from and that, while it may represent an interpretation, the information underlying that interpretation comes from actual historical events as documented in many different sources.Everyone, from the most flaming radicals to the staunchest conservatives, should read Zinn’s work simply for the neglected viewpoints he offers. If his information is wrong, then it should be easy enough to dispute it, debate it and determine the truth of the matter. But no one, child or adult, is going to be “indoctrinated” simply by hearing an alternate viewpoint or different interpretation. And, while Zinn’s viewpoint is definitely quite harsh on the power structure that has frequently led America in a bad direction, the book is not itself anti-American. In fact, the book is quite optimistic in the idea that ordinary people, standing up for what they believe in, have the power to change history and thereby correct the mistakes of our imperialistic, racist, classist past to create a more equitable and just future as enshrined in our founding documents.

Using this as the foundation of my homeschool curriculum for my daughter who is in 3rd-4th grade history. We supplement with other Zinn resources like the Zinn Ed Project website and the DVD The PEOPLE SPEAK and the audio stories. Love all of these resources.

This is a great introduction to the work of Howard Zinn for youth. I do think that in some ways it is almost too truncated, but that is because we are using it as a resource in our homeschooling history studies. I am supplementing with other resources, and we like it as a jumping off point for more investigation, research, and discussion.

Great read! It has changed my perception of the US government, military and our society. The book discusses important insight of American history that wasn't taught in high school.

Having read the grown-up version of this book, I read this on a flight using my Kindle. It is very readable, and true to the original, though geared to a younger audience. Zinn should be required reading in all history and social science programs.

I got this book for my daughter as required reading assignment. I don’t know what’s going on with this brainwashing of kids by liberal teachers but I told my daughter to just get an F and I explained the opinion views in this book isn’t history. What a waste of money.

Excellent read for your high school or college age child! All adults will appreciate the book.

A great view of the history of the United States - an alternative to the usual view.

It's a great book. I never thought Steve would ever have a pet. Great Job Steve! You're a real good writer.

I really liked this books story line. Also I would probably recommend this book to Minecraft fans or someone who needs something to pass the time. And I gave this book four stars because it’s story line was good and so was the writing format, though I think maybe if the writing style changed a bit it would sound more professional. But really as amazing book.

Number 5 features Steve going to visit the witch trying to fix Cindy's zombification. It ends on a real cliffhanger with a promise for more exciting adventures!

Awesome book. Humorous and fun. Like the series, too much high juju night juju juju Quinn juju juju juju juju juju juju juju

The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution, by Walter Isaacson

    Review

“[A] sweeping and surprisingly tenderhearted history of the digital age . . . absorbing and valuable, and Isaacson’s outsize narrative talents are on full display. Few authors are more adept at translating technical jargon into graceful prose, or at illustrating how hubris and greed can cause geniuses to lose their way. . . . The book evinces a genuine affection for its subjects that makes it tough to resist . . . his book is thus most memorable not for its intricate accounts of astounding breakthroughs and the business dramas that followed, but rather for the quieter moments in which we realize that most primal drive for innovators is a need to feel childlike joy.” (New York Times Book Review)“The Innovators . . . is riveting, propulsive and at times deeply moving. . . . One of Isaacson’s jealousy-provoking gifts is his ability to translate complicated science into English—those who have read his biographies of Einstein and Steve Jobs understand that Isaacson is a kind of walking Rosetta Stone of physics and computer programming. . . . The Innovators is one of the most organically optimistic books I think I've ever read. It is a stirring reminder of what Americans are capable of doing when they think big, risk failure, and work together.”   (Jeffrey Goldberg The Atlantic)“A sprawling companion to his best-selling Steve Jobs . . . this kaleidoscopic narrative serves to explain the stepwise development of 10 core innovations of the digital age — from mathematical logic to transistors, video games and the Web — as well as to illustrate the exemplary traits of their makers. . . . Isaacson unequivocally demonstrates the power of collaborative labor and the interplay between companies and their broader ecosystems. . . . The Innovators is the most accessible and comprehensive history of its kind. (The Washington Post)“Walter Isaacson has written an inspiring book about genius, this time explaining how creativity and success come from collaboration. The Innovators is a fascinating history of the digital revolution, including the critical but often forgotten role women played from the beginning. It offers truly valuable lessons in how to work together to achieve great results.” (Sheryl Sandberg)“Isaacson provides a sweeping and scintillating narrative of the inventors, engineers and entrepreneurs who have given the world computers and the Internet. . . . a near-perfect marriage of author and subject . . . an informative and accessible account of the translation of computers, programming, transistors, micro-processors, the Internet, software, PCs, the World Wide Web and search engines from idea into reality. . . . [a] masterful book.” (San Francisco Chronicle)“A panoramic history of technological revolution . . . a sweeping, thrilling tale. . . . Throughout his action-packed story, Isaacson . . . offers vivid portraits—many based on firsthand interviews—[and] weaves prodigious research and deftly crafted anecdotes into a vigorous, gripping narrative about the visionaries whose imaginations and zeal continue to transform our lives.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)“A remarkable overview of the history of computers from the man who brought us biographies of Steve Jobs, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, and Henry Kissinger . . . Isaacson manages to bring together the entire universe of computing, from the first digitized loom to the web, presented in a very accessible manner that often reads like a thriller.” (Booklist (starred review))“Anyone who uses a computer in any of its contemporary shapes or who has an interest in modern history will enjoy this book.” (Library Journal (starred review))“The history of the computer as told through this fascinating book is not the story of great leaps forward but rather one of halting progress. Journalist and Aspen Institute CEO Isaacson (Steve Jobs) presents an episodic survey of advances in computing and the people who made them, from 19th-century digital prophet Ada Lovelace to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. . . . Isaacson’s absorbing study shows that technological progress is a team sport, and that there’s no I in computer.” (Publishers Weekly)“Isaacson succeeds in telling an accessible tale tailored to a general interest audience. He avoids the overhyped quicksand that swallows many technology writers as they miscast tiny incremental advances as ‘revolutionary.’ Instead Isaacson focuses on the evolutionary nature of progress. The Innovators succeeds in large part because Isaacson repeatedly shows how these visionaries, through design or dumb luck, were able to build and improve on the accomplishments of previous generations.” (Miami Herald)

Seemed like a stroll down memory lane. Brought back my introduction to the Apple II and Mac at the Consumer Electronic Shows when I was in the consumer audio end of the business. Fondly recalled my learning computers on the "luggable" Osborne, teaching myself BASIC programming and learning to use the early word processors, graphics and spreadsheet programs then proceeding to the early Prodigy program and modems that let me choose between 300 bit transmission or step up to 1200 for a much higher price. I recalled the development of the world wide web, the explosion of AOL and other milestones.Loved the description of the creative process, especially comments like "testing that hazy borderline between persistence and cluelessness", "key to fielding a great team is pairing visionaries, who can generate ideas, with operating managers who can execute them. Visions without execution are hallucinations.""People who love the arts and sciences should endeavor to appreciate the beauties of math and physics, just as Ada [Lovelace] did. Otherwise, they will be left as bystanders at the intersection of arts and science, where most digital-age creativity will occur."Well written, well researched and a bit controversial at times as it tracks some of the "losers" who are part of the history of the digital revolution. Definitely a worthy read!

The good news: an epic sweep through computing history connecting the dots as Isaacson's sees them. Even if you're not a technical history fan than this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century. The bad news: this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century. It is at best technically wrong, misses some of the key threads in computing history and starts with a premise (that innovation comes from collaboration) and attempts to write history to fit.The difference between and a reporter and a historian is that one does a superficial run-through of a rolodex of contacts and the other tries to find the truth. Unfortunately Isaacson's background as reporter for Time and CNN makes this "history" feel like he was comfortable going through his Rolodex of "Silicon Valley" sources connecting interviews, and calling it history.I'm sure Isaacson would claim, "more details get in the way of a good story," however that is exactly the difference between a throwaway story on CNN and a well written history. The same epic sweep could have embraced and acknowledged the other threads that Isaacson discarded. The gold standard for a technical history is Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb."(Other reviewers have pointed out pointed several critical missing parts of computing history. I'll add one more. While perpetuating the "Intel invented the microprocessor" story makes great business press copy it's simply wrong. Intel commercialized something they knew someone else had already done. Lee Boysel at Four Phase invented the first microprocessor. If Isaacson had done his homework he would have found out that Bob Noyce was on the Four Phase board, knew about the chip and encouraged Intel to commercialize the concept.)Finally, one of the "facts" in this book that differentiate reporting from history is the garbled bio of Donald Davies, one of the key inventors of Packet Switching. Davies is described as "during the war he worked at Birmingham University creating alloys for nuclear weapons tubes..." I started laughing when I read that sentence. It's clear Isaacson had no idea what Davies did in WWII. He obviously found a description of Davies' war work, didn't understand it and re-edited it into something accidently amusing - and revealing. What Davies had actually done during the war is worked on the British nuclear weapons program - codenamed "TubeAlloys".Understanding the distinction is the difference between a reporter and a historian.

As an introduction to the ethos and personalities who created the modern digital revolution era, The Innovators is a success. Even though extremely light on the actual science and engineering of computers (there isn't a single line of code) and necessarily brief about the major personalities of its one hundred fifty year odd history, the book does convey a good sense of the similarities among the luminaries of computing.Isaacson, always interested in what makes some people truly significant and others merely dreamers or money makers, focuses on the need for sensitivity to the ability of computers to complement, instead of replace, human intelligence. He also observes that the major figures in computing were able to blend insights from the humanities and sciences and tended to work in close collaboration with others. The myth of the lonely creative genius turns out, at least in computing, to be mostly a myth. The book travels rather well trodden ground and is not a book for those who want an understanding of the development of computer science. But if you are interested in sketches--almost universally positive as is Isaacson's style--of the major figures in computing along with a simple explanation as to why they're important, this book is a good purchase.Isaacson's prose is easy to read--I read the whole book in less than day--which means that the book is not only a worthy exercise in lifetime learning but a pleasurable experience as well. I would have preferred more technical descriptions of computer science but I work in data analytics so my opinion may not accord with the majority of readers.Somewhat simplistic, too universally positive but still an interesting survey of the major figures in computing. Not life changing but I can think of worse ways to spend nine hours than reading a work with as interesting a subject and as polished prose as this book.

    Amazon.com Review

One of the beautiful things about comics is that it is possibly the best medium for combining education and entertainment. No one knows this better than Larry Gonick, whose Cartoon History series spans many subjects. Whether you are a fan of history, comics, or Gonick's books, The Cartoon History of the Universe I is a great place to start. Part I contains volumes 1 to 7, from the Big Bang to Alexander the Great.

    From Publishers Weekly

Gonick's hilariously informative history of the planet is a great addition to the growing field of comics trade books. Starting with the Big Bang theory and moving on to the "evolution of everything," he manages to cover three billion years--from the origins of cellular life to the fossil and dinosaur periods that followed, right up to the first appearance of hominids--all with casual erudition, silly humor and delightfully cartoony black-and-white drawings. But Gonick doesn't stop there. He reinstates the record of women (their theoretical role in the development of agriculture and the matrilineal clans of the neolithic era) as well as accurately restoring black racial characteristics to the Egyptian dynasties. He also surveys other highly evolved ancient civilizations: the Sumerians, the Hittites, the Assyrians and the Israelites. Gonick cheerfully conjures rulers, warriors and slaves alike, many stumbling around in the desert, as they form the foundations for Western civilization. This is Gonick's first book. I have the print version of cartoon history of the Universe Volumes 1-7. I have read some of the Gonick cartoon books and give them 5 stars. As I am having difficulty seeing up close now, I get books on Kindle and have it go to my computer so that I can expand the print and see the text better. I ordered volumes 1-7 with that intent. I found that I could expand the text with other books from Amazon; however, when I tried to expand the text with the Gonick book, the icons that allow for expansion were greyed out - suggesting that the Kindle version is not text - but simply a photograph of the page and that is not expandable. The print was too small for me to read, so I returned the "book". When I returned the book I was asked why I returned the book and was given several options - no of which applied - so I checked other. I looked for a box so that I could explain in detail why I returned the book - but I did not see any way to do this.

I had originally bought this book for use in my waiting room. However, some of the sexual humor and the irreverant approach to religious figures meant that it was a "stay at home" book. (Don't tell the IRS)Now that the book is in its proper place, I should add that I enjoyed it immensely and went on to buy Volumes 2 and 3. (not on my office account though)The book starts with evolution of the earth and its creatures. The pictures were well done and the humor makes the factual material easier to remember. The bulk of the book deals with the history of the human race. The author does not confine himself to European civilization. Two of my children read all three volumes, and I did not have to hassle them to do it. How often does this happen with other history texts? I am hoping to use their interest in some of the historical topics to encourage them to read other books. Each section of the Cartoon History contains a reference section for those who desire further reading.Ideally this book should be a companion to serious textbooks on history. However, there are a lot of people who are unwilling and unable to absorb material from textbooks or lectures. People who are visual learners may be able to remember the pictures and the humor when they have trouble remembering college lecutres or long passages of text. I have recommended this and some other of the author's books to individuals who were having trouble with basic college classes.

I read this book when I was in elementary school and loved it. I was fascinated and it gave me a much wider perspective on history and the repeating patterns throughout history than school provided. My son started reading my original copies in 3rd grade and also loves them. He's on the second (red) book now.The author doesn't sugar-coat history. At least I hope not because then history was more violent and petty than it already was. There are a couple of pages I suspect my late 1980's parents would have been uncomfortable with me reading when I was a kid. I grew up OK though, so I didn't worry about my son reading them on his own.

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in such a delightful way, as the great philosopher Mary Poppins once said. Mr. Gonick knows how to teach serious material in a fun and easily understood way. All of his academic graphic novels are worth reading if you deal with the subject at hand. I'm a substitute teacher and use them to get some grounding in various subjects. The regular teachers are often familiar with his book on their subject, and respect it - some of their teachers used them. History of course is the most entertaining subject, worth reading for fun. The fact that this one goes all the way back to the Big Bang and explains how the Universe and the Earth were formed makes it even better.

I got this to make history more interesting for my son. It wasn't really useful for school because they didn't go that far back in history.Still it is really engaging and humorous, maybe even when what was happening wasn't funny at all.

I love this book, I have all three in the series, and can't wait for more. It's the best history teaching book I have read, it should be in every high school classroom! Yes, there are parts that young kids shouldnt read (the parts with the greeks and boys, but it actually happened, so dont blame the author, he keeps it pretty PG). A lot of history has stuck in that I wouldn't remember otherwise. The only reason that this didn't get 5 stars is that in the last chapter, the art style changes dramatically, for the worse, in my oponion. But thats just a small nitpick, and otherwise, its a great, great book.

I highly recommend this book. It's well written, it's occasionally funny and very readable. Volumes 1 to 7 starts with the Big Bang, to the evolution, to the first great civilizations (Sumer, Egypt and the Greeks), and ends with Alexander the Great reaching India.I was so impressed about the presentation that I thought - why isn't there an animated version of this book (and the other volumes)? Wouldn't it be nice for kids to be able to get their history lessons via Cartoon Network? But then I reached the part about what early Greek women did with their goats and sheep and how the Spartans treated young boys and I thought "well, maybe it's better if it stays in book form".My only gripe is the lack of an index. Certainly handy when important names and places are regularly mentioned (like any other history book) .

Another stellar volume by Larry Gonick. If your kid absorbs this, she will know more than 99% of well read adults in this country.

Small Boats and Daring Men: Maritime Raiding, Irregular Warfare, and the Early American Navy (Campaigns and Commanders Series)

    Review

“Armstrong provides readers with an innovative history of a form of naval strategy often neglected by historians and strategists who focus on big fleets and guerre de course. His pioneering scholarship here is not just interesting naval history but enters into the realm of naval theory and strategy.”—John T. Kuehn, author of America’s First General Staff  “Armstrong takes the reader on an action-packed journey from the War for Independence to the decades immediately following the War of 1812. In retelling little-known stories of raids, ambushes, and explosive devices, he recasts the U.S. Navy’s early history. Small Boats and Daring Men brings irregular operations to the forefront of naval history.”—Kevin D. McCranie, author of Utmost Gallantry: The U.S. and Royal Navies at Sea in the War of 1812“In this provocative study, Benjamin Armstrong employs the concept of guerre de razzia in order to highlight the prevalence of American raiding operations during the Age of Sail.  Through carefully chosen studies, he shows how U.S. Navy forces frequently employed what he calls “naval irregular warfare” to pursue national goals.”  —Craig L. Symonds, Ernest J. King Professor, U.S. Naval War College and author of A Concise History of the U.S. Navy
