Review:Phil Jackson has proven with his previous books that he is as skilled a writer as he is a basketball coach, and he shows it again with "Eleven Rings." This book is mostly a recap of his coaching stints with both the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. He talks about what he had to do to take these teams that were loaded with talent and make them blend together into a cohesive team in order to win all those championships. There are some aspects of leadership that books about business leadership use. However, Jackson will put a unique spin on how he might use this model, so that it becomes clear that he is not doing this from a manual, but instead putting his own perspective and methods into the work he does with his teams. One of these is that he often refers to his teams as a "tribe" and each member of the tribe will know what his role is in order for the goals to be achieved. What I liked best about Jackson's sharing of his coaching secrets was how he treated different individuals differently. He realized that one method will not work for everyone, and because his teams had so many superstars with egos to match their talent, he worked on each individual in methods to which the certain player would most respond positively.Jackson described how he did this with his superstar players on each team - Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman on the Bulls, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal on the Lakers. I thought the best example of this was how Jackson handled a situation with Pippen during the 1994 playoffs, when the Bulls were playing without Jordan who had gone into his first retirement.Pippen was supposed to inbound a pass to Toni Kukoc for a last second shot in a playoff game against the New York Knicks. Pippen was not happy to have this role for the play and refused to leave the bench after a time out. Jackson made a quick substitution for Pippen. Kukoc made the shot, the Bulls won the game, and the coaching staff decided on what to do about Pippen. After one assistant coach told Pippen it was a bad move (in much saltier language), the team said the Lord's Prayer, Pippen apologized to his teammates with tears in his eyes, and everyone got a turn to state how they felt. That doesn't sound like much when a team leader says no to the coach in such a crucial time, but because Jackson knew that this type of action would affect Pippen greater than a fine or suspension, that is what Jackson did.It is stories like this, the manner in which Jackson treats his player and most importantly, how he articulates this in the book is why I believe this is a book that would be enjoyed by readers of all types, whether or not they are sports fans. The personal stories in this book are refreshing, not judgmental, and a source of great information on some of the biggest names in basketball history. Excellent book.Did I skim?NoDid I learn something new?Yes. While I did know of some of the more well-publicized events of Jackson's teams, such as how he handled Scottie Pippen's meltdown in the 1994 playoffs or when the Lakers didn't immediately offer him new contracts, the manner in which Jackson handled these situations was telling. These passages delved much deeper than what was told in the media. The best of these was how he handled Scottie Pippen's situation, which is detailed in the review.Pace of the book:Very good. It moved along nicely and stayed in chronological order, which is something I appreciate.Positives:The manner in which Jackson describes how he handled many of his players, especially his best players such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal was the strength of this book. I also liked that it stuck mostly with basketball-related issues. Jackson certainly did talk about literature, spiritual life and other such topics, but instead of full chapters devoted to these topics, he mentioned them as they related to his teams and/or coaching.Negatives:At times, I found Jackson to come across as condescending toward other teams, players and coaches that may not have achieved the same level of success as he has achieved. That has been a consistent characteristic mentioned by Jackson's distracters over the years, and it seems to show in this book. Not enough to be blatant or libelous but it does appear nonetheless. I also found a few typos and spelling errors, especially of some opponents' names.Do I recommend?Yes, especially for basketball fans. However, I think that fans of other sports and even some readers who may not be sports fans, but want to see how successful leaders build teams would like this book.

As a mom who spent 12+ years watching my daughter play volleyball, basketball, and throw discus/shot put, I have seen my share of coaching styles. Some were awesome, some should have been fired, one was fired. Throughout it all, I always knew it could be more humane and motivating without the degrading, intimidating, and negative approach many coaches used. I always loved watching Phil Jackson coach the Bulls and read some about his coaching style at the time. But his book has great information that can be applied to any job, including parenting. Clearly, championships can be won while coaching a team respectfully and influencing them not just as a player, but as a human being. Every coach, teacher, camp counselor, parent would learn from this book. All athletes/children of those who do, will benefit greatly. I bought it for my Kindle, but just bought it in hardback too, as I want to highlight some parts and get all the book referrals he includes.

I've been a leader all my life but I've never made a study of leadership. 11 Rings is my first foray into becoming a student of leadership. What a wonderful read!If I were reading this as a paperback or hardback, it'd be totally dog-eared. Instead, almost every chapter is about 50% highlighted. It was thrilling to relive experiences that I'd watched as a fan of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. But, I was most intrigued by the intricacies of motivating and unifying such outsized personalities. My kindle edition is FILLED with ideas that I can implement in my own work as a pastor.I highly recommend this book. It's a compelling read. It's fascinating to relive moments you've lived through as a fan of the game. But it's equally as compelling for the practical ways that it reveals for working with, supporting and getting the best from a variety of different personalities that show up in every organization.

Let me start by saying I am a huge basketball fan and hate the Lakers with every fiber of my being (I'm a Sixers fan). That said, this book gave me a lot more respect for Phil, Kobe and some other Lakers. I'll get my only downside of the book out of the way quickly, Phil Jackson makes a lot of excuses for his losses, but his wins are always the work of him or his team. For instance, whenever talking about something other than a championship win, he's blaming the ref's or saying a team won, though through now spectacular play of their own. I can't blame him too much because I'd imagine you have to be pretty ridiculously competitive in that profession, which will make it very difficult to admit when you're bested. The reason I titled the review what I did, was because this isn't just purely basketball, and it's not even just 50/50 basketball/spiritualism. It's got basketball, it's got spiritualism, it's got philosophy, and more. I was never big on the zen or meditation stuff, and still am not, but he makes a lot of it sound a lot more practical and helpful than I've read/heard before. It takes you behind the scenes for mostly all of his championship teams, and early on when he played for the Knicks and ends after his last year as the coach of the Lakers. You get his thoughts on the similarities and differences between Jordan and Kobe, some of the reasons behind the Kobe/Shaq feud, and what brought the teams of individuals together to be a championship caliber team. If you love the sport, you'll love this book.

Great book to read, Phil talks about each championship season in detail from beginning to end. Gives you a different perspective on what it takes to win a championship in the sports world. Also talks about some of his secrets to staying focused. If you are a basketball fan you will enjoy reading this book. Phil also includes a lot of information on how Michael Jordan, Shaq and Kobe use to practice and how he matured after each season. You will find some grammatical errors but nothing that should take you away from the enjoyment of the book.

Little substance beyond picking the right team and watching out for the sharks. Could have been summarized in a two or three page article.

What a disappointment. I don't know how this got such a good rating on amazon. The author goes through very brief descriptions of subjects, with little explanation of the concepts therein. Half of the book is about cyber security, which has little to do with the process of an IPO. Thirdly, there are many grammatical and spelling errors throughout the book, which only leads to it's lack of credibility. I'm very sorry I bought this book. Don't make the same mistake!

Horrendous. Looks like he wrote it in MS Word on a plane ride. Complete waste of money.

I was not expecting software engineerring strategies.

    Avoid.

    Absolute trash.

    Good read

A perfect carpentry book for any girl or boy. My kids, who are now in their late twenties and early thirties, loved this book. It was their most checked-out library book and we made many of the projects. Now that I have a 5-year-old grandson and a three-year-old granddaughter I looked for a copy for them and was thrilled to find one in pristine condition. My grandson received this for his 5th birthday along with a tool box with real tools from Harbor Freight and a gift card for Home Depot. He loves to look at the projects and is planning to make the raft this summer (with Daddy's help). He also has made the dolly cradle for his sister. All instructions are easy to follow and cover several pages so each step is broken down into easy parts. The book is divided into levels of projects so you can help a child choose a small faster project or a larger week-long project. Materials lists and tool lists are included. The projects are shown being built by three boys and one girl with tons of photos. It's delightful to think that these young children are now all adults with kids of their own probably building projects still. Excellent book and I am very pleased with it.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using this book to make projects with my kids. My knowledge of using tools was pretty much limited to being able to hammer a nail into the wall to hang a picture. Actually building something seemed very complicated and reserved for people who were not me. My attitude has completely changed now thanks to this book. The instructions are described in a clear simple way; the tools needed, how to use the tools, everything is outlined for the reader. My children understood everything they were doing. I understood everything I was supervising them doing! "Carpentry for Children" has brought a love for carpentry into my family, given us many fond memories and helped us build fun projects!

Super fun maker book. So important for kids to get hands-on real world experience. Both my son (5th grade) and my daughter (3rd) grade built something and are very proud

Nice book. I would guess it was written in the 1970's from the wording and the pictures. The kids at our school got a lot out of it, but made fun of the haircuts and closes the kids wore. Gave good basic info on wood working.

I really like that I can just put this book out on the tool bench and let my kids go for it, it is so easy to understand and the projects are fun and and absolute must for every boy/ or girl from the age of 8.

This book offers projects for a range of skill levels, from simple toys on up through a lemonade stand cut from a whole sheet of plywood. Different projects suit different levels of skill and strength - cutting some of those pieces with a hand saw will take a while. There's a lot to like here. It starts with an introduction to basic hand tools, including short lessons on using each one. The list includes a brace and bit, the classic hand drill (not the egg-beater kind). I agree completely with this 1985 book in recommending that to a kid but, since this book came out, it verges on extinction as cordless drills encroach on its former habitat. This book distinguishes itself in offering kids larger-scale projects than other books, starting with the very first: the workbench on which the rest will be made. Perhaps the floating toys represent the range best. A little wooden tugboat, suitable as a bathtub toy, lies at the small end of the scale. At the other end, a real raft (holds one or two kids) requires several five-foot logs, eight inches in diameter. Other projects, including a few with girl appeal, lie between those extremes.Walker makes sure there's fun in the finished work, too, not just in the making. An easel, a puppet theater, and a gravity race car all promise years of fun (and maybe a few good healthy bruises). Although the scale of some projects might be a bit much for smaller carpenters and living spaces, the range offers something for many skill levels, and offers the beginner a lot to look forward to. Not every project will work for every kid, but it looks like a lot of fun.-- wiredweird

Great diagrams and instructions for the kids to experiment with something new.

This is a quite unremarkable, moderately entertaining work of fiction set in late 19th century England. As with another of Follett's works, A Place Called Freedom, it has little to recommend it over dozens of other similar novels set in the period. The plot revolves around the Pilasters, a wealthy and contentious banking family, whose various branches struggle for control of the family business. Subplots involving a fictitious South American country and members of the British "underclass" bring some spice into the history. However, as with A Place Called Freedom, the most striking aspect of the novel is its utter predictability. Twists in the story become strikingly obvious scores of pages in advance.I would rate this novel slightly above the aforementioned A Place Called Freedom, but both pale in comparison to Follett's two novels Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Readers familiar with those works will likely be disappointed with this effort.

This is such a good book that I consider it a jewel. In short, it is spellbinding.

I didn't want it to end. At the end you feel like you really know them. Loved it. This is a novel worth reading every word. Although a majority of the readers could never humanly understand the pain suffered in the story due to lack of real-life experience, the words do speak true to everyday human feelings of belonging, pain, triumph, suffering, and so on, but most importantly, LOVE. We've all experienced love in all its ways which is why everyone can and will relate. You will, laugh, cry, judge...you will feel anger, hatred and fear but most importantly, you will feel how a breaking heart can HEAL.I highlighted so many good quotes. This little novel deserves all the hype and awards it's gotten. The author has written an astonishingly beautiful and compelling narrative. My only complaint came that I felt it was a little too short, especially at the end. I'm also certain this book will be made into a great movie. Absolute must read!

I bought this book on a whim but once started i knew I would finish it. Good character development with enough personal flaws to make it realistic.

It’s difficult to review Edna Ferber’s Giant because the book and the movie are so intertwined in my mind. Having seen Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean in the key roles numerous times, those faces were the only ones I could attach to the characters as I read the book. I also had a difficult time, being a lifelong Texan, with the geographic setting. In the film, the ranch is obviously far West Texas; the book doesn’t specify but leads one to believe that the ranch is somewhere near the Gulf of Mexico, placing it near Houston—yet Houston seems to be hours away. Ferber’s town names often are invented, particularly the town of Holgado, which seems to be a large metropolis of mid-twentieth century Texas. This sort of thing is typical of authors, but the film is so firmly rooted in Texas geography that I felt a bit uncomfortable, trying to fit the place names into the Texas I know. That being said, the novel and Ferber were far ahead of their time regarding race relations and women’s place in society. Ferber had proven in her novel Show Boat back in the 1920s that she was a progressive woman as far as race relations go. She carries this theme much farther in Giant. Again, I had though the race theme and even the women’s theme was an invention or embellishment of the film makers. But they are straight out of Ferber’s book. She is adamant that her female protagonist Leslie Benedict have a say in how she chooses to live her life, and Ferber also is quite clear that Texans of the time in which the book is set—the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and early 50s—have a wrong-sighted attitude about their citizens of Mexican descent. It has been said that Texan readers at the time were incensed by Ferber’s depiction of them, for she paints my fellow Texans as vain, arrogant, sometimes ignorant, and above all, racist. But, knowing now what we know, her portrayal is fairly accurate, albeit a bit satirical. And finally, the prize-winning author’s writing style: previously, I had only read Show Boat, her novel written in the 1920s. With Giant, fifty years later, Ferber’s writing style is quite unconventional. She uses run-on sentences liberally and is continually stringing together lists of words with no commas. This, at first, unsettled me, and I wondered why she was allowed by her editor to get away with this. But soon I realized, at least in my eyes, she was trying to convey the idea that Texans of that era did not live by rules. That their lives were totally unconstrained and their attitudes matched those rules of life. Giant is a remarkable book and quite a good tale.

One of the smartest fiction books I've ever read; brilliant plotting and intricate details that come together at the end.

There are books and there are classics. Edna Ferber was a classic author with this one and although she participated in seeing it to the film starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean, her better work was in the book itself... but then, there my imagination got to play with and truly see, feel what this story was all about. The Rancher from a long line of Ranchers, The Debutante from Back East City Life, and The Dreamer of Big Things, Lacking Means to Reach Them. A story of love. Love for the Land. Love for Another. Love of Wealth. A story of Sacrifice. Sacrifice personal for professional success. Sacrifice of comforts well known, for devotion and love. Sacrifice of pride to overcome poverty, adversity. A story of loyalty. Loyalty to the past, present, and future. A story of Journeys and Generations. It was a grand film, but as in most cases of books to films, the book is simply better. Ferber gets a ball rolling, the story itself sweeps one up and carries one away... And while I don't think one can read it in 3 1/2 hours (the length of the feature film, give or take), it is an adventure in an industrious time where no one would, could stop an American Dream, as it would seem today, some (particularly politicians and evil terrorists) are want to do.

Characters are well developed, easy to remember relationships. I hate to have to turn back for the family tree. Unpredictable exits of characters to the story line as the plot takes a different direction. I enjoy the author’s writing very much and have read many of his novels. If you like Ken Follett’s formal this won’t disappoint

    From School Library Journal

Grades 6-10--This title focuses on the warrior class of Japan from their rise during the Heian Period (794-1185) to their decline in the 1860s. The author does an excellent job of describing their lives and country during this period. She examines Japanese history, culture, beliefs and society, and the legacy of the samurai. Highlighted, boxed articles add detail. There are numerous quality color photos of current times and reproductions of old masterpieces, all with informative captions. Although most unfamiliar words are explained contextually, there is a three-page glossary. This appealing presentation provides detail and artwork not found in older books on the topic.Nancy A. From Booklist

Reviewed with Kathryn Hinds' Venice and Its Merchant Empire.Gr. 5-8. From the Cultures of the Past series, these handsome volumes offer good, balanced overviews of distinctive cultures. Hinds traces the history of Venice from Roman times through the establishment of the republic and empire to its decline as a political power. The heart of the book is the depiction of Venice during the Renaissance: its economic base, social structure, religion, architecture, music, and art. Clearly written, the discussion wisely does not presume prior knowledge of subjects, such as the beliefs of Catholics. Japan introduces the ideals, practices, history, arts, spiritual life, and lasting influence of the samurai warriors. Schomp offers a well-organized overview of the subject as well as interesting sidebars on topics such as famous samurai women, the traditional tea ceremony, and kamikaze pilots. Both books are greatly enhanced by many richly colored and beautifully reproduced works of art and by photographs of artifacts and historical sites. Each book ends with a time line, a glossary, and lists of books and Web sites. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This was a perfect edition to our Ancient Civilization section on Japan. Not only to did it add much needed information that the text book was lacking, it further elucidated on more recent times like: Japan’s involvement in World War II, honoring traditions, and modern educational/business practices and beliefs. A wonderful addition to any junior/high school library or classroom.

So I’m glad I read this book, but let me explain what you get.Excellent history. Ewalt clearly did impeccable research, interviewing a lot of people, and all the big names of D&D are in here. He begins his tale long before D&D and even Chainmail, so it’s very thorough.Unfortunately he spends too much of the book retelling his own exploits as a player in campaigns, and anecdotes. This is fine if you genuinely have no experience or knowledge of how a roleplaying game works, but for those diehards among us, this gets old very fast and I ended up skipping all these bits.Be advised that 20% of this book is an overly detailed index. That’s a lot of wasted space. He also doesn’t tell the whole story of Wizards of the Coast, instead foisting us off to a web link. Lazy. I’d rather have had that story than the index, because as I said, his retelling of the actual history is extremely well done. I’d also have liked to see more about other TSR games, like the classic Star Frontiers.I also wish he’d included photographs. That would have been fantastic. All in all, a great history, but padded in my opinion, especially considering the ebook price.

Dungeons and Dragons type of gaming has become ubiquitous in our culture. Street gang-bangers communicate "Rolling Twenties" in their graffiti to signify a thing going perfectly well. D&D has become a gateway to philosophy and contemplation to a generation of men, and to lesser extent, women, who start thinking about life and reality within the framework of gaming. A lot of good writing can be done on this subject, but this book is not it.This book purports to be the story of D&D and people who play it, but it skips over a lot, and what it brings to mention, it glosses over. How Gygax lost control over his creation, and his business relationships with the Blumes and Williams is a fascinating question and a cautionary tale. If you do enough on-line research, you can get a fairly decent picture of that disaster. When professional journalist does it, especially a former business magazine editor like David Ewalt, I expect insights greater than what I can retrieve from public Internet. Instead, Ewalt glosses over Gygax and Williams in positive light and whitewashes their questionable actions, if he mentions them at all. In fact, Lorraine Williams was a shark looking for a publishing company to promote her family franchise (Buck Rogers), as evidenced by fact that almost from get-go she entered into secret negotiations with the Blumes to purchase their shares of the company. Gygax himself was no angel. All of the would-be historians of D&D tend to ignore the fact that by some accounts, Gygax was abrasive to Don Kaye's wife and has turned her against him with his boorish attitudes towards women (apparently). At the beginning of Chapter 14, Ewalt mentions an invitation that he got from the Wizards of the Coast to unveil their D&D Next (5th Edition). This invitation referred to him as "...trusted press partner and a respected member of the D&D community." Wizards of the Coast are diabolical marketers, not that I criticize them for it, they are in business of making money and they have to promote their product. They are innovative to match the gargantuan size of TSR of yore. With their Fifth Edition, they have instituted what is in essence a training program, where game store owners get D&D 5th Ed. materials and run in-store game sessions to teach their customers how to play it. This is great innovative marketing, but what of their Press Partners? And what is a NON-Trusted Press Partner? A professional journalist who does his or her job, maintains objectivity and hides nothing? Than what would be a "Trusted Press Partner"? A PR Stooge?Historically, TSR attempted to be the Standard Oil of the role-playing games and Dungeons and Dragons was its wildly successful brand. It wasn’t just a game. It was actually a way of playing fantasy role-playing, an efficient gaming format and a design paradigm that overshadowed other, mostly indie role-playing games, which evolved with the times and introduced newer and more innovative gaming concepts, while D&D game mechanics changed and evolved a lot less. Ewalt posits this book about to be D&D specifically, and so indie games like Dust Devils and Little Fears are outside his scope. However, Ewalt mentions in passing that Wizards of the Coast (and he) believe that the six editions of D&D (White Box, Basic, AD&D, AD&D Second Edition, 3.5 and 4) are actually different games. It would have been interesting to read just how these six game styles differ among each other, but Ewalt does not say much. Ewalt mentions failed competitors to D&D, such as Tunnels and Trolls, and a book similar to Monster Manual, that Chaosium published, but fails to write about Chaosium's Runequest, and other competitors to Dungeons & Dragons, such as Chivalry and Sorcery, Pendragon, and Man, Myth & Magic, that ultimately failed to get market share, and some, such as C&S, started imitating D&D. What these other games were all about, how they differed from D&D as well as why they did not succeed, would have made for some fascinating reading, alas the subject matter for a different book and a different author! In the beginning of the book, Ewalt declares that he plays the 3.5 Edition of the game and tells off any possible gamer, who might argue, claiming this book to be for non-gamers. He then spends entire page 214 arguing the virtues of the new D&D 5th edition over 3.5. Who are his intended audience? Another thing that I didn't like was that Ewalt kept referring to himself as a Nerd and to D&D gaming as a Nerd pastime. Initially, I thought that this was a conceit, where he was mugging for compliments. Ewalt is all over You Tube, lecturing and giving talks and speeches, like some sort of an Elder Statesman of D&D. He is fit, well dressed, and can talk to an audience, anything but a Nerd. Then, the more he dwells on this subject as his book goes on, it becomes clear, just how much Ewalt must have internalized the social class structure and its values. The home D&D game that he is using as an example of D&D play throughout this book, essentially pits progressive warrior liberators of humanity against capitalist (his own words) Vampire oppressors, who pen humanity in cages and use it as food. The players in his group too, can be described as the creative elite - a performance artist, a would-be screen-play writer, a non-profit social work exec, etc.One of the players in my game has encountered Ewalt and three other players mentioned in this book at a public game at a store in Manhattan, New York. Her remembers them well. They intimidated him in a way that my friend does not understand. He couldn’t explain to me what it was about them that made him nervous. The first game session nobody talked to him, other than gaming. Second session, one of the players talked to him and pumped him for information, finding out that my player is a delivery man. Just a delivery man. Not a day job, not a temporary job. Only a full-time job that my friend was doing all his life to support himself after dropping out of high school and failing to join the Army or get a City job. The third game session, they dropped him like a hot potato. Progressives.

Too much memoir not enough biography/history. As an owner of a gaming store I've had plenty of occasions where someone tells me their favorite moments from an RPG campaign. It's always more interesting to the speaker than the listener because role play is so personal. This is where the book falls down: Ewalt relates sessions of playing with his friends in every chapter sort of as a narrative arch for the book? I really don't care and appreciated those first person accounts of their gaming session being in italics so i could skip it and get onto the good stuff, the reason i bought the book. Yet this brings up the second failing. After a thorough history of the creation of D&D and first years, he just starts to fast forward over the rise and fall of TSR, the purchase by Wizards, and how D&D came back with d20 and 3.0/3.5. I wanted the whole business/biographical story of D&D, i got a pretty good origin story and then some highlights after AD&D. It's like he or the publisher got tired of working on it and just wanted to ship it. It's too bad, because the decline of TSR, the transition to Wizards, then the fan revolt over 4th edition would be great stories with important life/business lessons in them, even if just what not to do.This is much more a story of Gary Gygax than it is D&D.

This convenient pocket guide provides the foundations of knowledge in informatics, allowing radiographers in training and in practice, to understand, use and develop more efficient ways of imaging that will in turn deliver improved patient care. I would recommend this book or several copies of this book to every healthcare IT department that supports imaging informatics and healthcare messaging in hospitals. - Dr Dewinder S Bhachu, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London. This book covers radiology image storing, data collection and distribution, and radiology information technology, all relating to continuing advances in radiology technology over the last two decades. The compact chapters offer succinct and to-the-point information and important subtopics in informatics. The book also makes good use of pictures, diagrams, and charts to further simplify the information.-David James Demick, BS(Froedtert Hospital) I would recommend this book or several copies of this book to every healthcare IT department that supports imaging informatics and healthcare messaging in hospitals.-RAD Magazine, September, 2018
