I bought this book for a library at a technical college upon the recommendation of an older student. After receiving the book, I agree with his recommendation: this book makes it easy for a man to dress himself successfully for the workplace. Most students today seem completely clueless about work attire. I have had students rush into the library on their way to a job interview, clutching a tie bought minutes before and begging anyone to help them put the thing on: they have never worn a tie. They head out to interviews dressed entirely in gray and black but wearing tan shoes. And those are the ones who have a clue. The rest seem to think wearing wrinkled cargo pants with a t-shirt is doing fine, because these are their clean clothes. Nothing fits them; it's either too big or too small. The nice thing about Chic Simple Dress is that it is stuffed with photos of clothing - not models - clothing: coordinated and grouped by function (business, casual, etc.) making it easy to understand the book's advice. I strongly recommend this book to men wanting to win by making the correct impression. Buy it, borrow it, get your hands on it any way you can, and read it before your next job interview. You ARE judged by the way you present yourself. Mary Mac

The book is probably the best book on the market for how to dress in 2006. I purchased this book to compete with the younger business crowd in interviews. I find it exceptional on style representation of how men dress. It does not emphasis the uniform of an office. It lacks empahsis on the male tendancey to expect everyone to show involvement by dressing alike. I call this the socially conditioning of men to follow a uniform dress code. I suspect this comes from all the socializing in sports acitivites. It is both a signals of member of your team and the oposing team. How you dress in work especially corporate America has major implications on how you are viewed in your work place. I suggest adjusting your style to each circumstance: work, play, social life to give the best impression

I love this book, I really love the coverage of accessories and colors and overall classic men’s styles and advice on styles. It even covers shaving and other items. Great pictures and visual guides as well. Overall, great book, I highly recommend.

An absolute must read before entering the workplace. If you are currently working in a professional setting, then run to read this book. The book has a blend of pictures and descriptions, so you can read slowly or rush through to find the key details.

Book was in excellent condition and arrived quickly. Great price. Thanks!

A great addition to my collection from the same Author

Along with Chic Simple: Men's Wardrobe, this book is a must have for your Men's Fashion Library. I especially like how that chapters are built on where to focus purchases as your income increases.

i bought this book when i first got here in the US. i have read it like 3 times cover to cover already. very informative and a necessity to anyone who doesnt know the american way of dressing.. thanks amazon!

Trying to catch up with UK life in the new age. I guess I did. Jonathan Coe revealed his identity: elite academic with only a patronizing understanding of his “inferiors”!

I’ve had mixed responses to Jonathan Coe novels over the years. I loved The Rotters’ Club and What a Carve Up!, I thought The Closed Circle (follow up to The Rotters’ Club) and House of Sleep were okay, and I’ve started one or two others that I couldn’t get through at all.Middle England picks up the story of the protagonists of The Rotters’ Club in 2010 and follows their stories up to and after the Brexit referendum. It doesn’t have a conventional narrative arc, it’s more a series of vignettes showing how Benjamin, Doug and co react to current events and to changes in their personal lives. It’s a bit like a hearing a series of anecdotes about old friends, moderately entertaining if you know them (though I’m not sure you’d be interested if you don’t).While What a Carve Up! took apart Tory rule with savagery and humour and heart, I found this examination of Brexit terribly condescending. If you’ve been following politics at all in recent years, I don’t think you’ll learn or experience anything new. If you’re not interested in politics, why would you read it at all?The political points made in the novel, such as they are, are so crass and obvious that they make phone-ins seem erudite. Benjamin’s father and pretty much everyone of their generation is a cross between Victor Meldrew and Katie Hopkins, while it seems the true pain of Brexit for the protagonists is that they have to listen to dreadful people’s views over dinner.I know that people actually do say the things that you think are only clichés (who hasn’t sat through an awkward family Christmas or a wedding trying to ward off comments about how ‘the neighbourhood has gone downhill since they moved in’, or ‘my best friend’s cousin’s brother is getting a fortune in disability and he plays golf three times a week’) but in a novel don’t we want something a bit more challenging? Something that tries to understand the lives and thoughts of people who disagree with us? Something to make us consider the bigger forces that led us to this point? If Coe is on the side of progressives, why does he make all the characters so unsympathetic and out of touch? Sophie, Benjamin’s niece, doesn’t think racism is a thing in one chapter, then in the next thinks an Asian woman is ‘brave’ because she runs a class for speeding drivers(?!). Sophie’s beginning a career in higher education but instead of struggling to pay the rent on precarious short-term contracts, she drifts airily between teaching in Birmingham, research at the British Library and lucrative private lecture gigs. The people who are really suffering are at the periphery of the story. Doug’s privileged daughter, who invites herself to a riot on a kind of poverty safari, is at least self-aware.I don’t think you can call it satire if it doesn’t make you laugh, or give you some insight, or motivate you to change. This just made me sad.*I received a copy of Middle England from the publisher via Netgalley.

This has been reviewed in the main media extensively. And Coe has many regular readers. What can a posting here add?It is easy to read. Coe fashions great set pieces and can be very funny. The story is set out plainly, the characters have depth without complications. He covers the period, 2010 to 2018 well, and gets the details correct. It is the third of a series and for those familiar with the first two pleasure can be found in seeing how lives change with circumstance and age. The effect of the latter is at least as important as the former. Many of the main characters are coming to the close of their parts if not in the circumstances they desired. Love is still possible, if in the case of Benjamin Trotter difficult and highly amusing. It has been trailed as a Brexit novel. Some will feel that the cast is mainly middle-class – but as most of the cast come from the earlier novels, it could not be otherwise. Most are hostile to Brexit but again that fits with their characters already established. For this reader the dramatic centre of the novel is the opening night of 2012 watched by all the characters on television. He captures so well the generous and genuine patriotism of the London Olympics. How did that turn so sour, inward-looking and in truth vicious four years later? It is hard not to agree with Coe and identify maleficent forces at work. Orwell would have made more of this, of course, and more potently and pointedly. Coe's satire is much more muted. The novel has a soft ending. People look to the future. A further instalment is promised. One hopes our better selves will have triumphed when it is finally written. The name of one character was auctioned off. You can cheat to find out, but it might be more intriguing to discover it through the novel.

I have read, and loved, all of Coe's previous novels and Middle England is no exception. However, I almost didn't read it because I am so depressed by the Brexit news everyday I just couldn't face a 'Brexit novel'! I am so glad I did though.Middle England forms a trilogy with previous books The Rotter's Club and Closed Circle. And what a trilogy it is! Middle England brings us back in touch with the same characters twenty years on, as they reach middle age. I did feel that the Brexit element was a little heavy-handed in parts of this novel (I know, I know, it's a Brexit novel but even so...) but as usual his characters were sharply drawn, sometimes cartoonish but only in a way that reflects the real-life political buffoons that have been inflicted on us, and his depictions of the ups and downs of long-term friendships and relationships had real pathos at times.Coe's writing is a pure joy to read.

#123,515 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book was not at all what I was expecting, but contains some good advice that many would benefit from. For some background, my wife and I are relatively young and have career jobs. I bought this book for information on making the most of any extra income, learning more about investing strategies, options for generating passive income, and improving my personal finances. I did learn a few things, but not on these topics (maybe a bit on the last point). The book primarily focuses on interesting finds and anecdotes from the authors' years of research on millionaires in America. The book is divided into eight chapters:1. Meet the Millionaire Next Door2. Frugal Frugal Frugal3. Time, Energy, and Money4. You Aren't What You Drive5. Economic Outpatient Care6. Affirmative Action, Family Style7. Find Your Niche8. Jobs: Millionaire vs. HeirsThe author essentially splits everyone into two categories: Underaccumulators of Wealth (UAWs) and Prodigious Accumulators of Wealth (PAWs). UAWs have a low net worth relative to income, and the opposite for PAWs and uses these terms throughout the book. His primary argument is that PAWs get to be wealthy by living well below their means - these are people who do not look like millionaires, they live in modest neighborhoods, drive domestic sedans, wear a Timex, and usually have a blue-collar job that does not come with an expensive lifestyle associated and as a result can accumulate a sizeable nest egg. On the other hand, UAWs are typically well-educated professionals with high paying and high profile jobs (doctors, attorneys), but due to societal pressures associated with their social standing are forced to squander all their money living in luxury neighborhoods, driving German cars, and sending their kids to private schools. Their expensive lifestyle means that they spend most of their income and as a result have a low net worth, despite outward appearances.I agree that this is good advice for just about anyone: live below your means and prioritize financial security over social standing. Growing up in a single-income family living in a modest middle class neighborhood, I'm quite used to the live-below-your-means philosophy and I think it gave me at least some sense of good financial discipline. If my parents are any indication, it works great.Where the authors really lost my interest is that the rest of the book is chock full of anecdotes and some rather uninformative statistics to drive a few other points home. While some of these are good points and undoubtedly useful, they always seem to come with caveats or don't draw any real conclusion, which I found frustrating. Most of the points could have been made succinctly in about 1/10 the amount of page space the authors dedicate to them. These include:- Most millionaires in America are self employed business owners, because they run their personal finances like their business finances. However, going into business for yourself is very risky so we don't really recommend that as a viable way to get rich.- Very few millionaires have ever spent much money on a nice suit, pair of shoes, or luxury watch. They usually live in modest neighborhoods or rural areas where the cost of living and social pressures of consumerism are lower.- First generation millionaires (often immigrants) tend to be succeeded by children with financial struggles, since the parent's desire to "give them a better life" pushes them into careers where they become UAWs, and their upbringing in our consumerist culture impedes their ability to live frugally. But even if it turns them into UAWs, encourage them to go to college and aspire to a while-collar professional job.- Parents giving money to their children develops and reinforces poor financial habits. This money is almost always immediately spent, and these children generally have no savings since they are looking to their parents as their safety net and counting on an inheritance. Doing things like buying children a house in an upscale neighborhood or sending grandkids to a private school actually makes the children worse off, since they have to spend more to maintain the associated lifestyle.- The authors spend an inordinate amount of time and space comparing different careers, which I found next to useless since I'm very happy with my chosen career (Engineer) and have no intention of changing. They continually deride pretty much every professional job you can think of, and simultaneously praises how great working for yourself or owning a business is while going on about how difficult and risky it is to actually own a successful business. The author does not recommend changing careers, but again, this is more of a discussion of what their research has shown than any sort of "how to" advice.- Car buyers fall into four categories: whether you buy new or used, and whether you buy from the same place or shop around. The authors devote an entire chapter to this while only coming to the following conclusions: no method of buying a car is the clear winner, but if you own a business you may benefit from your connections with the owners of car dealerships; and most millionaires drive unassuming domestic (and to a lesser extent, Japanese) cars purchased new or lightly used.A final note - curiously, I found no mention of anything real-estate related, which to me is highly unusual in any sort of book about building wealth. The only investment advice found here is in the final chapter and could be summarized as "invest in what you know." That is, if you work in a certain sector, your knowledge of the industry will help you make good investment decisions. Not sure how I feel about this one. For example: not working in technology doesn't mean blue-chip tech stocks are a bad investment. Take it with a grain of salt. One last complaint: most of the financial figures are presented in mid-1990s dollars. I found it frustrating to have to mentally convert to today's dollars to get a relative sense. The authors took the time to update the preface in 2010, it would have been nice to see a revision to the figures quoted throughout the book. (For reference, one 1996 dollar is worth about 1.6 dollars in 2017).In summary, I was surprised about the amount of praise heaped on this book. I would hardly categorize it as a self-help book, it's more a retrospective on the authors' research and a collection of anecdotes and interesting conclusions about the countless Americans leading unglamorous lives while accumulating appreciable amounts of wealth. It's a quick read and I made it through the whole book on a 5-hour flight with time to spare. I would only recommend this book as an interesting overview of some good financial habits, or as an eye-opener for those with luxurious financial tendencies who struggle to save money despite their income level. However, for those who have already developed some discipline and are looking for detailed strategies and advice on personal finance and building wealth via investments and generating passive income, look elsewhere.

This is such an inspiring read because it shows almost anyone can become a millionaire if you live below your means and invest well. I love that the majority of millionaires are people you'd never suspect because they don't live flashy lives in big houses with high-status toys abounding. If you make $200,000 a year, but spend $220,000, you're in trouble. But if you make $50,000 a year and live on $35,000, investing the rest, over time you're going to be in great shape.I grew up in a super-affluent suburb. My friends' lived in big houses and mansions with luxury cars and country club memberships. We lived in one of the smallest houses in the suburb. My mom was so frugal. I thought it was such a drag!! But when she died (too young), she'd saved enough so that my dad, who lived another 30-some years, was comfortable in retirement. I wonder now if any of my high school friends' parents were actually living on the edge in trying to keep up with the Joneses.Years ago, I used to charge like crazy. Now I save like crazy, just like my mom.

In a word, this book was fascinating. In summary, this book was essentially a long stream of curated data distilled into a finely tuned narrative that I just couldn't put down.At first glance, the title "The Millionaire Next Door" might sound like some trashy novel just begging for glamour and it's 15 minutes in the spotlight, but this couldn't be further from the truth. I assume most people, when they think of the world 'millionaire,' they think of a high class, high consumption lifestyle full of limitless indulgence. However, Thomas Stanley goes through great length in this book to show precisely why this isn't so. Through countless interviews and a vast list of data, Stanley pulls together that the average millionaire is anything but the cocaine-induced celebrity so often featured in mainstream media.Quite the opposite, being an average millionaire is within reach of just about everyone. The American Dream is alive and well, but only for those who are willing to sacrifice. It's kinda funny in a sense. This book put into words and data a lot of things I noticed growing up. I've always said that there are two ways to have more money: make more or spend less, and I prefer to do both. As it turns out, most millionaires feel the same way, and they invest their savings into appreciating assets rather than depreciating assets, like real estate and stocks/bonds as opposed to clothing and cars. The average millionaire doesn't reach such a status until late in life, and inheriting large sums of money more often than not dooms any developing child to a life of high-spending with few fulling achievements.I could go on, but it's really pointless. In a way, Thomas is simply a messenger, presenting the data he found in an easy to follow format that drives home a list of bullet of points. However, despite this, I still found this book amazing and uplifting, because the message it presents is exceptionally hopeful and inspiring. Everyone should read this book, to help themselves and their finances, because there are no second chances when it comes to time and money.

This pretty much supports everything that Dave Ramsey says about the differences between those who truly are wealthy and those playing the part. If you want to be wealthy, do what wealthy people do! This has nothing to do with luck, or being an entrepreneur (although it doesn’t hurt) but living below your means, having a budget, investing and not trying to impress people you don’t like with money you don’t have! Every now and again on the Dave Ramsey podcast he hosts the millionaire theme hour and it is really inspiring to note that the majority of millionaires he interviews are regular “blue collar” people. They live in our neighborhoods, drive used cars and work at our companies, hence “the millionaire next door!”

'Being Mortal' by Atul Gawande is really two books in one - the first half talks about what it is like to get old in America and what happens to the elderly in our current medically-focused society. He speaks of nursing homes, assisted livings, and newer models of care for the elderly, but eventually comes to a point which is key - that people should be able to exist as they wish during their final days, but that our current system only places unfair restrictions upon them at a time when they need freedom the most. Gawande insinuates that during the time that we feel we are helping our elders, we may actually be hastening their demise. It's an interesting commentary which has to be read carefully to be believed. The second half of the book starts out with an article by Gawande from the New Yorker, "Letting Go", in which he describes how our current society addresses dying people at the end of life, including the incredibly tragic story of a new mother with lung cancer. This is a powerful article / chapter which is riveting in its stories and very intelligent in its commentary. After this, Gawande goes on to explain his own personal journey with mortality, in the illness, decline, and eventual death of his father from a spinal cord tumor. It is this section which is probably the most powerful one in the book, not just because of its personal nature, but because of how Gawande is able to intersperse the discussion of death with his own personal experience. While you find yourself being drawn in as he shares his own story, you are also amazed as how he is able to clearly lay out what is happening to his father in the context of so many others that share the same fate.In the first paragraph of the epilogue, Gawande lays out the most important theme of the book - "Being mortal is about the struggle to cope with the constraints of our biology, with the limits set by genes and cells and flesh and bone. Medical science has given us remarkable power to push against these limits, and the potential value of his power was a central reason I became a doctor. But again and again, I have seen the damage we in medicine do when we fail to acknowledge that such power is finite and always will be." This is the most powerful paragraph of the book, and one that everyone who reads this book should remember if they are ever faced with the circumstances that Gawande faced in this book.Gawande's a gifted writer, and this one is a gem. Make sure you read it.

This is a timely book for me because my parents are very elderly (94 and 88) and determined to stay in their home until the last possible second. After reading this thought provoking book that teaches so much I am thinking that it may be possible for them to stay until the end which could be next week or a few years from now. It's going to take some organizing, but it looks like it is worth some research and time. It makes me sad to see how much of their independence they have lost, but they still enjoy their lives as limited as they are. There is a tendency to treat old people like children which I realize now is usually very wrong. My dad is a diabetic and we (my siblings and I) have told him over and over that his diet of sugary cereal or cinnamon rolls and orange juice for breakfast and light store brand fruit yogurt with grapes and three cookies for lunch is not what he should be eating. He acts surprised every time we mention this, but doesn't change a thing because I now understand that he wants the independence of eating as he pleases. He has lost so much--can barely hear or see or walk, that he needs these very small pleasures to continue. I imagine he doesn't see the point in giving up anything else because he has so little left. My mother's memory is going and she has COPD, but somehow has lots of get up and go. She does a lot for my dad even though I suspect she is the sicker one. Being Mortal is making me think about the best way to help my parents which will probably start with asking them what they want. One thing that surprised me completely was Dr. Gawande's statement that genetics is only a small part of reaching old age. Here I've been thinking that because my parents have lived so long that reaching old age is probably a no brainer for me. I have to think about that possiblity some more--a lot more. This book has some touching stories about very sick people and how their lives ended. Unfortunately for many sick people the medical community is driven to act, but not necessarily to do what is best for the individual. It seems to me that they've forgotten "the do no harm" part of being a doctor. It seems to me it does harm people to ruin the time sick people have left.A very through provoking book that will ultimately make me think about what I want when the end is near. I wish everyone would read it; especially medical people.

#112,198 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just received this book yesterday and I noticed a couple problems with this book right away.1. There at large sections of text missing. For example, on page 96 there is a sentence that stops in the middle, page 97 has some garbled text and then page 98 starts with a whole new section, so the sentence is never completed. Page 400,section 6.6.2,starts but there is no text (just an example) and page 401 begins section 6.6.3(so no text for section 6.6.2). Section 7.5.2, page 466, indicates there is supposed to be a list following but page 467 is almost completely blank (more garbled formatting), and there is no list on 468. This goes on and on throughout the book.2. Some places have this weird gibberish formatting which, I believe, is that causes the missing text.I am including pictures of what I am talking about.3. It is an international edition, which would be no big deal except that I can’t contact Pearson because it was not an authorized sale. This is all stuff I found within a few minutes of perusing the book...I am sure there are going to be even more errors once I start reading it.

The Dragon Book, as it is affectionately named, is something of a legendary resource among programmers and computer-science students. Not only is it one of the only references on the subject of compilers as a whole, but it's very well-written and contains a huge amount of information. It considers tricky subjects like lexing and parsing in a serious theoretical way but also includes some precious code examples.Initially when I bought this book because I was nervous about the new edition. The previous 1986 edition with the quaint illustration of the red dragon was the bench-mark gold standard for compiler texts, and I was worried that the new edition (with it's digitally animated cover, which loses much of the charm of the original) would be marred by loses and compromises. That anxiety was ill-founded. The new edition is every bit as wonderful and complete as the previous version was, with valuable information updated but nothing that I can see that is lost. One small complaint I might have, and this is not something that the authors could control, is that some important new developments have been made in the world of compilers and interpreters in the past few years. Things like PEG (Packrat parsing and OMeta), parser combinators and compound grammars are all new in the front-end world, While the state of the art in interpreters and VMs is leading to things like JIT which are turning out to be of central importance in many places but which are barely mentioned in this book at all.Anyway, on balance this is an excellent book and one that is well worth buying if you're interested in compilers, interpreters, VMs or other infrastructure components like that. This is a must-read if you're interested in working on a major existing compiler project or if you would like to dabble with your own little language or language runtime.

This book is not intended for sale in the United States. On the facing page to the TOC is this notice: "This edition is authorized for sale only in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Circulation of this edition outside of these territories is UNAUTHORIZED". There are also stickers on the front cover, top left and the back cover, bottom center, that might be hiding similar warnings. Both of these stickers just have "NEW" printed on them. Also from the back cover: "This international edition preserves the cutting-edge approach and pedagogy of the original, but may also feature alterations, customization and adaptation from the United States version."Follow-up ... I filed an inquiry with Amazon and heard from the seller and the sale is entirely legal following a Supreme Court decision back in the '90s. So much for the above. There are some physical defects, however, as some pages are not cut at the top and the text skews downward. Still readable.

I'm a senior Computer Science student and will be taking a course on compilers in the upcoming quarter. I was incredibly excited to see this book listed for the course, because it has a legendary status. If you watch some of the Microsoft's compiler related videos, for example, you can see this book sitting in the background in some of the videos. My school has made some poor choices with books for other courses... needless to say, I was very happy to see this one.I bought this book well ahead of time, because the subject of compilers is not an easy one. Luckily, I just completed a course on Formal Languages & Automata, so some of the things involved in the compilation process is less frightening for me than they would be otherwise. However, I knew I would have to get a good head-start to do well in class, but also to truly learn and understand the subject. This book is very well written and I've gotten far enough into it to comfortably comment on it. As far as theory-packed books are concerned, this one is top-notch. The authors made it very approachable and it doesn't feel like they're trying to bloat the content with academic nonsense in order to place themselves on a pedestal above all else. No, I can confidently say that they've done an amazing job in making it as friendly as possible. With that said, and as I've mentioned, this is not an easy topic. Unless you're exceptionally amazing at comprehending complex material through the first read-through, expect to read this book a few times. On the bright side, it's a pretty good read and you will learn a lot from it.If you have the right mindset and the necessary passion, this is the book for you. The authors have done a fantastic job and you will not regret investing time into it.
