This book is NOT about deep learning principles or practice. Despite its titillating title, this is strictly a personal memoir which deals entirely in stories about past colleagues, students, and friends who worked with the author in developing rhe field of neural networks.Since about 1980 Professor Terrence Sejnowski has worked with biologically inspired neural nets. However, his work is NOT notable for the theory behind or the development of today's deep learning algorithms that arose circa 2006. Thus this book consists wholly of a light historical introduction to most of the people who were active in the days of early NNs (since 1975), and Dr Sejnowski's kinship with them, but little beyond that.The text explains none of the technical details of Dr Sejnowski's work, nor the work of other NN pioneers, nor does it offer any tangible predictions or insights into the likely implications of NNs, deep learning, or AI.Frankly, titled as it is, this book was a HUGE disappointment to me. It doesn't delve into deep learning nor any other facet of artificial intelligence to any extent. Read it only if you want a breezy history of Dr. Sejnowski.

This book is a memoir. In addition, although the author does not explain or go into detail about about deep learning, he gives a good perspective on its development over the time of his career, and places it in a larger perspective. Despite not explaining or clarifying technical terms, theory and practical methods, his book is fairly enlightening, as he contributed in important ways to the field, and knew or worked with numerous researchers who contributed significantly. The book has numerous insightful remarks. He seems to have a very open mind, an enormous amount of curiosity, and a tremendous dedication. I recommend his book to achieve some perspective on this currently important field, which has much potential for contributing to many fields of study, and itself has been a multidisciplinary field. Deep learning seems to have acquired much more importance in recent years with the great progress that has been made in computers, in their computing power, miniaturization and success that deep learning has achieved in numerous specialized areas.

This is a great book for you to understand and appreciate the work of those scientists who contributed the success of today's machine learning approach to artificial intelligence.I am a practitioner of mathematical modeling with different methods. I always believed the nature can and did give us a lot inspiration for scientific discovery and the neural network borrowed the idea from biological neural structure. But this book demonstrated how extensively our progress in neurobiology and artificial intelligence directly derived from biological study of organic structure.Highly recommend this book for those who have a technical background to enjoy the anecdotes as "gossipy" in their spare time. For some topic you will enjoy more if you know the technical background.

Did not like the book and stopped reading half into it. The book is not for an average reader. Felt like you would need a PhD in neuroscience to understand it. Waste of money!

The Information Age will mature with AI. It is all not so simple as you might think. Sejnowski was a major shaper of this field and I’m not aware of anything better.I’m still waiting for the Tao of AI, etc.

Very interesting and insightful summary and history of artificial intelligence. I am also very impressed by the quality of the print book . The cover and pages are some of the best quality I have seen in a hardcover book.

I was so excited for this to arrive and it was worth the wait. Absolutely gorgeous. Just lovely. The hard case is delightful, and the cover is embossed with a monotone Moomin. The introduction is in vivid colour and there is a free poster that I didn't see in the product description. It feels like too little to pay for something so well made with love. For some reason I'm having this bizarre urge to buy another one just in case. If you love Moomin, you'll love this. All the comics are there in the original black and white, nice clear print and sturdy paper.

This is a wonderful collection of Tove Jansson's Moomin comic strip.....complete and all in one place. A lovely book, excellent quality and well worth the price. The added bonus is seeing her original sketches. I was not a fan when I bought it, just curious. I am a fan now. It would be nice if they put the remaining years drawn by her brother in a similar book.

I'm about 1/4 through this book reading it a bit every night and I absolutely adore it! First time reading Moomin!

It's a ginormous book! I love it though! It comes with a cute little poster that matches the cover of the slip case, I kinda wish that the book itself had art on it beyond being imprinted but no matter! I have it on my book stand in my living room, a "place of honor" :)

This was on my son's Birthday List, and it is a BIG, heavy volume, and a series of cartoons which he really, really likes.

Thank you Tove for all your life's work. Our grandchildren, children and we relish the moments of delight Moomin brings. The book is exquisite and it is mostly black and white since that is how the originals were done. There is nothing better than a day with Moomin and a great cup of coffee.

Moomin, so innocent and honest and cute. I love this book. As gigantic as it is, I take it out of the protective carton when I take breaks at work and read it on my desk. Moomin's simplicity grounds me.

It's a great collection of all Moomin comic strips. And - of course they are black and white, they were b/w originally! Very fun reading + great quality, as usual Fantagraphics has + bonus scetches and drawings from the author.

I originally bought this for a class I was taking but I ended up keeping it! I started college a couple of years ago and then I took a break for one year. Upon coming back I had to take a college class on being "Self-regulated learners". This class had this book as one of the required readings. This book really helped me get back on track with going to school At first, I really didn't think it would be much help but I think for many people just starting college or even later this book could be rather helpful. It helps with study tools and learning how to organize your schedule to help with all your assignments and everything else in your life. It also has a lot of worksheets and activities to help you figure out your learning and studying styles in order for you to know your weaknesses and strengths. This book is incredibly helpful for me starting college again.

Interesting hypothesis about Australian Aboriginal agricultural society.Pascoe makes the claim that Australian Aboriginal society, in part, was an agricultural one rather than being a wholly hunter-gatherer one. The claims seem to be strongest in the Murray-Darling basin.The difficulty in sustaining this hypothesis is the degradation of oral history due to genocide, and the destruction of Aboriginal artefacts to forestall Native Title claims. History is being erased before our eyes.Also, the prevalent accepted wisdom that Aborigines were hunter-gathers makes it difficult for this hypothesis to be investigated properly.

Sensational ideas presented non-sensationally, this book is a must read for everyone who has not yet read it.I'm a white Australian woman aged 70+, born and raised in Tasmania, the most Anglo-minded of the states, whose history of harsh treatment of convict and Aboriginal people is as dark as the worst excesses of cruelty on 'the mainland' as we call it. My urban grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles were well educated, many in professional occupations. In my day, as Bruce Pascoe reminded me, our history courses were anglo- and euro-centric. The senior history teacher was so very boring that I opted out of history asap, which I now regret, but even if I had stuck with it, I now know that I would have learned very little about our indigenous people because, basically that teacher and the rest of my teachers even through tertiary level, knew very little of the ancient civilisation that prevailed before europeans come to the island continent now known as Australia. I knew plenty about the Ancient Egytians, Etruscans, Mesapotamians, Greeks, Romans and a bit about medieval Europe, European colonisation of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, but almost nothing about the Australian Aborigines - they were so little mentioned it was as if there was nothing much to tell, anyway. (Incidentally my education rarely mentioned the Americas, either, except as an object of european exploration and colonisation) Though still below voting age I remember the heated discussion about the May 1967 referendum which passed to at last count Aboriginal people in the national census. Until I went to live in an Outback mining centre as a young bride, I had never seen, let alone met, anyone Aboriginal. For a long time now (not by choice but hubby's work) I've been living outside Australia, and so though I've learned a bit about these people along the way, I've missed much of the daily talk on radio and tv that might have taught me more sooner, and introduced me to the things in this book far sooner. Like many readers, I found this book fascinating, exciting and some how hopeful for a better future as more non-Aboriginal Aussies come to understand not only enormity of what happened to the Aboriginal civilisation, (which we can't unwind back to pre-1788) I hope the facts and ideas in this book lead to wider understanding of more appropriate land management across our damaged continent, and respect for our Aborigines' history and achievements.

My Green friends who place eucalypt forest gone wild at the pinnacle of their value system have got it badly wrong. Swathes of Australia only look like that today because of the dastardly deeds of the invaders of 1788 and histories written by the victors to eliminate the vanquished. In Dark Emu, Bruce Pascoe builds a comprehensive account of the farming, settlement and other markers of great civilisation that fill out the picture expounded in Bill Gammage's The Greatest Estate on Earth. Importantly Pascoe points the way to reviving this most neglected basket of foods which should be a cornerstone of international cuisine.Fortunately there is no shortage of evidence once people like Pascoe and Gammage start digging, from explorers' and settlers' diaries to scientific examination of remnant vegetation. The eight chapters of Dark Emu have copious footnotes pointing to an extensive bibliography. The first five chapters break the data up under broad headings: Agriculture, Aquaculture, Population and Housing, Storage and Preservation, Fire. The final three return to and develop issues raised in the introduction about the way this has been hidden so as to denigrate indigenous civilisation in the interests of the land acquisition goals of the invasion, together with how the very different indigenous value system had been worked out and flourished over 50,000 years.Books like this should be compulsory reading for all Australians. Looked at from even as close as our nearest major neighbour, the third rate Anglo-multi-culture that is the legacy of the ongoing occupation is of no global significance, while even those tiny hints of the riches of our indigenous culture which make it into the wider world and much more highly valued. We occupiers have more to learn form indigenous Australians than they have from us. Our highest aspiration should be to find a way forward together which ends and redresses our misdeeds.

I'm a baby boomer and love the mythology in superhero comics. If you like DC comics, then this book is for you.If you like Alex Ross's interpretation of DC comic characters or just his amazing artwork, this book is for you.If you want to know more about Alex's biographical and professional history beginning with childhood, family influences, professional beginnings and into his creative process .... this book is for you. The wonderful writer/designer Chip Kidd and photographer Geoff Spear have teamed up to produce an extraordinary "illustrated biography" of Alex Ross and his DC characters. Kidd's text is descriptive and insightful and includes numerous studies, hundreds of sketches and artwork and photos on almost every single page that highlight Ross's creative process and method. In addition to Kidd's narrative, the book is peppered with Alex Ross quotes and personal insights. I am especially drawn to how Ross re-envisioned the major characters of the DC universe and created three dimensional icons that owe a debt of gratitude to artists like Rockwell and Wyeth. Now I know how Ross uses photographs to set up other worldly lighting effects that make his characters look more realistic. Like Kirby, he has an innate belief in the iconic power of superheroes that gives them a dimension far beyond the usual four-colored adventures. The end result includes lush and vibrant colors with a scrupulous attention to detail that re-imagine the great super-heroes as they might actually appear if they existed today. His sense of realism is totally cool. I'm no artist, just a fan. so this book took me "behind the scenes" to experience Alex Ross at work in his studio. There is a video review in one of the other reviews where you can see the whole layout of the book. This is my second copy of this book, if I could give it a rating a six stars I would.

This book will astonish you even before you open it. The jacket has the images of two of the most iconic superheroes of DC, Superman and Batman, and below the jacket you'll find an unbelievable piece of art showing almost every DC superhero battling versus their respective villains.With an introduction from M Night Shyamalan, the book presents Alex from his early beginnings as a child trying to create comic book characters and how his mother kind of influenced him (even though he affirms this didn't happen, take a look at her mom's works and try to believe him)He then presents the DC characters one by one (the Batman session has some pages dedicated to the Joker only, no other villains are shown), the early drawings, original artwork from classics and the homage he has paid for covers, posters or special editions. Analysis on the symbols and the myths of each character are used to describe what Ross wants to project with his images. I don't think it necessary to mention which character has the larger amount of pages dedicated to himself only. You get to see in drawings the creative process he follows when creating a piece, the ideas scratched on a piece of paper, the drawings and possible posing and then the final image. There are pictures I has never seen until I got this book, when I first saw them my fisrt thought was ` I need to frame these', which came up as a bad idea as I would have had to frame the entire book.The abandoned ideas for `Portraits of villainy' are presented here in the form of pencil sketches that look pretty well, it is hard to imagine how they would have looked if the project had been completed. His takes on Hanna-Barbera, Mad magazine, Alan Moore, the animated style and World's finest are also present.Then there are pages and pages dedicated to 'Kingdom Come', from the early concepts and ideas, passing through sketches until the realization of the project. The possible prequel that never occurred, `The Kingdom' is also mentioned and the preliminary sketches by Ross are shown.Uncle Sam is also analyzed near the end of the book in the same way the other projects previously were.Then we have this section called `The process', in which we obviously get to see how Alex works using the book's cover as example. The final part of the book is a very nice bonus, a Batman/Superman special story written by Chip Kidd and Alex Ross created exclusively for this book.Indeed a great piece of collection, this book is a must for comic book fans. The hard cover presentation, the paper in which it is printed and the bonus stuff are worth the price to pay.

From story board to stunning completed product, an overview of Mr.Ross' DC comics work, focusing particularly on the big three; Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, with loving attention to the rest of the JLA as well.Lots of beautiful 'work in progress to completion' pictures and even a few that never got to see the go light of editors.Inspirational for the new painter or seasoned storybook artist - makes quite the case for gouache!Please note! this is NOT an 'origins' book or even a story, this is meant to specifically address the artwork itself and the processes by which it is done.By the by, many a comic book irritates me no end with its sexist imagery -this book is a rare exception in supehero comics.None of the women are bimboes and the men are, dare I say, as beautiful as the ladies.For my part, the explanations of the new Kingdom Come versions of the classic DC cast were the finest aspect of this book.If you're at all a fan of Alex Ross' incredible way with a brush, you must own this, if only for the most drool worthy versions of beloved heroes.If you love the classic DC pantheon, you need this book, 'nuff said!

My 15 year old loves to draw and when his art teacher showed him this book, he was thoroughly impressed so I went on Amazon and got him his own copy. He read it from cover to cover and has learned a few things from Alex Ross' art. I will be ordering a few other books of his for the holidays. I'm sure my son will appreciate it.
