We Two: Victoria and Albert: Rulers, Partners, Rivals, by Gillian Gill

    Review

“Gillian Gill has written a superbly accessible account of the marriage of Queen Victoria and Albert of Saxe-Coburg. She makes us understand that it was a union constantly pulled between two contradictory imperatives: the need for the Queen to be supreme head of state and Albert her subject, and the requirement that the nineteenth-century wife should be her husband's subordinate in every way. Gill grippingly recounts the tensions and negotiations between Victoria and Albert, both in politics and in intimate and domestic life, as they tried to reconcile this contradiction. She is particularly good on the couple's later life and their relationships with their many children. Her book is the story not just of a marriage and a family but also of the way in which Victoria appeared to grant Albert precedence but ultimately came to control the relationship. After Albert's early death Victoria set about creating an enduring legend of her marriage and inevitably emerged as both heroine and victor. Gill skillfully shows exactly how she did it.”—Stella Tillyard, author of A Royal Affair and The Aristocrats"Every marriage is a balancing act. In this absorbing book, Gillian Gill shows how the royal couple counterpoised their partnership—and their passion—for twenty-one years while bearing the weight of the world on their shoulders."—Daniel Mark Epstein, author of The Lincolns: Portrait of a Marriage"Gillian Gill’s double biography, We Two, is intimate and delicious. Gill has a gift for finding the telling details which bring the royal couple to life, and she has created a fascinating study of a woman negotiating her supreme power in a male-dominated society and a traditional marriage. The push and pull between Albert, who is a complicated mixture of rigidity and softness, and Victoria, reluctant mother of nine and natural sovereign, makes a great story.”—Susan Quinn, author of Marie Curie: A Life“This is a more compassionate look into the lives of Victoria and Albert, in which they become people to whom we can relate––the stuffed shirts get sent to the laundry and a much softer fabric is returned!”—Anne Perry, author of the series of Victorian mysteries“Gill’s spirited reconstruction of Queen Victoria’s three-act drama of a life—as teen-age ruler, partner to her ambitious consort Prince Albert, and queen in her own right after his death—enjoins us to rethink the meaning of the word “Victorian,” too long a synonym for moral stuffiness. Perhaps now, with Gill’s timely book, we can revalue this much-maligned term to let it reflect Victoria’s courage in managing her long reign at a time when there were few opportunities for women of any rank, let alone for royals. A thought-provoking look at an era starting to grapple with issues that shed light on recent history.”—Carolyn Burke, author of Lee Miller, A Life “What a whale of a wonderful read this is! Queen Victoria and Prince Albert jump forward from these pages in all their full, complex humanity—she, the besotted, emotional wife; and he, the reserved, cool, moralizing spouse. We Two shares a passionate, often frustrating relationship, one fraught with unconscious rivalries. Gillian Gill tells us the full story of a royal marriage that was to have profound effects upon European history—and she does so in a compelling, thoroughly engrossing way.”––Maggie Scarf, author of September Songs

This is the clearest representation of the relationship between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert that I have read. It provides slants on their individual quirks and reveals a great deal about how dependent upon her husband the queen was during the years of their marriage. Albert is represented as a man of many talents, but despite that, his perception of himself indicates that he was not as proficient as he regarded himself to be. What we Americans regard to be Victorian traits, according to the author and her well researched material, are more appropriately a reflection of the Prince Consort's values. The most telling feature of the work is how their nine children were far more dependent upon their father for affection and nurturing than their mother who, despite her devotion to her husband, seems to find her children more of an irritation than anything, until they were adults. My next visit to the Victoria and Albert museum will be seen through somewhat different eyes.

One will learn a lot about Victoria the person and monarch and her complicated relationship with Albert, love of her life. Both of their upbringings were peculiar. Their relationship was also unusual. He was a sexist, dominating German who had a low opinion of women in general. But he was married to the richest and most powerful woman in the world.

I thought I was reading a biography about Queen Victoria, but soon came to learn that this book was more about her Prince Consort, Albert. In every sense of the word, when she married Albert he was the person making decisions on behalf of the Queen. She gladly gave him the authority to take over reading her documents and signing them in her behalf with her seal. I had no clue before reading this book, that their relationship was as such. The book quickly ends following his miserable death at the hand of typhoid. Shortly thereafter it alludes that Queen Victoria had a possible lover in John Brown and after his death, with an Indian gentleman. But there's 40 more years of her life after Albert dies, that isn't covered. If you want a full biography on just Queen Victoria. This is not it. This book is more about her Prince Consort.

I enjoyed the book. It was a different take on the Victoria and Albert story. Some of it was far-fetched. The author seems to find it impossible to believe two virgins could have enjoyed a passionate sex life. The idea that it worked because of his homosexual tendencies just seems dim to me. The two of them, based on everything that has ever been published in their own words, clearly did have a wonderful time in bed. Hollywood notions aside, lots of inexperienced couples down through time have enjoyed making love. Doing what comes naturally works; that's why we are all here. Gill does give you a good sense of how Victoria and Albert were very much a product of their time and yet did not fit neatly into expectations. The way they coped with their goals and their obstacles is what makes the pair so interesting.

Gillian Gill's intimate look at the marriage of England's Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg in what is now a united Germany makes for fascinating reading that separates "We Two: Victoria and Albert: Rulers, Partners, Rivals" from other accounts of the Victorian era. Unlike other histories of monarchical partnerships at a time when many kings and queens still held absolute power, this one focuses as much on the domestic interactions in the royal household as the political maneuvering inherent in any examination of leadership. In the first part of the book, Gill lucidly outlines the complicated aristocratic bloodlines that made Victoria as much a German as a Briton, and how World War I's notorious Kaiser Wilhelm II was a volatile grandson stemming from her union with Prince Albert. In clear language, Gill explains how Europe's royals were essentially a closely connected network of a few aristocratic families, all jostling for a leading role in European and world affairs. Unlike most European dynasties of the time, though, Queen Victoria's leadership was balanced by the power of Parliament, making her role one of negotiation and compromise with the nation's democratic lawmakers rather than one of iron mandates. How she and Prince Albert navigated that terrain along with the shifts in their personal relationship over time is the strength of this book. Their partnership as well as their rivalries in everything from public policy to child-rearing reveals the stresses and isolation at aristocracy's highest levels as well as the luxuries they enjoyed in their all-to-rare private moments. The contrast of their lifestyle in the palaces with that of the servants they employed, many of whom, such as the queen's dressers, hardly had any time off for lives of their own, is stark. The book also looks deeply into the family's tragedies, especially Albert's untimely death from typhoid fever and the genetic legacy of hemophilia that ran in the queen's bloodline, affecting the families of other royal houses as well.In the end, the history is a compassionate look at the responsibilities, hardships, and rare satisfactions of two rulers who were bonded like few others, but greatly competitive as well.If there is a weakness in the book, it is in the too-brief attention given to Victoria's long reign after Albert's death in the final chapter, which comes across more as an afterword than a satisfying summation of her many remaining years and achievements. Despite this lapse, Gill's research makes this history an essential guide for those wanting to sort out fact from fiction in the popular PBS series on Victoria, which just finished its second season last month.

It takes a scholar to assess whether this treatment is impermissibly revisionist, but this reading of Queen Victoria is certainly to my liking. Several years ago I read a biography of Empress Frederick based largely on the letters she exchanged with her mother, and I appreciated the portrait it revealed about both of them. Gill' s exploration of the social, cultural and familial pressures that caused this extraordinary woman to be a devoted civil servant, an apparently submissive wife and an imperious ruler at the same time owes a great deal to modern sensibilities, but nevertheless seems authentic. What I thought was particularly striking was her dislike of children and her resentment about her pregnancies. If in fact she was intimate with John Brown as so has been speculated, what a relief menopause must have been. It's too bad Albert died before they could experience that as a couple--though if Gill is right, Albert was relieved when he was no longer burdened with that marital duty.

I have been learning to use pastels for a few years now. I do portraits and landscapes and have had some wonderful teachers and excellent fellow students. I am totally hooked! I'm loving the learning and the journey. I've purchased many books on pastels and get something from all of them. This book has been one of my favorites. I love Mr. Dawson's writing style, his examples, and his demonstrations. When I heard the comparison between this and Susan Sarback's Capturing Radiant Color I went back to it and reread it. I agree that Susan has a valuable book........but not better than Doug's. Read them both...Learn from both. His is a really pleasant read with wonderful examples of his work.

Excelent book. Very interesting insights about interactions between colorsand light. A very good reference for pastel painters.

Beautiful art work. Not recommended for beginners.

Great information for the beginner with some experience. Have read the book more than once. Great reference.

Delivered as promised and in even better condition than advertised. Very satisfied

Very helpful. Writing kept your attention

    The variety of techniques shown.....

I like it for the information contained within...however, I felt like maybe the printing was a little dark and the book smelled of cigarette smoke.

This is a great book. It is easy to read and is a fast read. It is insightful, which is interesting considering the Rabbi is following a specific formula with each entry and repeating it over and over. Still, it is Inclusive and opened me up about what it means to be a force for light in this world. It didn't introduce me into anything I haven't thought before, but is like a concentrated syrum that evokes a sense that you need to be a force for change, a change agent, otherwise you are doing it wrong. You can't go wrong reading this book. I may have my doubts about the originality of the book, considering how heavily the Rabbi relies on quotes and then builds to the next point he wants to make. He shifts quickly, never resting too heavily on a particular citation. However, he doesn't back away from the truth of the text he is explicating, so I respect that. It is clear he did good in grad school. This is very solid work though rubbing close to being derived.

Pirkei Avot made relevant for a modern audience! This was a really interesting take on the teachings of the ancient rabbis and the book brought a lot of their teachings to life. I liked the diversity of the sources and how Rabbi Shmuly combined insights from old thinkers and new thinkers alike to weave a unique modern commentary. This is a must read for anyone interested in how Jewish thought & ethics are still relevant in these turbulent times.

Rabbi Yanklowitz has an untouchable ability to shed the light of inspiration on thought from centuries ago.

Phenomenal book truly inporational. Highly recommended for anyone in social justice work.

We bought this book, planning retirement in 2-3 years. We know we want to get away from winter, but aren't sure exactly where to go. The book has a wide variety of cities and towns we never would have even thought of, and I like that. It does a good job of telling you what to expect as far as taxes and climate, also important. But, the majority of the individuals and couples they interviewed are professionals and executives, generally people who could afford to live most anywhere. There are a few who aren't, but not many. If you fall into the former category, this book is for you. If you want to know about golf courses and art galleries, you're good there too. But if you're more interested in how many *Mart stores are in the area, and an overview of crime and perhaps the median income, you're out of luck. The other thing I would like to have seen is a "Top 10" ranking, like top 10 beach communities, tax-friendly states, lowest costs of living, best healthcare, outdoor living etc. A picture or two of each place would have been great also. What I've done is made my own list of criteria and rated each of the places in the book that we might be remotely interested in on a scale of 1-10 for each item. When I'm done, we'll look at the highest scores and decide which of them to visit. All in all, I consider it a helpful tool, but it's by far not "the only guide I'll need" as it bills itself.

The commentary was like a sales pitch for each place - more like something that could have been written by the local chamber of commerce. I was hoping for something a lot more objective that discussed the pros and cons of each place, not just the happy stories of the delighted folks who had decided to live there. There is more valuable and relevant information online than in this book. A waste of money.

This book is a compilation of previously researched cities and towns. But, each one has recently acquired information. What makes it different from others is the range of information it has and the format in which it's presented. There are human interest stories that typify each of the 100 selections. They reflect people that have the same concerns and interests as many of us as we think about our lives after a lifetime of work. Their reasons for selecting these locales may be meaningful to you, too.Information included within a boxed inset (for each of the 100 places) covers the typical but, these as well:cost of living; housing costs; sales tax; sales tax exemptions; state income tax; estate tax; inheritance tax; property tax; homestead exemptions; religion, education, walk(ability) scores; health care; housing, etc.It should be easy to produce your own spread sheet, plugging in the numbers for locations that interest you for retirement. This is a comfortable, logical method for narrowing down potential places to visit in your quest to find a new town and a new home.

I like the updated version. Each example includes the climate, cost of living and housing, inheritance tax, estate and property tax, state inclome tax and sales tax, health facilities, etc. It includes things that most retirees would want to address. It is written like an interesting article about individuals/couples who relocated to that area and the positive aspects they found. Things to do and see in the area, festivals, events are included. Transporation is mentioned but people tell how easy it is to walk, ride bikes, etc. Even if you will not be relocating, I find it helpful for places to visit.

My husband and I are still struggling with where we might want to purchase our second home (eventually our only home) upon his retirement in a few years. This book offers no surprises and is your typical, straight-forward "where to retire" book. The authors clearly state "their book is geared towards today's busy Baby Boomers" as that group reaches retirement age. The book gears itself towards those who desire somewhat of an "active" retirement lifestyle, I guess. The book sections cities and towns off in several ways, alphabetically and alphabetically by state, to name a few. The authors also list areas by "Best Beach Town," "Best Arts Town," "Best Main Street Town," etc." to name a few. One nice feature is the book doesn't just focus on your typical Florida and Southwest USA towns/states, as do many books on retirement. The book covers viable "retirement" locales in almost every state in the USA except for most Great Plains States (Black Hills North Dakota, Missoula Montana are reviewed), most "tornado alley" states and the mid-west (Ann Arbor Michigan is reviewed). The authors cover lots of areas in the Pacific Northwest, which is a bit unusual for a book that reviews retirement areas. This is not your "typical" retirement book in the classic sense that best tax rates, lowest fixed income tax rates, inheritance tax laws, etc, are thoroughly covered (although each listed locale has a side box briefly covering such items). Not sure where the authors got their data from...through personal travels & interviews with others, I think (primarily).All-in-all this is a pretty good book with few surprises and little new information about the "best" places to retirement. Kinda light & fun reading...nothing too deep or heavy here.

Very good book; I would have liked a little more data about cultural events and crime rates in the Quick Facts area, but overall I found the information in this book to be very helpful. Once I decide upon the final potential destinations I will be considering for retirement, I'll look up additional information online.

I like this book as it has lots of information about great places to retire and what the climate, taxes, health care, housing, education, religions, and more. It has maps and lots of details regarding each community. I am very pleased with this book!

    Review

"Edith Hamilton retells the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths with a sure taste and scholarship that help to restore their quality as perennial and refreshing fables about human nature, including our own."―The New Yorker"No one in modern times has shown us more vividly than Edith Hamilton 'the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome.' Filtering the golden essence from the mass of classical literature, she proved how applicable to our daily lives are the humor and wisdom of more than 2,000 years ago."―New York Times

Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY, originally published in 1942, is one of two classic mythological summaries most readily available to us today. The other (and older of the two) is by Thomas Bulfinch; it was published in the early 19th century and is commonly called BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY (a merger of three works originally published separately as THE AGE OF FABLE, THE AGE OF CHIVALRY, and LEGENDS OF CHARLEMAGNE). Both authors present a summary overview of myths once widely taught but now generally neglected. Bulfinch is much more extensive and includes numerous legends not covered by Hamilton, but the coverage by both of the Greek and Roman myths (for which the two authors are most famous) makes for particularly interesting comparison. Some prefer Hamilton's treatment; others prefer Bulfinch's. I personally prefer Hamilton's consistent use of distinct Greek and Roman names rather than Bulfinch's frequent and occasionally confusing use of Roman names to identify Greek entities. But I generally enjoy Bulfinch's slightly old-fashioned style of storytelling over Hamilton's (though, all things considered, hers is quite fine). Hamilton's work is still under copyright, and it is published only by Little, Brown. Thus, it is more expensive than Bulfinch's which, being in the public domain, is easily obtainable online for free or in very inexpensive editions by numerous ebook publishers. Those who may own older paperback or hardcovered editions of Hamilton's work will discover the 2012 ebook replaces the magnificent artwork of Steele Savage with somewhat less majestic illustrations by Chris Wormell (though the list of illustration topics remains the same). The text remains unaltered, and the formatting is exquisite. There is an active TOC (here at the very end), but (disappointingly) no index in the ebook version. Overall, it is a very handsome ebook and a delight to read.It is hard to imagine retelling the great myths in a manner more concisely informative than rendered here by Hamilton. Critical reviewers who claim she is too difficult or too dry are certainly entitled to their opinions, but given the nature of the material and the purpose of this book, I would respectfully disagree with them. There is, of course, no substitute for reading the full-length originals from which these great tales have been culled and summarized, but this is by far a much more convenient way to initially encounter them; that is why this book has been (or, at least, once was) heavily used in public schools in conjunction with teaching these timeless stories.Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY belongs in the personal library of every literate person as an introduction to, summary of, and/or reminder of these Greek, Roman, and Norse myths. But for added insights and additional myths, I would encourage readers of it to also obtain and read BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY.

I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't discover Edith Hamilton sooner. I loved every moment of this book. It focuses mainly on Greek mythology, although there is a brief section on Norse mythology at the end. I appreciate that she lists her sources for each story at the beginning of the chapter and her telling of the these myths are easily read, but not over simplified and the result is highly enjoyable.

In grammar school I studied Greek mythology, and was mesmerized by the Odyssey and the Iliad. Soon other subjects came along that stole my attention. Fast-forward fifty years and I found myself curious to see if my old fascination and excitement about Greek mythology could be rekindled, and I once again I started slowly and tucked into Edith Hamilton's Mythology. I found this book to be as alive and vibrant as I remembered, but I'm thrilled to say that as an adult I appreciate it even more. It's mind-boggling that having been published in 1942, this is still one of the best interpretations around. One thing I hadn't remembered is that Ms. Hamilton's Mythology includes sections on Roman and Norse stories; I had no interest in them when I was younger and only middling interest in them now, but they're a happy find. This book stokes the imagination and invites further study of the subject. I bought the Kindle ebook and Kindle audiobook versions; both are outstanding. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars!

This 75th Anniversary Edition does not disappoint. My introduction to mythology happened more than 50 years ago when my librarian Aunt Louise gave me The Golden Treasury of Myths and Legends by Anne Terry White and Alice and Martin Provensen (a classic itself). I moved on to an early 60s edition of Edith Hamilton's Mythology, entranced with the family trees of the gods and using her description of the Underworld to make a model when I took Latin. Also became a fan of the D'Aulaires' mythology books. My interest and background in mythology have served me well as an English major, grad student, parent, school librarian, and lifelong heavy reader. Now retired, I'm taking a class at our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at North Carolina State University on mythology. I decided I needed to upgrade my old favorite. The 75th Anniversary edition is beautifully designed, a pleasure to read and hold. Illustrations include plates, page drawings, design motifs, and borders. Anyone with a longstanding or brand-new interest in Greek mythology will be dazzled. Highly recommended.

Classic text that was required reading in High School. Loved it then, but sadly I plastered my paperback with the names of girls I was dating at the time. The Kindle version is perfect - different illustrations than the book (I also have the hardcover) but just as good. Hamilton's prose style is borderline "quaint" but adds a nice personal touch. The lack of commas in places may require a couple reads of some sentences. Even so I highly recommend Mythology as it covers both Greek, Roman, along with teaser Norse mythology.

I have always loved Greek and Roman mythology, and have bought so many different books over the years trying to find a comprehensive, easy to read, well formatted version of the myths. This is by far the best collection that I have found yet. All previous collections have left me feeling disappointed. This is not a strict translation of the myths, but is a retelling of them in easy to read modern language. This collection is easy to read, covers all of the majors Greek and Roman myths, and is very logically laid out. I highly recommend.
