I gave this book 5 stars (a 10 if I could) as it was so well written that I could not put it down. This book left me in total peace as I read it. In this book Lena experiences sorrow, loneliness, rejection, love and happiness. This is a must read for anyone. I pray that the author will continue on with this book and take it a further in a second book.

I really enjoyed reading this book showing different ways of the Amish instead of just seeing them in one way I enjoyed all the characters in this book this is the first book that I have read from this Author I will be reading more from this author.

So enjoyed this book because the characters were so real in their lives of love, hurt and faith. Quick reading. Hope there will be another book written about these characters.

Karen Anna Vogel writes a good story; a little trouble with incomplete sentences but the storyline is good. I'm looking forward to more of her books.

Another God inspired work of literature. Amazing how love , prayer and communicating your feelings can be a blessing of growth.

A beautiful story. Being able to see the dir between the Amish was very interesting. Now on to book two!

This is another of those books that uses this genre to make a case for a different type of religious belief than that of the Amish. Portraying them as wrong about their approach to God and the bible, she has them all over the place about their way of life. I read Amish fiction for the romance and simple life and do not appreciate being preached to. Other readers may like it but at least should know what they are paying for.

Although the author is well able to tell a story, I feel the book was written more to push her religious views than to bless the reader with an enjoyable reading experience. Her judging of the stricter Amish is disturbing and depressing. I believe that she has misunderstood what readers of Amish fiction want...a relaxing escape, not a pedantic lecture. Sad.

As I learned from reading The Underground Railroad (one of my favorite books of 2016), Colson Whitehead is all about taking a genre that you think you know and turning it on its head. Zone One is a zombie novel, but it's not what we've come to expect from this sub-genre: it's a snarky satire that focuses its commentary more on modern society than innate humanity.In Whitehead's post-apocalyptic world, survival is re-branded by teams of overseers who recognized the importance of good marketing. Those who are still alive aren't called survivors, they're called "the American Phoenix." The camps and safe zones have names like "Babbling Brooks" and "Happy Acres" that make them sound more like suburban condominiums.Mark Spitz, the book's protagonist, is a mediocre man who thrives in this new world where he notes that "intellect and ingenuity and talent [are] as equally meaningless as stubbornness, cowardice, and stupidity." Here he has taken on the job of a "sweeper," tasked with clearing the streets of Manhattan of zombies.Even Whitehead's zombies are interesting. There are two different categories: the skels are your typical modern zombies, making up 99% of the infected. But then there's the remaining 1%, dubbed the stragglers, who become frozen in place repeating a mundane task until they're put out of their misery.There are so many cool ideas here, but unfortunately cool ideas don't make for a compelling story. As much as I appreciated the cleverness of Whitehead's post-apocalyptic world, I felt bored for the majority of this book. Not a lot happens. The tension is minimal. The prose is verbose.Zone One would have made an excellent short story. Whitehead is great writer with an enviable imagination. But that wasn't enough to carry this full-length novel.

This is an interesting but complicated read. The author is obviously talented and very intelligent, which is both good and bad. The good is that the story is challenging and engaging. It is written with enough detail that one becomes interested and invested in the main character, dubbed "Mark Spitz" by fellow survivors, and his current place in this universe as well as his harrowing back story. But the bad is that the author uses such a wide vocabulary that I found myself having to look up word meaning often as I read. Thank goodness Kindle has a ready dictionary at hand. My other issue was that the story jumped from "Mark's" present to memories and back with little warning. I got lost at times, especially if I had to interrupt my reading for something and then come back to it. It was a bit disorienting. For this reason it lost one star in the rating. The book is also basically one very long (as in the majority of the book) chapter and one chapter less in length. By the end the reader does get a full sense of just who this man is, his motivations, his cynicism at this point, and also the very, very bleak outlook most of the characters around him have. I recommend this book for those who like a challenging read and a break from the usual mindless drivel of most horror fiction. And this is really so much more than just horror fiction. Rather than insisting the reader come down to the level of the story, Mr. Whitehead insists the reader come up to the level of the fiction, which is a nice change of pace.

To be fair to readers, I need to say at the outset that although this novel technically fits in the Zombie Apocalypse genre, it really is something much more than that. Readers looking for an old-fashioned, gut-munching zombie adventure tale (and I enjoy those, too) will likely be disappointed, so please be advised. I try not to mislead anyone in my reviews, so I wanted to be clear on this. However, if you enjoy horror fiction that aspires to social commentary, political satire, and cultural critique, then this is a move you definitely don't want to miss. Think George Romero zombie films on politically radical steroids.The novel begins where so many zombie novels end… after the zombie pandemic has largely run its course, and surviving humans are now on the offensive, trying to simultaneously eradicate the remaining zombies and rebuild society. The protagonist, know only by the nickname Mark Spitz due to an anecdote I won't spoil here, is very much a self-proclaimed master of mediocrity. Before the zombie plague, he excelled at simply getting by in life… always square in the middle, always doing the bare minimum. But in new the post-plague world order, he finds that the qualities of merely getting by are the best one can have in this not-so-brave new world. Employed as a "sweeper"-- a somewhat-militarized combatant tasked with sweeping lower Manhattan of the remaining zombies with well-placed head shots--Mark serves as the novel's chronicler of the outbreak and the attempt to rebuild America (now called the American Phoenix) from the ashes of a near apocalypse.But Whitehead has larger targets than the zombies, as he deftly critiques the structural inequalities, rampant conspicuous consumption,crises of identity, and corporate hegemony of the 21st century U.S. In many ways, this novel is more similar to political horror novels like 1984, Brave New World, Beloved, and even Heart of Darkness than it is to mainstream zombie fiction. His writing is elegant, poetic… line after line of prose that leaps from the page with thick descriptions of the politics of everyday life. It's not an easy read, as the narrative twists and turns, looping back on itself through flashbacks and oral histories of Last Night (as the onset of the plague is described). If you are a fan of highly literate horror fiction… or just highly literate writing in general… then this is a novel not to be missed.

This is a simple story told with thoughtful language and style. Contemplative without melodrama, but still enough creepy action to satisfy your expectations of a good zombie tale. More literary than pulp, well-crafted, and short; if you're looking for a quick, fun read that won't make you roll your eyes in mortification, I recommend giving this a try.

Where was the enthusiasm in the Federal government to stimulate this paradigm shift in automobile propulsion technology?What happened to America in the 70's that caused defeat of the development of the turbine car to be snatched from the jaws of victory? The Federal congress, the regulatory agencies, and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries were just a few of the factors that turned this dream into a debacle. The author of this book, Steve Lehto, did an excellent job of chronicling this part of American automotive history. His style of writing and organization of the subject matter makes this book totally enjoyable reading.

This book needed to be written - I am very glad that Steve has finished it and that he did such a great job on writing it.Steve Lehto is a master of making history into a readable and interesting dialog with the reader. I knew most of the story from my own research and acquaintance with many of the contributors before Steve started. So when I say I found the book extremely well written and able to capture and hold my attention, which means it is just plain good! Bravo Steve for giving the world a record in print of not only the unique cars but the people who created then and had the chance to drive them.After I received my copy I found it very hard to put down. I knew how it ended and as I already knew most of the story from my own research but the chronological and quickly moving manner Mr. Lehto put the whole book together made it an absolute joy to read and remember.If you count yourself a "gear head" of any age and love to read a lot of "inside" information about technology and vehicles in particular, you must read this book! If you enjoy stories about people who were dedicated engineers, visionary designers and creative dreamers, you need to read this book!History can be boring and dry or it can come alive, Steve has brought life back to a story that should have been told so our children and grandchildren can know that the 60's were not only about peace protests, the Viet Nam war, assassinations and bad corporations. Mr. Lehto shows that innovation and concern for the future was a common theme running through the people who wanted to see the piston engine replaced by an exciting and wonderful engine - the turbine.I am the son of one of the 203 users and drove one of the Chrysler/Ghia turbine cars in 1965.

Steve Lehto's book on the Chrysler Turbine brought back memories of my teen years. I turned 16 in 1964, so this story took place when I was really car crazy. Steve Lehto captures the intensity of the dreams of that era. I recall the trips to the store to by the latest car magazines, Road & Track, Car and Driver, Motor Trend. It was all good. The Chrysler Turbine's looks were Elwood Engel's idea (formerly a Ford designer whose great legacy included the 61 Lincoln Continental and the 4 seat Thunderbird. I never got to see the Chrysler Turbine in person.Lehto's account of the Chyrsler Turbine captures how the dreams of the early 1960's in so many other ways had turned to crap by 1966. Most of the downfall came as a result of corporate financial and government political bungling. Lehto captures in a snapshot what happened. There is plenty of irony here: Chrysler in the 1960's was a company run by accountants that nonetheless was going broke. The government bureaucrats who were supposedly trying to undo the environmental damage cause by the automobile kept changing the rules such that the engineers trying to fix the problems were running around in circles.The pictures of the car are dazzling. The Chrysler Turbine looks so much better than the cars of today. Steve Lehto's book Chrysler's Turbine Car is a trip back to the future.

Planet Earth was first photographed from space more than 30 years ago by the astronauts of the Apollo mission. Since then a variety of satellites have given us supernatural eyes in space. With sophisticated sensors we can "see" through clouds, observe the surface features on the ocean floor, and selectively image temperature, water vapor, ocean currents, and even patterns of ancient river systems now buried beneath the sand of the Sahara Desert. New technology has permitted us to penetrate deep into the interior of our planet and X ray its internal structure. We can now "see" hot material in the interior moving in huge convection cells, creating ocean basins, volcanic islands, and mountain systems. With this era of enlightenment comes an increased awareness of how our planet is continually changing and a fresh awareness of how fragile it is. Earth is a finite sphere with limited resources, so it is impossible for the population to grow indefinitely. We may find more oil, gas, and coal by improved detection methods, yet nature requires more than a million years to concentrate the oil now consumed in only one year. We have created nuclear waste, yet are unsure how to dispose of it safely. What can we do about the fact that rivers today transport more agricultural and industrial waste than natural sediment? Is greenhouse heating real? The answers to these questions can be found only if we understand Earth's dynamic systems with their many interdependent and interconnected components. It is written for students taking their first college course in physical geology at both two- and four-year schools. This Edition This book was significantly revised to make it a more effective learning tool. We have reinforced the themes of the book by dividing it into four parts. In Part I, we discuss Earth's materials and how they are created by geologic systems. In Part II, we discuss the hydrologic system by examining subsystems chapter by chapter. Plate tectonics is the theme of Part IV, with separate chapters on divergent, transform, and convergent boundaries, as well as mantle plumes—the subsystems of the tectonic system. In Part IV, we look back and apply the principles learned to see how Earth's resources formed and just how different our home in space is when compared with other planets. The focus on the hydrologic and tectonic systems is captured in the cover illustrations, which symbolize the energy sources—heat from the Sun and heat from Earth's interior—that drive our dynamic planet. Our major new thrust is the introduction of a series of essays that illustrate the scientific method. We call these summary messages Geologic, as we attempt to show the logic behind using simple observations to come to important conclusions about the way Earth works. We have designed new illustrations to take students from "seeing" to "understanding." The State of the Art sections have been retained. We attempt to distill the important techniques used in modern geology into a few words and couple them with some of the most spectacular and informative images available today. In these short essays, we show how geologists come to understand the world around us, emphasizing not just "what we know" but "how we know" it as well. We strive to present a new perspective in visualizing geology by using panoramic photographs of the landscape. Panoramic photographs begin each chapter and provide the student with a visual summary of the theme of the chapter. All chapters were updated and checked for accuracy. Special attention was focused on improving the illustrations so that the student can more fully experience the excitement and satisfaction of visualizing and understanding geology. We have traveled over much of North America and many other parts of the world—including Brazil, Antarctica, Iceland, Mexico, China, Tibet, Oman—to take photographs specifically for this book. Photographs not otherwise credited were taken by W Kenneth Hamblin. An important element in this edition is the use of new digital topographic maps. The recent release of new data on seafloor and continental topography by defense and other governmental agencies has opened a new window through which we can see the continents and seafloor in a more accurate and detailed fashion than ever before. The author of this book was approached a few years ago by the publisher to make a new edition of the book. But rather than making another unneeded edition to bring the publisher more profits the author decided to make the entire book available online. You can find this book for free by googling the title. I liked it enough that I bought a cheap hard copy. Overall this is an excellent book on geology and is filled with lots of information, illustrations, and explanations. It has a good glossary, and index which makes looking up topics quick and easy.Update: It looks like the original author Dr. Hamblin has since passed away and this book is now once again being published under the new name Dynamic Earth. Unfortunately, this also means that the free website which Dr. Hamblin had setup is no longer available. However, I am glad to see this book continue to be published since it is an excellent of not the best introduction to college level geology.

I'm kind of an amateur geology junkie. I have many geology textbooks that I read because the subject interests me. (I am a nurse. I have a BA and two Masters in but they are in the biological sciences and in education.) This is my favorite geology textbook by far. The illustrations and photographs are beautiful and detailed. They really do provide a different way to learn the text, one that complements the text but is strictly visual. This book has many wonderful and detailed plate maps, ocean floor and continental surface maps with geological ages noted. You can easily see how mountain ranges on different continents were once together. The text itself is clear and leads you point by point toward the concept without a lot of effort. It's highly readable and if I were a student, this is the one I would want to "have" to read. A surprising number of other textbooks use circular definitions; they explain terms using the term in the explanation, which is of no use whatsoever. It's really surprising how often that is done. I didn't find it much in this text. The authors are very detailed in the way they cover each subject. There are several chapters on plate tectonics, for example, instead of just one long broad explanation in one chapter. There are several chapters on the hydrologic cycle, entire chapters on weathering, glaciers, rivers, etc. Each rock type has a chapter and an introductory chapter on Minerals. Really by far my favorite text.

I have referred to this book several times. Useful for introductory and intermediate work.

Haven't used it much, but I did look through it. Seems excellent value for money. Just that these days, like, doah, it's a book. When I'm somewhere else, it's quicker to google.

Extremely disappointed by the adult humor. This book does not belong on school library shelves like the listing suggested. Although there is a lot of fun in this book, it is for adult eyes only and should be used with discretion. Had to return this gift I had planned on giving.

I agree with Seattle Reader this is a fun read but I wouldn't use the items in a conversation without first verifying them someplace else. for example the story about the Clinton administration people removing W from keyboards is made up. check snoopes. Other items seem to be generalities at best, for example Hitler receiving 10,000 birthday cards on his 45th birthday.What is a "fact"?

a rather quick read. The facts are just stated. Four to a page. To access their sources you need to log onto QI.com and go to the sources page, type in the page number and see the links. There are errors scattered throughout .The fact that 20 million people died in the Taiping Rebellion was 10% of the world's population should have set off bells with the Elves. Even at the high estimate of 30 million dead would mean a grand total population of 300 million people when the current population guesstimate is closer to 1.6 Billion. 1.5%...10%... pretty...close? No.

I bought this for my 10 year-old grandson. However, his 34 year-old mother could not put it down, and she kept interrupting our conversation with new found facts.

Got this for a friend for Christmas and he loves it. It is hard to put down and the vast majority of facts from this book are fascinating, believe it or not. I feel like someone (or a group of people) had to go on an all-out quest in order to attain the sacred knowledge contained in this tome. You will not be disappointed with this book.

I like books like this. It was interesting as I said, I like to call these books "bathroom books".

Leave this book on the coffee table. Pick it up while the TV commercial is on or when you happen to have a minute to sit down....Open to any page...start reading. You have absolutely no idea how many amazing....some ridiculous...ideas you'll read. Then you may not want to put the book down.

At first it was interesting, but the more I read, the more errors I noticed, and by the end my mindset was, "Oh, Yeah, interesting but your credibility is gone. I would hesitate to use any of these "facts" in a conversation with someone who knows what they are talking about.

About the Author

Maly Siri is a painter and an illustrator. She was born in France in 1985. After graduating from the Émile Cohl School of Lyon in 2006, she published comics and illustrations for Akileos, Dupuis, Le Lombard (French publishing houses). Touched by aesthetics and elegance of a universe that has been polished by the patina of time, Maly found herself in a pictorial genre in harmony with her tastes and passions: the pin-up girl. In 2009, she moved in Montreal, where her international "pin-up artist" career took off: as requested by the British high fashion house Vivienne Westwood, she designs, in 2010, the muse of perfume Naughty Alice. Then the brand Playboy offers her to give life to two new muses for Play It Pin-up and perfume Play It Sexy, respectively in 2013 and 2014. In this book, she pays tribute to two of her models: Bettie Page and Dita Von Teese

The quality of this book is fantastic. Rather than a simple collection of Maly Siri's wonderful pinup girl art, it is a full fledged exploration of her creativity, inspiration, and vision. It gives insight into the pinup world and quite honestly, despite a fascination with pinup art that has lasted me a lifetime, gave me a few new perspectives to consider.The quality of the book itself is top notch and leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. It is beautiful and artful. It is a two sided book and within the pages are two different themes. One side of the book gives you a study on "good girl" pinups. The "Gil Elvgrinesque" girls - pretty & innocent but inadvertently giving a peek of stocking & garter due to some mishap. The opposite side, or what is actually the second book, focuses on the "bad girls". The girl who wields her beauty and sexual energy like a power and is comfortable being herself, unleashed by convention or societal norms. I have to admit this cover is my favorite of the two but not necessarily any better. I just prefer the design.I assure any other buyer that this book it well worth your time and you will enjoy the experience of reading it greatly.

Amazing! My favorite artist for sure. Wish her original art was not so expensive so I could have a painting in my home. This book sits right on my coffee table for guest to see. :)

This is a very different style of pin-up art and it's magnificently done. The book is unique in the good girl/bad girl format in that it's printed upside down halfway through, so, when you go from cheesecake cute and innocent to Bettie Page and John Willie-style paintings, the book flips around like it's an entirely separate volume - very clever.Her style of painting is quite unique. She takes very retro pin-up, voyeur, and fetish-style artwork and incorporates it into seemingly vintage advertisements, magazine covers, advertising posters, magazine ads from old detective magazines, things like that, to make the artwork seem like it's something torn from the past, but yet, it's not. This is an entirely different approach to this type of work and she's nailed it with this book.If you like pin-up art, paintings of beautiful women, cheesecake pin-ups or vamp dominatrix-style retro ladies of the forties and fifties, you're going to like this book. And aside from that, it's a nice heavy book with excellent printing quality. You can't go wrong with this one, buy the hard cover copy while it's still available!

I got it as a present, I really don't read the book as it has more drawings than reading, which is great because I wanted for that! Great pinup art
