When you find the tree you're looking for, this guide has good information on trees. But, finding what you're looking for is not so easy. The intro says that gymnosperms (conifers) are covered first, then angiosperms. That's fine, but there is no info at all as to how things are arranged inside of those sections. (It's almost as if something were cut from the intro, as it starts out "The guide is organized in several ways" but then only describes the major breakdown. But this means if I see a tree I want to identify, I have to look through many pages to find what I'm looking for. It really needs better organization within the major sections.

Almost worthless. Just a semi alphabetical listing of general trees, no way to look up what tree you are trying to identify - you have to go page by page until maybe the limited description/picture maybe matches somewhat of the leaf or tree you are hoping to identify.

I bought this as a gift for a friend. She loves it! It's very detailed and the pictures are beautiful. I plan to buy other Nat Geo booklets for her.

    Great Book

A perfect book for this non-specialist. Much useful information about identification reduced to a few key words. And small enough to carry in a field pack.

Perfect guide for identifying strange trees.

Quite comprehensive and detailed for the small format it is in. OTOH, it is a small, short book and the content is limited. However, I'm quite pleased and have already made good use of the guide.

This is a pocket size book and you carry it with you as you wonder the trails It is in color, too.

I originally greeted this book with a great deal of skepticism. I had never seen an episode of “The Apprentice,” Donald Trump’s reality TV show that first made Omarosa famous, but I knew that she played the villain on that show and was a longtime champion of Trump before turning 180 degrees and penning this behind-the-scenes book. If Sarah Huckabee Sanders had a shred of credibility herself, I could almost believe her when she repeated the official White House line that dismissed Omarosa’s book as an act of vengeance by a disgruntled employee. (Although I’ve always had a problem with the term “disgruntled employee” used to discredit anything anyone ever says about someone they formerly worked for, as if no employer could ever do anything reprehensible.) But I knew that the book irked Trump, and as the ancient saying goes, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” so I gave it a read.I was surprised by how measured and convincing the author is in telling the story of her life, her upbringing, how she came to be a fervent admirer of Trump, and how she later came to be completely disillusioned. I can understand why she was reluctant to admit Trump’s shortcomings to herself, after he had done so much for her career, and her initial loyalty is, in my opinion, rather admirable. For my own part, I have always given the benefit of the doubt to someone who has been helpful and kind to me if a third party expresses a grievance against them. I’m prone to believe the evidence of my own experience more than something I only have someone else’s word for. And Omarosa, with breathtaking thoroughness, methodically relates the endless series of incidents she first tried to ignore or rationalize before realizing that something was seriously wrong. The many Trump trolls who are going on Amazon to give this book one-star ratings and slamming it as being “total lies” (an ironic charge considering their own cult leader) have obviously not read the book. Omarosa does not indulge in extensive speculation or idle gossip; virtually every statement or action of Trump’s that destroyed her loyalty to him is something he actually tweeted or said in a televised interview; she doesn’t indulge in he said/she said rumors. What’s most revelatory aren’t the things we didn’t already know, but rather how she recounts the ones we’re familiar with but from the unique perspective of someone who was on the inside looking out. And as has been revealed in numerous TV interviews, she has thoroughly documented everything she reports, possessing hundreds of audio tapes, emails, documents, and even videos of her time in the White House. (The book begins with an astonishing example in her account of her firing by John Kelly.) If you’re going to try to discredit the book, you’re going to need more than knee-jerk name-calling. Perhaps, and the reader has no way of knowing this, she has withheld information that would be damaging to her, but considering the smear campaign launched against her by the White House, one would think that anything really negative about her tenure would have been dredged up by now. And what she does tell us rings with complete authenticity.I was surprised at how sympathetic her observations on Melania are, and after reading her interpretation of numerous events made famous on the Internet, I now question the thoroughly negative gold-digger image I’d previously had. And the entire book ends on a surprisingly positive and optimistic note, which is the one thing in Unhinged I found unconvincing. But for all of our sakes, I hope she’s right.

I have just finished reading Omarosa's book. She comes across to me as self-serving, having attached herself to Mr. Trumpand using her association with him to further her own interests. Having said that, however, I add good for her! Her own interests include doing good things for other black people, especially students in historically black colleges. She is very smart, and clearly good at manipulating people and situations to her advantage. As she pointed out, when these traits are identified in white men especially in the business world and in politics, they are considered positive. In black women it is a different story. Mr. Trump is getting a good dose of well-deserved comeuppance from her. No, she did not reveal much of significance that we do not already know about Mr. Trump's personality, character, leadership, intelligence, and the character of people with which he chooses to surround himself and rely on for guidance, but I found it valuable to hear yet another testimony on these issues from someone who has known Mr. Trump for many years. I hope others continue to speak out and tell the world about what a disaster this man is as our leader. Prominent take-aways from this book are:Mr. Trump's overwhelming malignant narcissism. He always spins every situation such that he is at the center of it.His utter lack of loyalty to people from whom he demands complete loyalty. His utter and complete disregard for the truth. He sees the world as he would like it to be, rather than how it actually is.His physical, intellectual and emotional decline over the period of 15 years. It is said that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. I would say that we all live in glass houses. None of us is perfect. We all have our closet skeletons and failings. Realizing that, we should be tolerant of other people's failings. But we need to come together and protect each other when stones start flying fast and furiously and put us all in danger.

I bought this book in the beginning as a "protest buy". Now I can't put it down. This is an extremely fascinating woman who has a hell of a story to tell. She writes in a very calm and casual way and when she does throw out some tidbits, it's done in a respectful and thoughtful manner. I judged her in the past rather negatively but now feel a connection with her which frankly surprises me. For the record I have never seen her on any Trump reality shows as i never cared for him. This is an excellent and classy book and i have a feeling the author is going to land on her feet with no problem after her tenure with Trump....unlike some others. Highly recommend!

Whether or not you think you like, or dislike, the author from image portrayed on The Apprentice, I found Omarosa's book to be an enjoyable read. The real treat here is that she is quite open about her history with "TrumpWorld" as she calls it in the book. She acknowledges her own self-interested motives, and blind spots. It's a story that starts with a starry eyed younger Omarosa, and ends with her freedom from the 'TrumpWorld cult'. Along the way she becomes increasingly aware that her former mentor, friend, and idol, has no empathy for others, is narcissistic to an extreme, does not read or intake new information unless it's on a favored cable TV channel, and she also sees signs of dementia-like behavior leaving her wondering what, if anything, she can do as an insider. If nothing else, it's worth a read for the timeline of the most controversial events during and after the 2016 election, from the perspective of someone inside.

I was pleased to find this account well written and even handed. Sadly it pulls the curtain back to unveil the unraveling of a country coming apart at it's core and the singular man responsible in tandem with it. This author surprised me.

I really enjoy reading travel memoirs, or books by people who have lived in other countries for a while. While some of the book was interesting, I found the author very annoying. She comes across as spoiled and entitled. She fails to finish her commitment to teach in Nepal, and complains about her host families asking for things, people wanting to know how to get to the US, etc.

Notes of a Naïve Traveler – review blurbThis on-site experience is an entertaining read for both armchair travelers and future trekkers.Having read Jennifer Alderson’s first two well-written and entertaining novels, my expectations were high for Notes of a Naïve Traveler. I was not disappointed. This uniquely engaging account of living and teaching in Nepal is a feast for the senses. Jennifer shares her personal account on the sights, smells, and tastes of Nepal and Thailand. Likewise, she allows the reader into her emotional journey. Her animated character sketches add to the enjoyable read. I've never read a "travel memoir" where I keep turning the pages to read about what happens next; this book is the first. Jennifer Alderson’s descriptions, writing style, and personality all make this a great read. Five Stars!

For anyone who has never traveled to a country whose culture is different from your own, you don't know what you are missing. It's an incredible experience, as this journey through Nepal and Thailand portrays. The author's story is whimsical and at times flirting with danger. For those who have traveled, it's the trip home that actually is more of a culture-shock, than the places visited. Travelers expect and anticipate differences, but once experienced, we look at our own culture with entirely new eyes. This book gives you that look at Nepal and Thailand, and I recommend it for anyone thinking about taking a trip ... anywhere.

Reading Notes of a Naive Traveler, I felt like I was meeting up with a friend as she undertook the trip of a lifetime - a friend who happens to be observant and thoughtful.

This was fun, enlightening reading during my flight to Kathmandu. Recommended reading if you are planning on visiting Nepal and want a down-to-earth perspective.

In this phase of my life when time is scarce travel becomes the casualty, but thanks to the eloquent and detailed ticket that authors like Jennifer Alderson buy on our behalf, along we can go for the ride into the most exciting, uncomfortable, frustrating and exhilarating backwaters of our planet -- without the need to risk our digestive system on the questionable water and dubious plumbing.I had the advantage of having traveled to Thailand some years ago, so that with more than half the book in the Himalayas and the balance in my familiarity, I was able to identify strongly with that part-2 of the travelogue and so set a gauge for me to sense how accurately she captures the spirit of a place.I am happy to say that my experience aligns precisely with how she characterized Thailand; I have confidence then that I can fully trust her opinions from the Himalaya."Notes..." is a wonderfully engaging companion that took me to the Himalaya a place I'd love to someday see but am unlikely to ever reach. It did more than send me down the well worn path of Jane or Joe tourist, instead, it gave me an in depth view into the lives or ordinary folk I'd pass on the street of a backwater but likely learn nothing about. To Jennifer then I say "thank you!" This is a rare gift indeed.Keep traveling for me and us.

This is quite a short book, written in semi-diary format, partly in emails, about the author's travels in 1999. The then 26-year-old Jennifer plunges in at the deep end, living first with a Nepali family, trekking around the country, then teaching Nepali children, after which she hits the tourist trail in Thailand. This book would be most useful as a guidebook for those hoping to travel to Nepal, as it certainly paints a realistic picture; any traveller with whimsical dreams of entering a spiritual heaven as soon as they get off the plane should read the account of Thamel, of the families who assume Westerners are fair game, and of the bloody temple sacrifices ~ the lunch of goat's blood will stay with me, I think...I grew to like Jennifer more and more as the book went on (important when reading a memoir!), especially when she described the father of one of her Nepali families as 'kind of a schmuck' and the son as a 'little s***' - I have a fondness for those who dare to tell it like it is! Her youthful enthusiasm is charming - everything is 'amazing', 'gorgeous', 'incredible', etc, though now and again I felt I would have liked to read about the place as seen through more mature eyes. The most interesting parts of the book, for me, were her observations about the day to day habits and culture of the Nepalis and just little incidents that happened. Her 'characters' really jumped off the page.On to Thailand, and Jennifer experiences the westernised tourist route of the famous Khao San Road and rejects it for more of the 'real' Thailand, though she was disappointed that the hill tribes lived not in mud huts but in shacks with corrugated tin rooves, with motorbikes and trucks parked outside, and that the caves where the Buddhist monks worked were strewn with electric cables. Generally, though, her time in Thailand sounded so wonderful it almost made me whimper with longing.I'd say that anyone who is thinking of visiting these countries, Nepal in particular, should take time to read this warts-and-all account, especially if they're signing up for the volunteer work that entails being placed with a family. Jen comes across as a very open-minded and non-egotistical sort of person; maybe why she felt like a fish out of water in the working world of Seattle, and wanted to experience different lifestyles. I'd definitely read more about her travels; I liked the conversational tone of this book very much. There are pictures, too ~ always a plus, with a travel guide!

Bestselling author Jack Rosewood does not disappoint with this book with all of the surprises in it. This really was one of those "hard to put down" books and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.It's an insightful and graphically detailed account of some of the most horrific real life crimes. In fact, while reading yet another of Jack Rosewoods books (with Rebecca Lo), I just had to keep turning the pages yet again. Not necessarily because it's all that enjoyable in any way, shape or form, to delve a little too deeply into the malefic minds of such murderous individuals, but because I sincerely believe that most people are fascinated in one way or another by serial killers. Perhaps it’s the human morbid fascination with death. I’m not exactly sure. However, maybe it just astounds the average person as to how depraved another individual can be.The book delves deeply into some of the worst homicides, mass killings, hate crimes, spree killings and serial killings or serial killer captures across the United States in 2016. However, even if you are a seasoned campaigner of true crime, Homicide & True Crime Stories of 2016 will surely raise more than a few hairs on the back of your neck. It was a good read and the author gave a perspective to these horrific crimes that was both fascinating and intriguing. This was one of the better true crime books that I have read recently.I would highly recommend this read to all fans of the true crime genre. I’m also a big fan of Jack Rosewood so it’s another 5 Stars from me. Well done again!

Here is another amazing book from Jack. This book was different than the most books I have read from the author. In a very good way. First, it was much longer and it had many crimes that I do remember happening. It was like he was reporting the news, more details than what a newspaper would tell us. It also had many current events, which made me feel like I was reading crimes that actually happened near and far to me. It is the "True Crimes of 2016", after all. I loved the book very much. Now, I think it would be great if we get a follow up on these scumbags, if possible, to know that they get what they deserve. I would love to read that. I am left to wonder on so many of these horrific crimes,as we all are, just what their punishment is. I hope they don't die a natural death, that is way too good for them. Far too good, many people would love to see the end of them, but, not that way. God has a plan! I hope to read the outcome, then there are so many cases for the author to follow. But, I know, Jack, he can do it. He is such a great author who never stops writing. I have a lot of confidence in him.

This book highlights many of the high profile crimes that occurred both in the US and internationally in 2016. It gives a detailed description of what happened and each victim in the case. It covers many cases, including the Gregory Green family murders, The Pulse nightclub massacre, the Cascade Mall murders, the Victoria Martens horrific abuse/murder and so many others. I had forgotten how many horrible acts of murder happened last year. OK, all acts of murder are horrible, but these are ones that mostly had more than one victim (several mass murders), horrific mind-numbing crimes that make you hate humans. This book is a good summary of these crimes, that most people know about even if they are not into true crime. The book is well written and well researched. I do recommend it. I loved it.

Jack Rosewood's Homicide & True Crime Stories of 2016 is a good way to catch up on the violent crimes that occurred in the U.S and abroad for almost the entire year. 2016 was a pretty violent year, and it isn't even over yet! Broken down by months, the cases are described, but with limited information, and then current statuses are given if possible. Since most of the cases are still awaiting trial, there isn't the in-depth research, analysis, explanation and interviews that are seen in Rosewood's other works. The book does its job as a summary of the year in violent crime, but including December would make it more complete, a true year in review.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was very well written and it focuses on crimes that were committed in 2016, from January to the end of the year. This is the first book I have seen him write that is in chronological order. Jack Rosewood, as always, did an amazing job with researching the people, places, and things that were affected by tragedy during this particular decade. I am truly looking forward to seeing what is in store for 2017. Anything by this writer I can safely, without a doubt, recommend

I like the style of writing Mr. Rosewood takes on his non fiction novels. He seems to research information from a lot of resources to write his novels , this makes a more accurate & detailed read.Another reason I enjoy his true crime novels is he writes about criminals that one doesn't always read or hear about. Most true crime readers know of the Ted Bundy , or John Gacy ,etc.. But it's just as interesting to read about the not so famous or unheard of crimes as well.I read a lot of true crime novels , & he is an author I enjoy immensely, I will continue to read his work.

In this informative true crime exposé of 2016 major crimes, one gets a close eye-view of just how barbaric some crimes exist. Each new year, don't we all wish for peace and less crimes/attacks on others? It just doesn't happen. These stories are chilling and some have never made it to our media. The author has done his research to share some little known facts to the public. He does not make up these stories. Jack Rosewood provides good information, however, a little better proofreading could make it better. Regardless, I highly recommend.

This book covers all the meridians I need to know for my Acupressure and Shiatsu classes. The meridians in the book go in order of the circuits and elements so you know which meridian is next and basically where to look for them if you know the order. That is very helpful. It includes the number of points on each Meridian, a description, location and indication for use of each point which is an awesome bonus! I have to memorize the 12 meridians plus GV and CV meridians for school and this has been very helpful. Thank you!! :)

I am interested in acupressure: tapping, pressing, slapping those points.I thought that this might be a good reference. It turns out that this kind of book exploits Kindle's weaknesses really well. It's difficult to flip through a Kindle book just browsing and some diagrams are really tiny. I wanted to be able to use the small HTML tag on tiny, maybe twice, but this page won't let me.

This book gives a great guide to someone who is training to become an acupuncturist. This reference text is great for clinical practice as a reminder of where certain points are, as well as what conditions the reference points are designed to treat. I would recommend this book to acupuncture students, and licensed practitioners alike. The only problem is the lack of an index page, which is why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

lack of research and individual experience.__ Just general info-source.__. the author copied, re-wrote, and reduced from various major text-book.

Neat book. Hard to believe this knowledge was practiced thousands of years ago. Interesting that conditions treated by acupuncture and where the needles go.

a resource guide for .99 cents is as worthless as you might think.save a dollar and put it toward a real book

good charts and information. would recommend to anyone wanting to learn or refer to meridian points.

    Ok for starters.

Featured Recipe from Vegetable Literacy: Ivory Carrot Soup with a Fine Dice of Orange Carrots Serves 4-6 Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 pound white carrots, scrubbed and thinly sliced 1 tablespoon raw white rice Sea salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 thyme sprig 4 cups water or light chicken stock Few tablespoons finely diced orange carrots and/or other colored carrots Freshly ground pepper About 1 tablespoon minced fine green carrot tops Directions Warm the butter and oil in a soup pot and add the onion, white carrots, rice, 1 teaspoon salt, and the sugar and thyme. Cook over medium heat for several minutes, turning everything occasionally. Add 1 cup of the water, cover, turn down the heat, and cook while you heat the remaining 3 cups water. When the water is hot, add it to the pot, cover, and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. While the soup is cooking, cook the diced carrots in salted boiling water for about 3 minutes and then drain. When ready, let cool slightly, then remove and discard the thyme sprig. Puree the soup until smooth in a blender. Taste for salt and season with the pepper. Reheat if it has cooled. Ladle the soup into bowls, scatter the diced carrots and carrot tops over each serving, and serve. Featured Recipe from Vegetable Literacy: Peas with Baked Ricotta and Bread Crumbs Serves 2 Ingredients Olive oil 1 cup high-quality ricotta cheese, such as hand-dipped full-fat ricotta 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh bread crumbs 4 teaspoons butter 2 large shallots or 1/2 small onion, finely diced (about 1/3 cup) 5 small sage leaves, minced (about 1 1/2 teaspoons) 1 1/2 pounds pod peas, shucked (about 1 cup) Grated zest of 1 lemon Sea salt and freshly ground pepper Chunk of Parmesan cheese, for grating Directions Heat the oven to 375°F. Lightly oil a small baking dish; a round Spanish earthenware dish about 6 inches across is perfect for this amount. If your ricotta is wet and milky, drain it first by putting it in a colander and pressing out the excess liquid. Pack the ricotta into the dish, drizzle a little olive oil over the surface, and bake 20 minutes or until the cheese has begun to set and brown on top. Cover the surface with the bread crumbs and continue to bake until the bread crumbs are browned and crisp, another 10 minutes. (The amount of time it takes for ricotta cheese to bake until set can vary tremendously, so it may well take longer than the times given here, especially if it wasn’t drained.) When the cheese is finished baking, heat the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. When the butter foams, add the shallots and sage and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the peas, 1/2 cup water, and the lemon zest. Simmer until the peas are bright green and tender; the time will vary, but it should be 3 to 5 minutes. Whatever you do, don’t let them turn gray. Season with salt and a little freshly ground pepper, not too much. Divide the ricotta between 2 plates. Spoon the peas over the cheese. Grate some Parmesan over all and enjoy while warm. With Pasta: Cook 1 cup or so pasta shells in boiling, salted water. Drain and toss them with the peas, cooked as above, and then with the ricotta. The peas nestle in the pasta, like little green pearls.

*Starred Review* Committed vegetarians will cheer over another book from the hands of Madison. One of the nation’s best-known vegetarian cooks, Madison has practiced her craft both at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse and her own restaurant. Comprehensive and exhaustive, this new cookbook surveys the world of edible plant products in rigorous scientific groupings. Both text and color photographs educate readers to discover correlations and kinships and to explore how recipes adapt to encompass related ingredients. All of the nightshade family—eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers—appear together. A sandwich of spinach, caramelized onions, and roasted peppers neighbors a sort of casserole assembled from little-known quelites (lamb’s quarters) and mushrooms layered with corn tortillas. Madison introduces even more curious vegetables, such as fourwing saltbush. Although most recipes fall into the vegan category, there are plenty of dairy products and eggs to broaden recipes’ appeal. Madison herself confesses partiality to tomatoes baked in cream. A necessary addition for both reference and circulating collections. --Mark Knoblauch

If you have created a vegetable garden, and worked it even just one year or worked it more years than you care to count, you will be hooked on this book by the second page of the introduction. It contains a wealth of information; so much information, that you should not wait for your local library to get a copy: You need it NOW, and you will refer to it way too often to have to rely on the library's copy. If you are considering putting in your first vegetable garden, or if you often buy from a farmers' market or a local produce stand, you need to order this book, too. You will love it and, not only will you cook its recipes; you will be able to create your own favorites from all the tips included. If you buy your produce from the grocery store, you will find a lot of great recipes and a lot of information on unfamiliar edible plants, grains, grasses, herbs, beans and vegetables. But (I'd roughly estimate that) a fifth of the information provided will not be of value to the grocery-store-buyer, since the book provides information on varieties available and how to make use of all parts of the plant: From seedlings that you weed out, to leaf tops of edible roots, to roots of edible tops, to bolted stems and flowers, etc. In other words, parts of the plant that grocery-store-buyers don't often see. But, I'd bet good money that anyone who reads this book and doesn't have a garden, will be hurriedly searching for a sunny piece of earth in which to pitch a shovel!I won't go into the great information that you can find by reading this product page on Amazon. Definitely take advantage of the "Look Inside" feature. And definitely take a look at Deborah Madison's other published books. I find it a waste of space to list chapters and covered topics and ingredients in a review when it's all there in the "Look Inside".Deborah Madison has been writing quality cook books for ages. It was her book Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone that helped me convince the men in my family that they were not going to die if there wasn't meat on the dinner plate (that was back in the 1990s). But the point I'm trying to make is this: Madison has vast experience with veggies, grains, grasses, herbs, and beans. She has the necessary expertise, writing style and refined taste buds to put together a valuable and worthwhile cook book. What may not be obvious by browsing through the Contents and Index pages:--Besides the main star ingredient, other ingredients that flavor the recipes are not hard to locate. They are not necessarily limited to everyday ingredients with which we are all familiar: For instance, if you don't already know ghee and miso paste, you will be introduced to it in some of these recipes.--For most of the plants, you will find what I call a "food thesaurus" listing or section; "good companions" is what Madison calls them. You will have to remember those "companions" yourself, because they are not listed in the index.--You won't find recipes where the featured vegetable is NOT the primary flavor. In other words, you won't find chicken, salmon, sausage recipes with accompanying veggies and herbs or sauces made of the highlighted veggie or herb. You might find fish and meats mentioned in the "Good Companions" listed, but, again, you won't find them listed in the index.--This is not a vegan book: There are eggs, butter, cream and such. Actually, there are some very nice egg recipes. We've tried the egg salad with tarragon (I used Mexican tarragon, because that's what grows in my Southern garden and eggs from our own hens.)--This is NOT a how-to-garden book. Although it does list some seed recommendations.--This is NOT a book that is slanted towards where Madison lives and gardens in New Mexico. Meaning, you will not find information that is inappropriate for your area. (I think that is a great accomplishment on Madison's part: That she was able to make the book very personable, but still refrain from giving us information--stated as fact--that is unsuitable or different for the various parts of the U.S. (For instance, I must plant my summer squash and tomatoes in early March. My zukes are finished in June and my tomatoes are over in July. Your tomatoes may last until the first frost.) It is a pet peeve of mine that so many vegetable gardening cookbooks assume I have tomatoes in August...--Cooking techniques are explained. And many, many techniques are employed: Steaming, sauteing, roasting, baking, grilling, braising and pressure cooking. If there are recipes for breaded and fried veggies, I don't remember seeing them. (Thank you for that!!!)--There are so many fantastic and helpful tips: How about this one? The extra-long stem on an artichoke is meant to be used: Peel, slice, drop in acidulated water, then braise, saute, or toss them into a soup.-- The simplicity of the recipes that forces the focus onto a specific vegetable, sort of reminds me of Tender: A Cook and His Vegetable Patch by Nigel Slater. But I like this book a whole lot better because it is definitely slanted towards American ways, names, places, available ingredients, available seeds and measurements***. (Slater's book, while it is filled with wonderful recipes and ideas, is slanted towards a British audience.)--***There is an adequate conversion chart of measurements at the very end of the book. Being on the last page, it is very easy to flip to. (It's a bit hard to read: Green ink and not a large type point size.)--Unlike the two books by Lawson, this book does NOT have many photographs, as it is meant to be a wealth of information, not just pretty pictures to look at. (I think it could have used some more pictures, though. But then the book would have weighed a ton.) It is definitely not a coffee table book.--There are many soup recipes--and that is important in our family. There are all kinds of salads, side dishes, and main dishes. Best of all: I'm very happy to see there are hardly any pasta recipes. They seem to be a dime a dozen these days...--We've become fans of quite a lot of Asian greens lately--they do so well in our gardens; and of course some are mentioned in this book--bok choy and Chinese broccoli and perilla (shiso) to mention a few, but I will still be referring to my favorite Asian cook books (and the Kitazawa Seed catalog) for most of them.I've only had this book a short few days, but we've already sampled several recipes. We cook from our garden, so I was kind of limited in the recipes I could choose from--it being mid-March in the Coastal Plains of Texas. But follows is a list of what I created so far, and the recipes have worked and so have the flavor combinations: Grilled Onions with Cinnamon Butter (using the first of the 1015 Texas Onions from down in the Valley); Braised Parsley Root (with the last from the garden--had to get them out to make room for two very special cherry tomatoes, both originating from further down south); Chard Soup with Cumin, Cilantro and Lime; and to use up two lonely rutabagas, I combined ideas from the Winter Stew of Braised Rutabagas Carrots, Potatoes and Parsley, and Rutabaga Soup with Gorgonzola Toasts.I'm really looking forward to trying almost all the recipes in this book. And, much to my delight, we've got quite a few of those mentioned in this book already planted in our garden.

This book is wonderful. I like that it gives the Latin names of all the vegetables and a bit of useful information about each of the vegetable families. It covers a lot of obscure vegetables that you find at a farmer's market or ethnic grocery store and find yourself wondering what they are and what to do with them. I liked this book so much I gave my first copy away as a Christmas present, and then decided I would try out the Kindle version as a replacement. I think I preferred the hard copy, because this is the sort of book that you're going to want to flip around in, and I find it annoying to try to "flip around" in ebooks. Kindle seems more convenient for the kinds of books that you read straight through. I suppose it is convenient that I can pull up a recipe on my iPad and consult it in the kitchen without having to worry about getting the book dirty. But so far I've used this book more for reading about the vegetables themselves than as a cooking manual, so in the long run I kind of wish I had purchased another hard copy.

My jam-packed cookbook shelves already held four Deborah Madison cookbooks, and I figured that was enough. But the lure of the vegetable info hooked the gardener in me. I started reading Vegetable Literacy as a book, but quickly took it from coffee table to kitchen, and have been cooking from it all summer and into the fall. We tend to eat vegetarian with fish, seafood, or meat a few times per week, and the recipes complement that style of eating very well. The recipes are relatively simple, clearly written, and very tasty. I've tried new ingredients--tempeh, coconut butter, and black quinoa come to mind. I've learned new techniques--for example, presoaking lentils and adding salt to beans at the start of cooking, which has done wonders for my black beans. Some of my new go-to recipes from this book are the basic lentil recipe, Rio Zape Beans with salt-roasted tomatoes (can sub black beans), pan-fried tempeh with trimmings, which I serve with salsa and lettuce leaf wrappers, roasted asparagus with chopped egg, griddled eggplant rounds, and heirloom tomato quinoa soup. I've tried many others and enjoyed all.I noticed another review that complained about lack of depth in the information on vegetables. I'd say this is a cookbook that gives extra insight into ingredients and a few tips on vegetable gardening. For a book that focusses on in-depth nutritional information on vegetables, I like "Eating on the Wild Side".

When you are looking for quick inspiration for tonight's supper you can leave this on the shelf, but if you are looking to immerse yourself in a culinary heaven then this is definitely the book to turn to.Well written, beautifully presented and with something to catch your attention on every page, humble vegetables are transformed into tantalising gems of information and inspiration.A wide variety of recipes, some old favorites given a new twist, some new and surprising uses of herbs and vegetables, provide an endless source of inspiration. This is definitely a book that I will turn to repeatedly.
