What a surprising book. I didn’t know what to except. Joseph Rodota managed to tell the story of fascinating life within the prestigious condo community made famous by the nation’s greatest political scandal. Who would have thought of such a book? Kudos to Rodota. The book begins with an extensive history of building the Watergate complex. That by itself is quite an enjoyable story, often including surprising and amusing material. The highlight of the book is stories of the famous political and powerful, sometimes quirky, residents. Many of these stories are just a lot of fun. Accomplished pianist Condoleezza Rice’s annual Christmas party was a great success one year, but Karl Rove was very disappointed with the hors d’oeuvres limited to Triscuits! I could go on but the party has just started....There is some more serious coverage too. I found the stories of fifty-year resident Anna Chennault especially compelling. We’ve just recently learned, by the research of another author, that the history of the Chennault Affair might not be over. I think Rodota’s coverage of Chennault will add to our understanding of her.I imagine readers will have enjoyable conversations after reading The Watergate. I have. I think it’s fair to say many will see a topic of special interest in the book and end up enjoying the entire book. It is that artfully constructed. Finally, the extent of Rodota’s research is extraordinary — everything from decades-old newspapers to precise conversations among residents. I think there’s no question that he found more evidence for his purposes than the burglars found for theirs! I highly recommend this book.

Imagine - a book about the history of a building, that you can't put down! I know... unlikely - but here it is! Rodota is a gifted and lively writer, and conveys the intertwined political, social and economic themes with wit. I won't offer any spoilers, but I will say if the Washington scene is at all interesting to you, the coincidence and odd parallels uncovered here will fascinate you.

I enjoyed reading this book. Yes it’s a history of a building but it reviewed recent US history as it dealt with the Watergate. Super interesting details re fights and parties and spies and affairs. It made me want to go to DC jist so I could stay at the hotel. I usually prefer novels, but this story kept me engaged. Highly recommend.

Engaging, entertaining and thorough! The interviews with residents from across the decades really brought the complex to life and engaged readers from many angles and perspectives. The author's sense of humor comes through, and I chuckled out loud several times while reading the book. There were also several moments of shock - The Watergate complex has been witness to an unbelievable amount of history. This book balances being thorough and engaging, and really presents a biography of a building. I learned so much about history as it was lived within the walls of the Watergate, and it made me ponder which buildings are witnessing history today.

Joe Rodota's first book The Watergate was an enjoyable non fiction book that informs the reader about a broad variety of historical facts that you would not otherwise learn. The book spans the time from when the Watergate complex was originally permitted, designed and built up to the present. It goes into detail about several interesting residents. While there was a section on the break in of the DNC headquarters the author gave equal time to a broad variety of other Watergate related topics. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

In addition to being extremely well written and meticulously researched, Rodota's Watergate is a window into the brightly colored lives of the people in and around the building who gave it character. I recommend it highly.

This book is well written and very informative.........Should be a must read for the younger group.

Fascinating Book! I'm a history buff and thought I knew a lot about the Watergate. If you are thinking or wondering how interesting a book about a building good possibly be, don't worry, you will be riveted. It's kind of like that old movie from the 60's, The Yellow Rolls Royce, where the story is about the people who are associated with the car throughout its life. Similarly, that is the story of the Watergate. Great Book! Thank you Joe Rodota.

If ever you needed a guide CUBA is where you need it. Internet connections are hard to find, very slow and you often need to wait in line for a terminal. A few private houses (casas particulares)have connections and may, may, let you use their computer but it is with a dial-up connection. Thus, for those who are fans of great sites like Tripadvisor or Yahoo travel you are SOL. Thus, get a guide or even two if you are going to Cuba. That said I took two Cuba guides with me for my three weeks traveling the island: Rough Guides (see review) and Moon Handbook: Cuba. Both are great guides and I do recommend both if you can afford it, but if I had to choose just one guide, I would take Moon.Moon's maps are great and easy to navigate. The handbook's restaurant and accommodation recommendations are very reliable and accurate (I found them to be better than Rough Guides). Unlike the codes used by Rough Guide all accommodations are priced out. The guide has a great history, government & economy sections... and a pensive section on Cuban Society. Christopher Baker's writing is clear and often candid, ie. "Varadero, the artificial Cuba frequented by budget-minded Canadian and European charter groups... lacks vitality. At night the onshore breeze brings rotten-egg fumes from the petrochemical works... more importantly, it bears no relation to Cuban reality."It comes up short regarding the scuba diving section (Rough Guide is excellent) and does not have as many recommendations for restaurants or accommodations as Rough Guide. That said this is a great guide and you will not go wrong using taking it with you. Highly recommended. Footnote, I also recommend that you take with you 'Cuba: What Everybody Needs to Know' by Julia Sweig... this is an excellent overview of Cuba in all regards.

I've been to Cuba seven times. I met my wife on the second trip. 99% of tourists never leave the resorts, except for an excursion to Habana Viejo (Havana's old city). Most of the guidebooks are for those people, presenting only the places that tourists go. Of those guidebooks the Lonely Planet guidebook (Sainsbury, 4th ed.) is the best.Only one guidebook covers every pueblito on the island. My 4th edition of the Christopher Baker's Moon Handbook is falling apart from too much use. I'm ordering the 5th edition for my trip in a few weeks. The Moon guide is not only complete, it is a pleasure to read. Baker is a fine writer. The photos and maps are excellent too. The history of Cuba in the back is better than some of the history books I've read. If you want to go to Cuba's less popular national parks (i.e., not Vinales or Topos de Collantes) you'll have to get Baker's guidebook, as this is the only book that covers the undeveloped national parks.I liked Baker's guidebook so much that I read "Mi Moto Fidel," his book about writing the first edition of the Moon guidebook. My only complaint about the Moon guidebook is that it makes me want to take six months and see all the amazing places he describes. Also, my wife and Cuban in-laws are continually shocked at the out of the way places I want to see. They just want to go to a resort and lie by the pool (they weren't allowed to enter resorts until a couple years ago, so this is a dream to them). I want to go see something the Baker found -- an American fighter-bomber that was shot down in the Bay of Pigs invasion, miles down a rugged trail; or hire an ornithologist to go into a swamp to see a bee hummingbird (the world's smallest bird); or hire a guide to explore the Gran Caverna de San Tomas, Cuba's biggest cave.**update** The 5th edition (2010) is much smaller. My favorite resort, Hanabanilla near Manicaragua, was left out because few tourists go there (which is one reason I like it). I wish that Christopher Baker had updated the 4th edition and then the publisher had released it on the Kindle. The 4th edition was heavy to carry around. What would be perfect would be to carry the Lonely Planet guide (in print) and have the 4th edition Moon guide on your Kindle.

The author is a white man from the UK who is in his 60s and his perspective/language seems to be a bit stuck in 1985. He refers often to the "New World" (people still say this?) makes quippy/snobby remarks about Cuban food (calls some dishes "common peasant food" - wtf?), and generally tends to point readers to places built for/most comfortable to older white dude tourists -- snobby ones with lots of money.I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend going to Cuba. I'd download the Lonely Planet app instead - they had great suggestions for Havana.

Best guide to this rapidly shifting place. Easy to use. Excellent maps.

I can't usually say that I agree almost all the time with travel writers, but in this case it was true! The author obviously really knows Cuba and makes witty (and true) comments that made reading the book enjoyable. I had this book and the LP with me on my recent trip, and found this book the most helpful. A few of his hotel recommendations were a bit out of date, but since the book was written in 2010 that is to be expected. Where he really shines is the recommendations for outdoor activities, which was a highlight for me.Overall-a great travel book!

She left this morning for Cuba!

The only down side is that you have to figure out the parts of Havana first but once you get your bearings, this book is excellent. Talks about history so you can compare it to the official version that every tour guide forces you to listen to. We had every kind of guidebook on this trip. This and the Rough guide seemed to be the best.

Great read of the mysticism of the Inca, and an underlying theory of how to decode myths from oral cultures. Great research and presentation that takes you on the authors journey of discovery while it also teaches you about the discoveries and what they mean. Lots of great insight here, and I feel like I learned not only about the Inca, but a number of other cultures and topics as well (some of the lessons and metaphors of this book are easily applied to other traditions as well).Lots of information here, so I could see some people having a little trouble making it all the way through the book. Some of the astronomy was a bit over my head, as I am not used to many of the terms used, but the author explained things well enough that I could understand most of it regardless of my inexperience with astronomy.I sometimes lead group trips to Peru to see Machu Pichu and other ruins, and I will hopefully be reading this book a second time before my next visit in a few months - a lot of this information will be very helpful in understanding some of the ruins and myths more deeply!

This book is every bit as entertaining as the run-of-the-mill speculative/paranormal UFO-from-Atlantis books with which it is unfortunately cross-listed on Amazon, but the author's scholarly rigor makes it much more satisfying. Sullivan supports his fascinatingly unconventional conclusions with evidence, sound reasoning, and a bit of self-critical skepticism. But the real charm of this book is the fact that he pursued such a crazy theory in the first place. Behind the scholarship is a "guy-with-a-crazy-dream" human-interest story (e.g. Fitzcarraldo, Field of Dreams). This would make perfect film material for Werner Herzog. To hear the author tell it, he spent several years in the academic wilderness (as well as the Andean wilderness), chasing after the (wholly-unsupported) hypothesis that Incan myth encodes both astronomy and Andean history. To his advisers, this must have sounded a lot like writing a grant to study the pyramids of Mars. For a lesser intellect, this would have been a career-killer and the reader gets the sense that Sullivan knew it. One of the best parts of the book recounts Sullivan's meeting with Owen Gingerich and "the Vatican Astronomer" at the Harvard planetarium. He's clearly terrified that these eminent astronomers will think he's a kook. But when they conclude: "he's done his homework," Sullivan breathes a sigh of relief.A word of warning: get the hardback. I got the paperback edition and the binding was defective and the first 50 pages fell out the first time I read them.

A must read if you are open to expanding your "truths'. Something tells me the author uses more of his brain than the average human.

Reads like a text book at times but it has much detailed info on pre Columbian myths and archae-atronomy. Because I live in the southern hemisphere it's easy for me to identify the stars and dark regions of the milky way discussed in the book and I can see first hand how the myths originated and developed up until the conquest. An absorbing read.

The book provides much information about the Incas, citing astronomy and influence of this in their myths. The book is very good, although it could work more the influence of the Spanish on what we know today about their myths.

Liked this book, very easy to read and informative. Would recommend to anyone going to Peru on vacation who have an interest in history.

The book examines Inka and Mayan myths using a variety of tools, and many, many words. To the first myth the book applies the theories in Hamlets Mill to explain why the Foxes tail is black and pinpoint AD 650 as the rise of warfare in the Andes. From here it's mostly downhill. The book then drags us through his own internal mental processes of doubt and disbelief as we look at other myths. Through this long process we are subjected to forceful and unnecessary biases such as there is no proof that a matriarchal society ever existed anywhere in the world. Period. He returns to the subject of matriarchal disbelief many times calling it a big 'red flag'. We are lead through the authors admitted internal stubborness of this and many other issues.Although I believe the book is correct in it's assocation with the Fox's tail being black being a celestial event ala Hamlets Mills, we spend so many words looking at other myths from a plethora of angles that we are forced into a single conclusion. That no one outside of a culture has any clue at what a given myth really means. The entire book is like running naked through the forest yelling out conclusions about myths which rightly are interpreted only by their creators. At one point in the discussion of 'finding father' we hear a claim that the Andean man lacked a true heart with the ability to love while he was primarily a hunter within a matrilinear horticultural society. Andean man only gained his heart and full ability to love when the culture changed to fully agriculture and he had to stay at home with the wife and kids. Give me a break. To any Andean person alive this is rubbish. What kinds of conclusions and judgements can we make living outside the cultural box. It is this kind of subtle talk that is a jaguars hair short of prejudice and racism.Ultimately, although if you like reading from the 'academic' view, this book does lead you through enough alleys to make you feel like the author knows what he is talking about, ultimately it fails from it's biases and from being rooted in a combination of sexism and western scientific dogma. If the book you to really understand the Andean mind then the author would have had to undergo a process of breaking open his head and surrendering to the mystery of myth rather than trying to break open the myths using the rational mind. Myth is mythic. A view which ultimately escapes the author. It might be worth it to take this book on if you have a university paper to write. It will certainly scintillate your professor being of the same vocabulary and possibly biases. But if you are looking to expanding your understanding of the Inka or Andean cultures from a spiritual or mythic perspective then look elsewhere. Get yourself to South America, Peru, spend time with the shamans. Then you can learn what myth is really about. And how it lives today.

Very interesting and more in depth than I expected.

A Social History of the Ise Shrines (Bloomsbury Shinto Studies)

    Review

In this engaging social history of the Ise Shrines, Mark Teeuwen and John Breen challenge cherished notions holding that Ise is the primal locus of Shinto, unifying and providing the standard for all other Shinto shrines since ancient times. By contrast, the authors show that Ise only acquired an unambiguously Shinto identity quite late in its history. They also show that the relations between Ise and the imperial house have changed greatly over time, and that the shrines' present-day austere appearance was achieved only by removing much of the carnival atmosphere that had made it so popular in the Edo period. In these and many other ways, this study corrects a host of mistaken ideas about the Ise Shrines. But though Teeuwen and Breen write against the grain of the cultural essentialism and religious nationalism that has colored so many previous writings on Ise, their work is not a polemic. Instead, their book is a balanced and authoritative study of a central subject in the history of Japanese religions that will be warmly welcomed and widely appreciated. This book takes us on a journey into the multilayered history of the Ise Shrines. As John Breen and Mark Teeuwen brilliantly demonstrate, this is not an everlasting history, but one of continuous reshaping, spatial reconfigurations, shifting power struggles, and economic influences, which acquire meaning in relation to their social contexts. The book is very well documented and sharp and is a must read study for scholars and students interested in Shinto, religion, and Japan.

Universe of Stone: A Biography of Chartres Cathedral, by Philip Ball

    From The New Yorker

In this lively biography of Chartres Cathedral, Ball explores the configuration of cultural and technological factors that enabled Europe to achieve a "liberation from gravity" in the twelfth century, including the rise of scholasticism, Platonic obsessions with light and proportion, and heroic masons who "turned geometry into stone." The accomplishments of Gothic architecture were all the more remarkable given that stonework was virtually forgotten in the West in the centuries after Rome fell. Though much of the history of Chartres Cathedral remains opaque, BallÂ’s account of its construction reveals fascinating details (such as the origins of its blue glass, likely scavenged from Roman or Byzantine sites) and evokes its raison d’être: in an era when architecture "existed to reveal the deep design of GodÂ’s creation," Chartres "encoded a set of symbols and relationships that mapped out the universe itself." This book was the first book I ever read by Philip Ball, and it's a part of my permanent keeper collection. I have no recollection as to why I read it in the first place, but as I did so I realized I was listening to a master storyteller of things that I didn't know about. That's a real treat for me - to read an interesting well-written book that clearly outlines something I don't know much about. The main subject, Chartres Cathedral, is well known - PB tells us about why and how it was built, about its' split architecture, the people who built it, and, really, the reasoning that went into it. And the Moorish sources of its' design and how it impacted European thinking. And how Chartres influenced other cathedrals in France, and why the influences were different from Germanic cathedrals built around the same time, and the Norman buildings were different, too!The author ties all these disparate elements together into a seamless, interesting, and very readable book.FEU

This is a serious scholarly study which describes the history, philosophy and architectural aspects of this magnificent cathedral. It probably has more detail concerning individuals who influenced or participated in the decisions, design and its building than is necessary for the average reader, and though interesting, gets laborious. Larger diagrams and better pictures would raise my rating. I enjoyed the book because the author writes well and it is very authoritative. It's descriptions of changing religious and philosophical influences, as well as emphasis on education on the continent, their combined influence on gothic architecture, combine to make this an interesting book.

I've taught an interdisciplinary course entitled "Cathedrals and Other Great Churches of Medieval Europe" a dozen times (twice in England), had Malcolm Miller as a guest lecturer (and tour guide at Chartres in one of my three visits there) and Peter Gibson of the York Minster Stained Glass Workshop as a guest lecturer (and tour guide at York Minster twice), visited more than a hundred medieval and renaissance great churches, and read at least parts of more than half of the books and articles listed in the seven-page bibliography of this book, and, in my judgment, no other book comes close to this one in providing real insight into understanding the great medieval churches. For my course, I used a reader I developed comprising excerpts from dozens of different books to give my students the breadth of ideas, opinions and knowledge needed to understand these great churches. Like many other compilations it suffered from wide variations in the "voices" of the various authors and from unevenness in coverage of the diverse subjects that students needed to grasp the significance of these monuments. I dreamed that some day I would have the time and energy to assemble a coherent anthology -- maybe one with a title like: "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Medieval Churches . . ." but, alas, retirement reared its ugly head and the motivation to do so disappeared. Now, however, Philip Ball has fulfilled my dream, and although he has done so in the context of a single great church, much of what he has written is applicable to most of them. His book makes me wish I hadn't retired so I could use it as a text. Not every reader will understand all of the nuances of the many subjects Ball covers in this book, but every reader with any interest in medieval churches will find this wonderfully well-written book to be not only a fascinating read but also a great addition to his or her library.

In the 1950s, when I was first studying Gothic architecture, the emphasis was on form; successive changes in shape and pattern. Banister Fletcher's tome, "A History of Architecutre on the comparative method" was our reference source and the excellent illustrations reinforced the formal message. When I first taught the subject, in the 1970s, I felt that there should be much more understanding of the context in which architecure comes into being. I put emphasis on economic, social and technical issues as well as the formal ones. Philip Ball's excellent book takes a similar approach though there is relatively little discussion of the economic context, upon which I would have placed greater emphasis. On the other hand, Ball devotes a significant section to the philosophical context in the Middle Ages.Ball is not an architectural historian, but he has read widely and distilled a wide range of knowledge about the great cathedrals of the 12th and 13th centuries, while always focussing on that much-cited masterpiece, Chartres. My previous acquaintance with the author was through his book "Critical Mass, How one thing leads to another". It is a heavywight - literally - book of close to 600 pages and, although quite readable, it demands careful reading. "Universe of Stone" is not like that. It demands much less of the reader without in any way being a shallow interpretation. The illustrations, many of them in colour, are excellent. Dr Ball clearly shares my admiration for the masons responsible for the great edifice and goes to considerable length to show exactly why that admiration is well founded.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I recommend it highly.

I am so in love with Juliet Grey's trilogy of Marie Antoinette. She has thoroughly researched all important sources and her novels, while fiction, are right on the mark historically. As a amateur historian of Marie Antoinette, I highly recommend these books. It's a wonderful way to learn history (and believe me, the court of Versailles is fascinating in detail) while enjoying a good novel and getting to know the real Marie Antoinette and her entourage.

Marie comes off as completely spoiled and narcissistic which, although I've seen that characteristic done before, left me feeling no sympathy for her and I was rooting for her head myself. It seemed very much life reading from the perspective of the spoiled heiress except nothing redeemable ever happens. If your a fan of this period then maybe your get over the character flaws, but if not, just pass

This was the sevond book of the trilogy on Marie Antoinette: it was just as enjoyable as the first book. The author makes you feel that you are living in the era as you read about the queen’s life.

I had a love/hate relationship with Marie Antoinette throughout this book. Early on she behavior like a selfish child, which she was. As the end of her reign approached, I was filled with great pity for the Queen. Alas, the perils of a monarchy.

Read it when it first came out. Yesterday I had the joy of sitting in the local botanical gardens and reading it again under the shade of a tree--I pretended I was in the gardens of Versailles. Juliet Grey has a wonderful way of transporting us back in time...to relive the glorious splendors and to regret yet again that no one came to the rescue of Marie Antoinette--a woman with more courage than most of us and whose follies did not deserve the bitter ending that awaited her.

Juliet Grey's first novel in this trilogy "Becoming Marie Antoinette" was wonderful, focusing upon Marie Antoinette before she became Queen of France. This novel directly follows on from the first, commencing with the coronation of Louis XVI--"Louis le desire"--who came to the throne much beloved by the people. Juliet Grey clearly shows in this novel the couple's descent from being the desired new King and Queen of France to the hated pair that they became during the time leading up to the Revolution. The novel ends with the storming of the Bastille, leaving me in anticipation Ms Grey's final novel in this trilogy; "The Last October Sky".Ms Grey gives excellent insight into the events that transpired leading up to the Revolution, and also, which was particularly interesting, how those events were linked to the American Revolution. I found the debate concerning the aid given to the American colonists very interesting; Louis XVI wished to help America against France's long-time enemy Britain, but had concerns about helping a people who were rebelling against their monarch. As a monarch himself, and one even more autocratic than George III of England, I am surprised that he chose to give so much aid to the American revolutionaries. He virtually bankrupted his own country, which of course had disastrous effects. I was given a strong sense of Louis tempting fate troughout this novel. As for Marie Antoinette herself I feel as though Ms Grey has given great insight into her character, and gives reasons as to why she acted in the ways she did. History has cast Marie Antoinette in such a negative light, putting words in her mouth that she never uttered (she never said "let them eat cake!") This is not to say that this novel shows Marie Antoinette as an innocent angel, but rather it shows her as merely human; with faults like we all have, but none of which made her evil or uncaring. She loved her children greatly, and did spare a thought for those less fortunate than herself. However, she had absolutely no control in government and therefore was completely helpless to help those who needed it. Strange really, considering that she was blamed for almost everything. All in all I this was a well-written novel that portrayed events concisely, allowing the reader a clear perspective of such a turbulent time period. The characters were enjoyable to read of, as they are created to be shown as real people with both faults and strengths, instead of historical figures to be kept at a distance. A great novel, and I can't wait for the next one.(Added September 2013: the third novel in the trilogy is no longer called 'The Last October Sky' but is 'Confessions of Marie Antoinette').

Loved the trilogy. If you like a nice long novel this is for you. Such detail, you almost feel l;ike you are there, although I'm glad I wasn't, lol.

Thoroughly enjoyable book series. I told my French girlfriend about the book and she said that the facts included were accurate.
