I want to give this book 5 stars. The story held my interest and I know first-hand how difficult it is to write a business book that keeps readers' interest.I like the premise of Jim Barton, with no IT experience, thrown into managing an unfamiliar IT Department. One reviewer said only IT pros should manage IT Departments and compared it to somebody with no finance background acting as a CFO. I've made the exact same argument - a CIO with no knowledge about IT could be a recipe for disaster.But this book makes a persuasive case that an appreciation of IT might be even more important than knowledge about IT. Perhaps the important factor isn't a lifetime of IT experience. Maybe wisdom and a willingness to listen, learn, build a good team, and evaluate fact from fiction are what makes a good CIO. Or a good CFO. Or a good CEO. After all, CIOs don't usually configure routers or write code or place servers into production or take help desk calls. Perhaps appreciating those skill sets is more important than possessing them. Jim Barton is a smart manager with a good team. He starts out shaky, but learns quickly about not knowing what he doesn't know and he grows into the position. The story works.But I can't give this book 5 stars. It has problems. Some of the scenarios Barton faces are too contrived and some are unrealistic. And the proposed solution to a possible security event - shut down the whole company for a week and rebuild everything from backups? No way. Doesn't make sense. And doesn't solve the problem.Don't get me wrong - the concerns using that event as a vehicle are real. And it's a good premise. But if there's a database problem, go through the database and fix it. IT pros in the real world do this every day. The problem could be a hardware glitch or a bunch of other factors. Security breaches are real, as we've all seen from recent headlines, but assuming a security breach because of every unexplained problem is not justified. This company is a Microsoft shop - the problem could have just as easily been a bad patch from a Windows Update. How many times have we seen those mess up systems?My jaw dropped when the new CIO recommended to the new CEO to shut down the whole company for a week while they rebuild everything from backups. Nobody in their right mind would recommend or do that. It just didn't make sense.My other problem with the book was the HR issue. Several months into Barton's tenure, a subordinate manager asks Barton's advice on retaining a valuable employee. That part makes sense and the chapter presents the right issues and tradeoffs. But what doesn't make sense is, Barton had never heard of this employee and didn't know anything about the retention issue until the subordinate manager talked to him. What?!? You're running the department of a few dozen people and you don't know who the people are? Doesn't work. Barton is too smart of a manager for that.So that's why 4 stars instead of 5 stars. It's a good book. If a subsequent edition comes out and fixes those problems, it could be a great book.- Greg Scott

I bought this book because it was a required textbook for one of my MBA classes. Written by two Harvard Business School professors, it combines a good story along with relevant managerial lessons. Based on its format, you won't learn much about the details of specific IT functions (e.g. coding, hardware, etc.), but its overview of big-picture leadership for information technology is great. Even if one does not have any direct IT experience, the lessons on proper strategic implementation will help business leaders understand IT's role in their organization.

If you are even remotely connected to IT you got to grab a copy of this book. Published by Harvard press, this is a case study in the form of a fictional story which we all can relate to.Barton, a VP of loans operations at a financial firm gets promoted to become the CIO when he has no idea how to run an IT group. He has always spent his life on the business side and has always found issues with the IT operations, the tables are turned now and he has to figure out how to run and fix the IT organization.Those related to IT will easily relate to the issues that are identified in the book and those on the business side will develop a more understanding view when they read this book.This one is going right on my favorite books shelf !!

I had this book for a course I had recently in college. While that may sound like a textbook, this is more of a novel, and it really does keep you interested. I wish more of my "textbooks" were like this one to keep you interested. I found myself reading ahead and wanting to keep reading just for the fun of it! Very well written and it includes some of the same situations I've seen in IT recently and throughout my career. It provides a nice real-world example without too much fluff.

I have a huge issue with the start of this book. It sends the wrong message to professionals. Basically, you can be a "leader" in IT without any prior knowledge of IT. It's well written (that's why I'm giving it 2 stars) but the protagonist basically weaseled his way into a job (my opinion) by being "vocal" on issues he has no understanding of... then gets that same job and has to do the same things he was "vocal" against. It tells young professionals to speak loudly even if you don't know what your talking about.... it really burns my hide!

This book made my course much more enjoyable by giving an entertaining and easy to read real-world style story of the application of IT in a business sense. I think my professor made a good choice in including it in our course.Each chapter is divided up well and covers a specific topic or set of topics. It also includes questions at the end of each chapter that are good for class discussion.

This is a chronicle of a new CIO as it accepts the position that he was highly critical of before the "reorganization" at his company. Don't let the cover fool you. This is NOT a comic book, but a classroom, required text for a management course. You follow the main character as he learns why IT is different than the department that he came from. You learn tricks (KWYDK - Know what you don't know) and learn what it might be like to be a new CIO in a company. POV a gay cop in Honolulu? And a crime that involves the sovereignty movement? A novel about Hawaii that spends more time in Papakolea than Waikiki? This is good stuff. And it almost all works except for a strange self-consciousness about words that are in the Hawaiian language, or that reference local food and culture. It's understandable that these words need some explanation but the explanations read like they've been cut from anthropology text books and are very disruptive to the flow of the novel. In contrast, his handling of the main character's gay lifestyle is quite adroit. Sometimes the pidgin English seems thrown in there just to be exotic, rather than authentic but I suppose that's artistic license. The characters are widely varied and are most successful when they are the ones that show the grittier side of life in paradise. The author has taken on a lot in this novel, and I am curious to see how the next one goes.

Always engaging and exciting and now following Kimo and Mike as they make their new life together. I am looking forward to Zero break. Highly recommended for those who like a good mystery with a nice romance as a back story, although Kimo and Mike certainly don't have your garden variety relationship but of course you would expect that from a headstrong cop and a headstrong fireman all set against the familiar to me island of Oahu. If you are going to read the story please start with book one which is Mahu, I have been faithfully following this series for years now and love it and suspect you will as well.

This is one in a series of Mahu books by Neil Plakcy. Mahu means gay man in Hawaii, though with a negative connotation. I have read all the books in the series and recommend starting with the first book Mahu, which was followed by Mahu Surfer, Mahu Fire, Mahu Vice, and this book Mahu Blood. The main character is a constant through the series, and his development as a gay man, and as a gay man in the work place, is chronicled, within a mystery novel format. Neil Plakcy's writing is very easy to read and compelling, and insights about Hawaii and the coming out experience are chronicled. There is some erotic content, though this is not a major feature of these books. There is another book, Mahu Men, by Neil Plakcy which is a series of short stories, connected to the Mahu novels. I did not start reading Mahu Men until after reading the novels.

"Mahu Blood," is the sixth (but not the last) in Neil Plakcy's detective series set in Honolulu, on the Hawai'ian island of Oa'hu. Irritating Kindle quirks aside, this book beautifully carries the confirmed Plakcy fan further along in the unfolding story of Kimo Kanapa'aka, gay multi-racial Hawai'ian homicide detective. The title is important, because blood is a key feature of this book: from the blood of a murder victim, to the blood of racial identity, to the more complex and non-biological kinship ties that bind people together.For the first-time reader, the complex backstory might be a little puzzling, but Plakcy takes care to reiterate key elements from the series to create an overall picture. But the book is best read as part of the series, beginning with "Mahu," in which Kimo is forced to out himself, and come to grips with being gay, in order to solve a murder.Kimo Kanapa'aka is one of the most richly developed and finely drawn characters in modern American fiction. That's, IMHO, in ALL American fiction, not just the gay/detective genre. The distinct nature of Hawai'i as different from the rest of the U.S. is vividly sketched with love and understanding, as is the complex racial-culture makeup of Hawai'i's citizenry--including Kimo's own family and the circle of friends he's know from high school. Every part of Kimo's life, including his evolving relationship with fireman Mike Ricciardi, is woven into the tapestry of this compelling story.I have loved every one of these books, and would say that all together they offer a literary experience as rich as the great Victorian serialists like Dickens and Trollope. Paperback or e-book, "Mahu Blood" and its fellows are must-reads.

I really enjoyed Plakcy's early work but the newer versions and especially this one have becoming tedious... probably won't buy another unless I read really interesting reviews.

I am a fan of Neils work, and this was an excellent book in terms of its detective story, the Hawaian scenery, and the continuing development of its characters. It needed a little more back story, as it has been a while between book releases, but well worth buying.However, I would send this book back to Amazon (if I knew how) because the kindle edition wasn't particularly readable - it had errors, especially oblong symbols with question marks in them on every page. It was very irritating,and in the end, didn't make the purchase good value for money, which is a real shame for the talented author. Terry

There are several things explained that I may never do, but was very interested in reading how they are done. Less “professional” options are often included. All in all, this is my new favorite cookbook, both for actual baking and for curling up and reading. It has given me lots of inspiration and I can hardly wait to get cooking!

Nick Malgieri, former executive pastry chef at Windows on the World and 1996 inductee into Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America, is currently director of the baking programme at the Institute of Culinary Education. I just received this book in the mail, so I have not baked from it yet. I would have to say that it doesn't look like it for anyone who is new to baking, and that I am not. I'm thinking "advanced" bakers would do the best. Yes, I saw "cobbler" and "chocolate tarts" and blueberry pie", but I also saw strudel and brioche --these are for most beginners. You might want to be aware of that before you buy. I do agree with several of the other reviewers...the print is hard to read. The ingredients list is darker, but the instructions are more difficult. The hardest to read are the gray background pages, while the white pages are a bit easier than the gray are. Lovely photos...I wish it had more of those. I find that to be true of many cookbooks though. Maybe checked it out in a store first, and then decide...you can always come back and order here.

I recently picked up baking as a hobby and purchased this book based on the good reviews. So far, I've made the traditional Vienna apple strudel / strudel dough, olive oil dough, and a quiche. Everything turned out delicious. The instructions were clear and easy to follow.On a side note, the author appears to take a practical approach in providing weight measurements in this book - for example, only volume measurements tend to be provided for pie or quiche filling recipes whereas weight and volume measurements are provided for dough recipes (where precision is likely to be of greater importance).Overall, I am very happy I purchased this book.

I’ve tried many of the pie doughs in this book so far. All are solid but none are my favorite. Book gives good tips for someone newly exploring the world of pies and pastry, like me!

Wonderful, beautiful book from the pastry master Nick Malgieri. I have some of his other baking books, and this one is the best. I especially wanted it for his demystification of the strudel making process!!!!!

I couldn't be happier with this recipe book! I have made two tarts and they both have been delicious. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are consistent and lovely. I particularly enjoyed the chocolate raspberry tart with chocolate cookie crust. I was incredibly pleased with the result and it tasted like something you would sinfully indulge in after an expensive dinner at a fancy restaurant. Nick Malgieri truly has perfected these recipes and provides a lot of information and tips with each type of dough and filling. However, I do advise before you begin to make something to thoroughly read all the information applicable to the recipe you are following-- I have noticed in both "Pastry" and "Perfect Cakes" that important information is sometimes found in places that you don't expect, for example, under the techniques portion of the book. The book itself is beautiful, too. The cover has a nice, matte finish, and the pages are printed on a thick, matte paper as well that have a great feel and texture. However, be careful handling the book while you are baking if you want to keep it in good condition. If you are looking for a lovely book with interesting and tasty pastry recipes, both sweet and savory, BUY THIS BOOK! It has a wonderful variety for all preferences and tastes.

Loved the book only wished the printing was a better easier to read. It was light and so small. Great book though.
