Review
"The Winter Soldier brims with improbable narrative pleasures...These pages crackle with excitement--and charging cavalries, false identities, arranged marriages, scheming industrialists and missing persons...Within the meticulously researched and magnificently realized backdrop of European dissolution, Mason finds his few lost souls, and shepherds them toward an elusive peace. Lucius's 'dream of being able to see another person's thinking' is not only the controlling metaphor of The Winter Soldier, but the work of literature more broadly. Lucius may fail, but the novel he carries is a spectacular success."―Anthony Marra, New York Times"The beauty of Mason's new novel persists even through scenes of unspeakable agony. That tension reflects the span of his talent...The story that unfolds in this forsaken place is so captivating that you may feel as unable to leave it as Lucius does."―Ron Charles, Washington Post"I have been a Daniel Mason fan since The Piano Tuner. His abilities as a storyteller and a writer of the most gorgeous prose leave you wanting more. The Winter Soldier is a tour de force. I was immersed in the grandeur of Imperial Vienna and the frozen battlefields of the Eastern Front, and in this beautiful tale of love and war, and of our frailty and resilience in the face of both."―Abraham Verghese, bestselling author of Cutting for Stone"Epic...Urgent, cinematically beautiful...Lucius is an irresistible protagonist...Not only does Mason make every crumb of pertinent history, culture, and geography so real throughout this saga that a reader feels instantly teleported into all of it, [but] The Winter Soldier delivers, in shocking detail, a relentless inventory of the era's medical knowledge and practices...Mason has created a magnificent world, urging us to savor every grain of it."―Joan Frank, San Francisco Chronicle"As lyrical as a Viennese waltz and as delicate as crystal, Mason's riveting novel examines the human heart and the wounds of war with clear eyes and compassion."―People"The Winter Soldier held me by the throat from the first lyrical page to the last. A story which manages to be as original as it is timeless, and above all, credible."―Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room"Part mystery, part war story, part romance, The Winter Soldier is a dream of a novel--impeccably researched and totally immersive. The unsinkable Margarete is a mesmerizing character, and the book's investigation into the psychiatric toll of war on its combatants could not be more timely. This novel convinces you with every sentence."―Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All the Light We Cannot See"What I've found most remarkable about Mason's fiction is the quality of his revelations, his ability to unveil temperaments, habits, natures...Although The Winter Soldier contains some of the most brutal moments of suffering I've encountered in fiction, they're never there just to move the story along. They allow the reader to sit very close to someone in great pain and listen to him."―Wyatt Mason, New York Times Magazine"So real, so rich and detailed, that the room in which I was reading vanished. I was transported to a lost world of the past. Suspenseful, thrilling, aching with emotion. Living with Lucius and Margarete, it was the First World War as I have never felt it."―Andrew Sean Greer, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less"In the tradition of Cold Mountain and Doctor Zhivago, Daniel Mason's new novel is a gloriously gripping story of love, war, and the marvel of human endurance. Sweeping yet intimate, brutal yet tender, it kept me up, it broke my heart, and it made me remember yet again just how a good book--a really good book--rekindles our love of life."―Julia Glass, National Book Award-winning author of Three Junes and A House Among the Trees

This coming November 11th will the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended The Great War, now known as World War One. Daniel Mason's glorious novel of that war, "The Winter Soldier", is a must-read for anyone who appreciates excellent historical fiction and a profoundly gripping love story.Lucius Krzelewski is 22 years old, a medical student from Vienna, sent to act as a doctor at a Regimental Hospital in the Carpathian mountains in the winter of 1915. When Lucius arrives at the “hospital†it’s not at all what he expected, but HE is not what they expected, either. Met by the hospital's only remaining nurse, Sister Margarete, she quickly surmises Lucius’ inexperience and lack of practical training. Sister Margarete ends up being his greatest teacher.Mason's careful and vivid descriptions of the medical practices of the time, and the brutality of the war are not for the squeamish. Central to the plot is "the winter soldier", a young man named Horvath, who is brought in with severe "shell shock". Author Daniel Mason, according to the cover notes, is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford, so it is not surprising that his knowledge of neurological disorders connected with WWI is vast, and thus informs Lucius' care of the afflicted. What an utter tragedy that war was. Some high points of the novel are:- A riveting and revolting description of catheterizing a moving target!- Sister Margarete's fabulously grotesque and visceral monologue on lice. You'll start to itch!- A wonderfully inventive ploy against a first tier villain.- Exquisite prose with just the right amount of wit, and a protagonist who is so so wonderfully human. When I got to the last chapter I found any excuse (laundry! groceries! cleaning!) to pause, so that I could to draw it out. I did not want the novel to end - I was afraid to know what happened. I was so fully invested by then it was almost a physical reaction as I slowly turned the pages. When it came, the end was nothing I could ever have imagined. And it was perfect.
I loved this book. Dr. Mason is a word master —- his writing is beautiful. I love WWI and WW II stories. Mason just takes you right there in the war and the field hospital. Being a nurse most of my life, I particularly enjoyed reading the hardships of dealing with critically injured soldiers. Of course the love story was magnificent.
Lucius Krelewski begins his medical training in Vienna, not so much to be a healer, as to continue his passion for the study of science. In the middle of his training, WWI begins. With patriotic fervor, he enlists in the Austrian medical corps. Having barely touched any patients during his training, Lucius is sent to a remote medical outpost in the Carpathian Mountains. Here he learns both the art and craft of medicine, the tenderness of love and the barbarity of war. He encounters and is intrigued by what is now called PTSD which plagues so many of his patients. Post war, Lucius too struggles with nightmares.Mason writes a filigree of prose that borders on poetry. The reader is firmly in place in the beauty of the setting and the emotional depth of the characters. Battle scenarios are frightening in their ferocity. The anguish of Lucius and his patients is palpable. In the end, he goes on a personal odyssey to regain his love, his life and his soul. As in his novel, The Piano Tuner, Mason proves to be a master wordsmith. He creates a very human story that resonates long after the last page.
This was the most interesting book I've read in a while. The story was Human, reflective , compelling and poignant. It causes you to question your own bravado, should you find yourself in this or a similar circumstance. The characters appear real and relatable. The story heartfelt.I recommend this book to anyone that wishes to understand to trials of the unfortunate people at the mercy of the Nazi's.
The Winter Soldier is an incredible book. I learned many new words, though I did not take the time to look all of them up in the dictionary. I JUST HAD TO READ ON AND ON. I have spent many, many years reading Holocaust stories. In this book, I learned about the absolute horrors of the war for the people in the ravaged countries. I learned that there is so much more i need to learn about the people and governments that fought and were changed in the First World War. I loved Lucious and his nurse. How will Lucius go on in life after his incredible search for his nurse. How will Lucius find a new life ? The book is so fine--real literature. I hope that a movie is not made of this novel--it stands complete as a fine book. The author did so much research--and it is here in the book, along with the real thoughts and actions of the people we read about. Please Daniel Masson, write another book. I am waiting for the next book. THANK YOU.
I picked this up after a review on io9. I'm normally a fantasy lover, but I read this through in one sitting. The story does a good job of character development, and writing from a single perspective. The limitations of the characters are made apparent and exposed without limiting the story, and the writing is almost painfully evocative at times. Really loved it the first 2/3rds of the story but it kind of lost its way a bit when the world opened back up for the characters.
A wonderful book in great condition. Thank you.
First chapter. It's hard to tell if this will be a medical journal of war story as the title and Short opening implies.
