Dorothy Rainwater was an expert on silver, this fine book gives a comprehensive listing of 1400 American silver manufacturers, the manufacturing of which really started in 1842 when silver production moved away from handmade to mostly machine manufactured thanks to the industrial era which, along with, important silver deposit descoveries made some ownership of silver affordable for practically everyone. This wonderful book shows the makings used by the manufacturer along with founding history, location of where they started, subsequent moves, mergers and other interesting facts. One cannot go wrong buying this book if you have any interest in American silver, which, in my opinion, is the world's best in the guilded age.
A very fine book, however wrong mark is shown for Old Newbury Crafters. O.N.C. neveruses a "bird" mark on their sterling. The mark is that of Meriden Silver. Other informationhopefully is more accurate.
This was just what I was looking for. A starter book to help identify American Silver manufacturers and their marks. The marks are clear and there are many. Also includes very detailed histories about the companies and their often multiple ownership transfers and what they produced during these periods.Note that it is published in 1979 so it doesn't include recent history but for the used price it was an excellent purchase for me.

As all silver collectors know, more sources are better. However, this one has information easy to find that other sources do not, particularly in silverplate, which I predict is coming to the fore.

Concise, well-written reference which is exactly what I was looking for in a book. It has some of the more obscure marks of companies that merged with other companies multiple times and you're never quite sure who did what, when they did it and where it happened!!
