I had to use Hayashi for econometrics. My econometrics professor did not explain much and always told us to refer to the book.Wow...I still remember the pain. Trying to prove things that almost seemed impossible and stuff that they never taught me in college.To be fair the book is well written. And I confirmed this with my hardcore econ PhD friends. Also, that is why a lot of econometrics professors love this book. However, if you do not have a solid math/ econometrics background then I suggest starting with easier book such as Wooldridge or Cameron's Econometrics book. Then look at Hayashi. Also, it is super helpful if you have a friend that can help you with the math and the proofs.Also, these days, there are lot of Econometrics YouTube videos and other materials online, so you can supplement them. But ultimately, you have to really go through the pain and then you will see the beauty.

Over the past four or five decades, econometric methods have been borrowed and used more or less effectively by social scientists in a broad range of disciplines. Generally, though certainly not in every case, those who use econometric methods in other social sciences are not as well trained in mathematics as economists, and they have little or no knowledge of economic theory.To meet the demand for accessible econometric literature in other disciplines, authors and publishers have produced textbooks that are much less mathematically demanding than the staple sources. Examples include Wooldridge's Introductory Econometrics, Gujarati's Essentials of Econometrics, Stockman and Watson's Introductory Econometrics, and Mirer's Economic Statistics and Econometrics. Also, Peter Kennedy's Guide to Econometrics is an accessible catalog of tests and correctives for violation of assumptions, provided the non-specialists stay out of the technical appendices.However, Hayashi's Econometrics clearly does not belong in the category of textbooks that appeal to a broad-based audience of social scientists. Hayashi, quite rightly, has a different audience in mind, and he assumes that the reader knows and has facility in applying the mathematics that is legitimately expected of economists. He also liberally incorporates economic theory into his presentation. While the econometric texts mentioned above lean heavily on OLS estimators, Hayashi treats OLS as just a special case of the generalized method of moments, a concept that is entirely alien to most students and practitioners who are not well schooled in the mathematical methods of economics.One consequence is that social scientists who are not cautious in selection of self-instructional materials order Hayashi's text and are then dumbfounded when they encounter mathematics and economic theory that they are not prepared to handle. Sure, they could take the time and effort needed to get up to speed, but most folks are in a hurry and have more pressing concerns for released time and sabbaticals.I was introduced to econometrics in an independent study thirty-five years ago. I was assigned sections from the first edition of Johnston's Econometric Methods and Kmenta's Elements of Econometrics, as well as few journal articles, and was then on my own. As a result, I can sympathize with other non-economists' frustration. Johnston and Kmenta may seem pretty accessible now, but at the time they were regarded as difficult. I initially preferred Kmenta because his first edition (as well as his second) did not require practiced facility with matrix algebra. I'm still embarrassed to recall, however, how mystified I was when Kmenta began introducing alternatives to OLS estimators. I didn't know there were any! I eventually learned a lot, but making sense of Johnston forced me teach myself the rudiments of matrix algebra.I know that textbook publishing is a racket, just look at the prices. But I think that publishers have an obligation to very conspicuously apprise prospective readers that a text like Hayashi's understandably makes demands on the reader that non-economists typically will not meet. Otherwise, social scientists who might use applied econometrics in their less mathematically-intensive disciplines will waste money and be deprived of statistical tools they might put to good use.

One of the best books I've ever read. Hayashi explains everything very clearly and never leaves any details out. The end of chapter exercises, especially the projects where the readers works with a real paper and data, are amazing.

The modern standard econometric theory is fully covered in this excellent book. I felt very comfortable with the moment approach to econometrics conducted from first to last page. Also the exercises and examples are quite illuminating. You will not regret!

My favorite PhD metrics textbook. It is great for learning as opposed to being a dense reference like Greene. The beautiful typesetting makes it an easy read. And it is so cheap!

Kind-of a dense read, but Hayashi's book was recommended by one of my econ professors.

i was a bit skeptical to buy a cookbook written by somebody who is primarily a photographer. the writing is a bit 'over the top' sappy [jewish boy discovers his affinity with a country he had avoided for decades] but yes, the photos are just to die for, wonderful mix of places from the entire country, with restaurants featured both arab, israeli and israeli-arab. bottom line -- the recipes are fabulous. i have at least half of them marked to try [knafeh looks straight out of Damascus Gate; tahini cookies; lots and lots of wonderful vegan and vegetarian dishes; but a full assortment of lamp, seafood, etc]. instructions are clear, and recipes run the gamut from super easy to moderately, but not too, complex. yes, the book is a bit reminiscent of ottolenghi's jerusalem, but cuts a much wider swath; i view them as complementary. and being a serious baker, i appreciate nancy silverton's occasional comments & recipes as well. kudos, well done!!

FIVE STARS, EXCELLENT BOOK. Could serve as a great coffee table book as well. Most importantly is the information and recipes for this buyer as travel to Israel, and the spices and such can be overwhelming IF you do not know what you are doing. When traveling to Israel, I take a large rolling suitcase with bubblewrap and tape to bring food products back to the states, and Israel Eats just made life easier for this traveler and cook. Pictures, recipes, and stories are excellent, as if you were to go to Israel, you would connect 100% with this book. Israel Eats deserves nothing less than five stars, and would be an excellent cookbook for gifts. Highly recommend, beautiful pictures, very pleased with this purchase, and would post ten stars if allowed. Sincerely, Deborah

Having read and enjoyed most all of the Dale Carnegie books I was a little disappointed with this book expecting more substance.I believe that for certain individuals with absolutely no experience at all in public speaking it contains some helpful material for improved speaking in public. The material however is very basic and I personally had a hard time getting through the book with its basic content on the subject.The book is not geared for the seasoned professional who wants to learn new techniques to be able to deliver more impactful presentations or sales presentations. The book is more focused on a normal person who is planning to give a commencement speech or talk to a large group of individuals.

For years, I knew about Dale Carnegie and his famous How to Win Friends book, but I had not read anything he wrote. After reading +the more famous book of his, I wanted more. The Quick & Easy Way to Effective Speaking reinforced my belief that to be an effective speaker today, one does not need to be Demosthenes, or Daniel Webster, or even Everett Dirksen, the last of the great orators. One need only be sincere and confident to be effective. If you are one of those folks who would rather stick a pin in your eye than speak publicly, read this book!

I first read this book as part of the Dale Carnegie course several decades ago. Recently, my niece (who is an executive at a regional bank) was called upon to be the keynote speaker for a group of 1500 businesswomen. And she was tense about it.I gifted her with this book, and she devoured it. "I've heard so many dull speakers -- and now i know WHY they were so boring!" she told me.The language of "The Quick and Easy Way" is certainly dated, but the principles embodied in it are still sound. If you dread the idea of public speaking -- and most people do -- this book will help you organize your thoughts, offer tips on preparation, and show you how to avoid common pitfalls.Will it turn you into a silver-tongued orator? Best advice: be yourself, write down everything you already know before you start your research, be intentional with gestures while practicing but be natural when delivering speech. Dale Carnegie has listened to over 100,000 speeches. He worth considering.

I love this short book, full of Dale Carnegie's wisdom and tested speech techniques. Carnegie fills the book with personal stories associated with his recommendations that will help anyone stand up and speak in public while telling great stories in front of hundreds of people. You'll also be the life of the party as interesting people, amazed at your speaking talents, congregate around you.

A very comprehensive guide on how to speak effectively. To do a good talk, it requires good preparation, self interest of the topic, and never memorise the talk, focusing on ideas instead of words to speak spontaneously. And most importantly, always look for improving breadth of vocabulary, to push through plateaus so that we can think quickly and verbalize adroitly.

This book has given me an insight into the different methods of presenting ideas on both how to identify the purpose of the presentation and tips on how to do them effectively. I reflected on some of the presentations I enjoyed given by others and noticed a lot if the recommendations given in this book being applied. This book contains vital strategies for preparing and delivering your ideas to others and get the outcome you anticipated.

Dale Carnegie is one of the greatest authors on writing about not only how to be successful at the things you want to achieve. He gives great insight on how to communicate with people on your ideas and other aspects of life to get your point across in different areas. This book has been a Godsend. I literally have been asking God for help, and I believe he meant for me to come across this book. For years, I have been a people pleaser (to everyone but myself). I beat myself up constantly for my mistakes, and always worry about what others think. I have created more than enough habits to numb out, and then find myself feeling "stuck". This book is the real life version of how to create a better life; not the sugar-coated, everything-will-be-perfect, think happy thoughts, magic pill version of having a better life. Other books have a lot of good information, but never really quite spells it out like you are talking to a friend. Andrea is relatable, honest, and realistic. Thank you for writing this book.

Get a copy of this book! I I just finished this book as part of a book study group with some masterÂ coaches. It is aÂ great read no matter where you are on your journey as it points out 14 ways you may be short changing yourself and your happiness. I'm a big fan of Andrea Owen and Your Kick Ass Life, and I've been following her (and working personally with her) for years. What makes me keep going back for more is a book like this. Andrea is approachable, honest, vulnerable, and not afraid to share her stories for us to learn from and let us know she's not perfect. And reminds us that we need not be perfect either. I can relate to almost all of these 14 habits, and it's been a work in progress to catch myself in those spirals and pull myself out. This book is a good reminder of the tools and how to apply them. And let me know I'm not alone or crazy for feeling those things. All these things are normal. But if they're holding us back, there are things we can do to remedy that, and Andrea shows us how. I also recommend her podcast, and starting with episode 200 she's been doing a month of daily short episodes (less than 10 minutes) which include the lessons and stories surrounding the writing of this book. I know we can all learn a lot from Andrea, and I highly recommend this book and her work in general. The book is an easy read and you feel like a friend is telling you these things, not some high-and-mighty perfect lecturer who tells you what you're doing wrong.

The book is set up so you understand the habit and gives you suggestions and examples on what to do. All stuff you can implement immediately. There is some homework and list making, but all in all pretty happy with the book.

This book is geared towards women. Which is fine. Just didn't feel included.

Excellent book with practical advice for becoming a better person. Bought a second copy for a family member and recommended it on Facebook. One of my friends just bought a copy and is now recommending it to others. Even though Owen recommends that we stop giving unsolicited advice, I will ignore that and say, "Buy this book!"

I am a newer follower of Andrea Owenâ€™s podcast: Your Kick Ass Life and after listening to several episodes about her discussing her book, I decided to pre-order! Well, my book arrived on the date of the book release, January 2nd, and I finished it that night! If youâ€™ve been feeling a little scattered and wondering what might be holding you back, you should really pick up a copy of this book. If you want a better insight of Andrea before purchasing, check out her free podcast I mentioned earlier. Thank you Andrea for your hard work, and I look forward to the book club starting up soon!!

Iâ€™m glad I bought this book. She does a good job of calling out thought patterns and bad habits that typically hold people back from feeling good about themselves.

What a surprising book. I didnâ€™t know what to except. Joseph Rodota managed to tell the story of fascinating life within the prestigious condo community made famous by the nationâ€™s greatest political scandal. Who would have thought of such a book? Kudos to Rodota.The book begins with an extensive history of building the Watergate complex. That by itself is quite an enjoyable story, often including surprising and amusing material.The highlight of the book is stories of the famous political and powerful, sometimes quirky, residents. Many of these stories are just a lot of fun. Accomplished pianist Condoleezza Riceâ€™s annual Christmas party was a great success one year, but Karl Rove was very disappointed with the hors dâ€™oeuvres limited to Triscuits! I could go on but the party has just started....There is some more serious coverage too. I found the stories of fifty-year resident Anna Chennault especially compelling. Weâ€™ve just recently learned, by the research of another author, that the history of the Chennault Affair might not be over. I think Rodotaâ€™s coverage of Chennault will add to our understanding of her.I imagine readers will have enjoyable conversations after reading The Watergate. I have. I think itâ€™s fair to say many will see a topic of special interest in the book and end up enjoying the entire book. It is that artfully constructed. Finally, the extent of Rodotaâ€™s research is extraordinary â€” everything from decades-old newspapers to precise conversations among residents. I think thereâ€™s no question that he found more evidence for his purposes than the burglars found for theirs! I highly recommend this book.

Imagine - a book about the history of a building, that you can't put down! I know... unlikely - but here it is! Rodota is a gifted and lively writer, and conveys the intertwined political, social and economic themes with wit. I won't offer any spoilers, but I will say if the Washington scene is at all interesting to you, the coincidence and odd parallels uncovered here will fascinate you.

I enjoyed reading this book. Yes itâ€™s a history of a building but it reviewed recent US history as it dealt with the Watergate. Super interesting details re fights and parties and spies and affairs. It made me want to go to DC jist so I could stay at the hotel. I usually prefer novels, but this story kept me engaged. Highly recommend.

Engaging, entertaining and thorough! The interviews with residents from across the decades really brought the complex to life and engaged readers from many angles and perspectives. The author's sense of humor comes through, and I chuckled out loud several times while reading the book. There were also several moments of shock - The Watergate complex has been witness to an unbelievable amount of history.This book balances being thorough and engaging, and really presents a biography of a building. I learned so much about history as it was lived within the walls of the Watergate, and it made me ponder which buildings are witnessing history today.

Joe Rodota's first book The Watergate was an enjoyable non fiction book that informs the reader about a broad variety of historical facts that you would not otherwise learn. The book spans the time from when the Watergate complex was originally permitted, designed and built up to the present. It goes into detail about several interesting residents. While there was a section on the break in of the DNC headquarters the author gave equal time to a broad variety of other Watergate related topics. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

In addition to being extremely well written and meticulously researched, Rodota's Watergate is a window into the brightly colored lives of the people in and around the building who gave it character. I recommend it highly.

This book is well written and very informative.........Should be a must read for the younger group.

Christopher P. Baker was born and raised in Yorkshire, England. If ever you needed a guide CUBA is where you need it. Internet connections are hard to find, very slow and you often need to wait in line for a terminal. A few private houses (casas particulares)have connections and may, may, let you use their computer but it is with a dial-up connection. Thus, for those who are fans of great sites like Tripadvisor or Yahoo travel you are SOL. Thus, get a guide or even two if you are going to Cuba.That said I took two Cuba guides with me for my three weeks traveling the island: Rough Guides (see review) and Moon Handbook: Cuba. Both are great guides and I do recommend both if you can afford it, but if I had to choose just one guide, I would take Moon.Moon's maps are great and easy to navigate. The handbook's restaurant and accommodation recommendations are very reliable and accurate (I found them to be better than Rough Guides). Unlike the codes used by Rough Guide all accommodations are priced out. The guide has a great history, government & economy sections... and a pensive section on Cuban Society. Christopher Baker's writing is clear and often candid, ie. "Varadero, the artificial Cuba frequented by budget-minded Canadian and European charter groups... lacks vitality. At night the onshore breeze brings rotten-egg fumes from the petrochemical works... more importantly, it bears no relation to Cuban reality."It comes up short regarding the scuba diving section (Rough Guide is excellent) and does not have as many recommendations for restaurants or accommodations as Rough Guide. That said this is a great guide and you will not go wrong using taking it with you. Highly recommended. Footnote, I also recommend that you take with you 'Cuba: What Everybody Needs to Know' by Julia Sweig... this is an excellent overview of Cuba in all regards.

I've been to Cuba seven times. I met my wife on the second trip. 99% of tourists never leave the resorts, except for an excursion to Habana Viejo (Havana's old city). Most of the guidebooks are for those people, presenting only the places that tourists go. Of those guidebooks the Lonely Planet guidebook (Sainsbury, 4th ed.) is the best.Only one guidebook covers every pueblito on the island. My 4th edition of the Christopher Baker's Moon Handbook is falling apart from too much use. I'm ordering the 5th edition for my trip in a few weeks. The Moon guide is not only complete, it is a pleasure to read. Baker is a fine writer. The photos and maps are excellent too. The history of Cuba in the back is better than some of the history books I've read. If you want to go to Cuba's less popular national parks (i.e., not Vinales or Topos de Collantes) you'll have to get Baker's guidebook, as this is the only book that covers the undeveloped national parks.I liked Baker's guidebook so much that I read "Mi Moto Fidel," his book about writing the first edition of the Moon guidebook. My only complaint about the Moon guidebook is that it makes me want to take six months and see all the amazing places he describes. Also, my wife and Cuban in-laws are continually shocked at the out of the way places I want to see. They just want to go to a resort and lie by the pool (they weren't allowed to enter resorts until a couple years ago, so this is a dream to them). I want to go see something the Baker found -- an American fighter-bomber that was shot down in the Bay of Pigs invasion, miles down a rugged trail; or hire an ornithologist to go into a swamp to see a bee hummingbird (the world's smallest bird); or hire a guide to explore the Gran Caverna de San Tomas, Cuba's biggest cave.**update** The 5th edition (2010) is much smaller. My favorite resort, Hanabanilla near Manicaragua, was left out because few tourists go there (which is one reason I like it). I wish that Christopher Baker had updated the 4th edition and then the publisher had released it on the Kindle. The 4th edition was heavy to carry around. What would be perfect would be to carry the Lonely Planet guide (in print) and have the 4th edition Moon guide on your Kindle.

The author is a white man from the UK who is in his 60s and his perspective/language seems to be a bit stuck in 1985. He refers often to the "New World" (people still say this?) makes quippy/snobby remarks about Cuban food (calls some dishes "common peasant food" - wtf?), and generally tends to point readers to places built for/most comfortable to older white dude tourists -- snobby ones with lots of money.I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend going to Cuba. I'd download the Lonely Planet app instead - they had great suggestions for Havana.

I can't usually say that I agree almost all the time with travel writers, but in this case it was true! The author obviously really knows Cuba and makes witty (and true) comments that made reading the book enjoyable. I had this book and the LP with me on my recent trip, and found this book the most helpful. A few of his hotel recommendations were a bit out of date, but since the book was written in 2010 that is to be expected. Where he really shines is the recommendations for outdoor activities, which was a highlight for me.Overall-a great travel book!

The only down side is that you have to figure out the parts of Havana first but once you get your bearings, this book is excellent. Talks about history so you can compare it to the official version that every tour guide forces you to listen to. We had every kind of guidebook on this trip. This and the Rough guide seemed to be the best.
